How is overcoming altitude more difficult in September as opposed to October or any other month?

Not sure. Perhaps athletes are in better cardiovascular shape as the season wears on.

Especially now that they practice so much less.

Week 1 was not pretty around the league. A lot of bad football.

Trevor Siemien doesn't scare me. It'll probably be another low-scoring affair. We'll need to protect the football.

I've never noticed the altitude issue when snow skiing...

The skis are doing all the work. Bending knees shouldn't wear anyone out. Ditch the lift and walk up the slope and give us a full report afterwards

It's an adjustment that has to occur over time so the blood chemistry can adapt. There are instances where athletes in all sports, including soccer, have ended up in the hospital because of hypoxemia. Athletes that have the sickle cell trait are at greater risk.
Thank you Dr erod for that medical explanation. My point is physical fitness effects how your body reacts to a deletion of oxygen due to altitude. No one is immune to it but it is less of an issue if you are physically fit. I learned this in my years in the Air Force working with a flight surgeon.

Does it affect surgeons and anesthesiologists and what they have to do during surgery?

He's starting to figure it out. San Diego has a good defense and pass rush, and he carved them up pretty well early on.

People with Sickle Cell Trait are of no greater risk than anyone else. It merely means they can pass the gene on to their offspring. They suffer from no physical symptoms. Now people who have sickle cell disease are affected in multiple ways.

Funny how when the media starts using phrases like " sickle cell trait" it gets repeated ad nauseum without regard to its true meaning

It effect pilots and flight crews that are subjected to oxygen depredation when their oxygen systems malfunction or fail.

The altitude doesn't seem to help the Denver Nuggets that much and there's a lot more running in basketball than football.

Well Bob, tell us what the stats are when they aren't that good of a team.

Cleveland Indians are on a 20 game win streak, but does that make them unbeatable. Someone will cause a loss.

So when Denver comes down off the mountain, does the heavier air effect their play?
it has more to do with being a good team, not the air. They try to use that as a mind game. Last I seen they still have 8 homes games like all other teams, unless you are the 2005 Giants, and Mara gets you a 9th home game.

When it comes to cardiovascular fitness, Basketball players are the best athletes in the world.

That's not exactly true tho. There were several NFL players in recent history who had sickle cell and wouldn't travel with their teams to play at Denver because they would get sick. Off the top of my head I can think of Ryan Clark skipped that game several times because of it

True, because as you stated they have sickle cell ,not sickle cell TRAIT.

Just clarifying the difference..
