I saw this posted over at extremeskins blasting Lloyd for "flopping" and it shows conclusively that he was still an active runner when Akin downed him. What a bogus call!

Looking at your replay it does appear he got down to protect himself. At the game it appeared Ware caused hiim to go down. That's a tough call.

However, I believe the fact that Akin lowered his shoulder into the runner got the flag thrown. If he had landed on him with his chest there would have been no problem.

*** Edit ***

Just watched the replay a few more times. Akin did hit him with his chest and not the top of the shoulder pad like I thought he did.

Bad call ... but when Ware lays his hand on a runner you kinda expect the runner to go down. :)

If Ayodele were psychic and knew Lloyd was gonna flop down he probably would of just landed on him with his chest. Keep in mind, he's running full speed, he probably had less then a second to react after Lloyd "flopped".

The question is when did the whistle blow. If it blew as soon as he touched the turf, down by contact, then Akin hits him then it was correct. He had time to pull up.....IMO

You've got to remember that the officials don't have the benefit of watching it again. Frankly my first reaction to the play was to yell at our guy for a stupid play - I thought it was clearly a late hit. Then when I saw the replay on TV I wasn't so sure. At full speed in the middle of the moment I can easily see why the officals called it - even looking at the replay you provided it takes a close look to be absolutely certain.

I thought the Demarecus Ware call was 10 times worse. For how fast Ware was going and how close he was, it was physically impossible to hold up any more than he did.

Anyone have a video of that one?

I live in Leesburg, VA and work in Herndon.

If you can make it to the Skins/Cowboys game, make sure you stop by my 3rd Annual Beat the Skins Tailgate!

Ware wasn't called for a late hit, it was the helmet to helmet contact.

IF you LOOK AT WARE's "HELMET TO HELMET HIT" you will see he literally pulls back to stop his momentum

AND

Brunell actually puts his head down as to FORCE a HELMET TO HELMET HIT!

Watch the video!

Ware did EVERYTHING he could do to reverse it

I just said that's what he got called for - not that it was right.

Although I can easily see why they called it.

I agree completely that Ware was trying to hold up - that much is obvious.

The problem Ware had was that he dipped his head so the crown of his helmet was aimed at the QB before contact, and even though he slowed down and pulled his head back up before actually making contact that image stuck in the official's mind. In the blink of an eye it took for all that to occur it is not an easy call to make.

The bottom line is that close and questionable calls happen all the time, and neither of these were easy calls. The griping should be saved for those rare calls in which there can be no question and a blink of an eye decision isn't a factor.

Like the holding penalty that was waived off because Ellis pushed his way through the hold (or however the official worded it) - now what was that about?

If this scenario were Terry Glenn and Marcus Washington...
NONE of you would think it was a bad call.

I agree with the Poster who suggested we make a 5 yard incidental, and a 15 yard personal foul.

It was a bad call. Period.

And if it were TG and MW, it STILL would of been a bad call.

It doesn't matter, you can't "spear" a guy who's on the ground, no matter what the situation...lead with your head or shoulder like that and you will be flagged as it is unnecessary.

Do you even know what a spear is? That is NOT a spear.

A spear is when you lead with the top of your helmet. His helmet didn't even touch Lloyd.

Get a clue.

I think calling this a "spear" is questionable, but I do find it amusing that so many think that making a spur of the moment call with guys moving full speed is as easy as it is sitting at home watching replays on TV or the internet.

Nobody said it was easy, but that IS the ref's job. They're expected to do it well.

Playing QB in the NFL with 300+ lb defensive lineman pounding you into the ground isn't easy either, but no one had a problem criticizing Bledsoe after the Jags game.

Double standard much?

So, what would you say if he wouldn't have hit him and Lloyd would have jumped up and ran for another 50 yards?
