The bad habit of running it back with the same people and same strategy

One of the many bad things about having your owner also serve as your GM is the really, really bad habit of keeping the same people around that have never done much in the playoffs when they had the chance.

Our owner falls in love with all the decisions and draft picks his GM makes, even when those people have accomplished very little when It mattered most. Then follows that up with the same people and same roster strategy that got you nowhere in the playoffs…again.

In short, why keep the same cast of key players and coaches when they collectively have done very little to make the Cowboys even close to a championship? Why is it so important to keep the same players and coaches who have accomplished almost nothing in the playoffs?

”Running it back” with the same key people and expecting different results is the habit of unaccountable leaders. They take few risks and would rather stick with what they feel safe with than be aggressive to get better. We’ve seen this with Tony Romo, Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott, Jason Garrett, and now Mike McCarthy.

Let me make a couple of clarifications. Tony Romo and Dak Prescott have been good QBs. Not great but good enough IF and I mean a HUGE IF…you surround them with the right roster support. Our FO is apparently incapable of understanding this. Neither of those QBs have ever been capable of strapping a team on its back and winning playoff games by themselves. NEWS FLASH: Unless you are Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow, that’s mostly true about every NFL QB. And Mahomes wouldn’t have won the SB last year without that great KC defense.

So when this past off-season came along after the worst playoff loss in Cowboys history, I hoped our front office would wake up and say, “I’m tired of being good enough to make the playoffs and then accomplish nothing. We need a new approach.“

I had hoped they would fire McCarthy, let Dak’s contract expire, see if they could draft or trade for a different QB when it seemed clear the window for Dak to lead this team was closing. By the way, I’m not “anti-Dak” - I think the people saying he’s garbage are blinded by how much money he makes or are just so frustrated by the team’s failure, he becomes the focus. He’s good but just not a great QB and needs a strong running game to be most effective.

Unless I’m not seeing clearly, this front office is headed toward another “run it back“ with mostly the same key people that have given us 1 wild card playoff win in 5 years. Why should we expect any different results next year?

They sure have a hot hand right now. Amazing that they are playing so well with backups and Lamb playing hurt.

We cannot run it back with this regime and expect change. I don't care how hard the team is playing for McCarthy when they have nothing to lose. Where was this passion and grit earlier in the season?

Why did it take so long for Dowdle to become the bell cow? Why start a rookie turnstile at LT?

The ultimate “run it back” is to keep the same GM and son in place year after year with a 4-13 playoff record since their last divisional playoff win in Jan, 1996.

Yeah I think you're right, its looking like another run it back scenario. Granted I will say it makes more sense to do that this year than it did last largely due to the momentum the team has along with several younger players appearing to be trending in the right direction as well. Continuity with the coaching staff can often be the best thing for player development which is a major reason I'm not firmly on the fire McCarthy train. What simply cannot happen is Jerry believing for another season that he can draft 3+ week 1 starters and not miss a beat. He also can't believe that the young players on this team will only get better. Player progression is very rarely a linear process and guys are going to go through ups and down. The most important piece of this offseason will be Jerrys ability to bring in a couple of legitimate top 75 type of free agents along with some veteran depth to compete instead of handing 5th/6th round rookies roster spots.

I’m looking at the big picture. Glad you’re enjoying the here and now.
How can you not enjoy it? It's awesome. They literally beat the crap out of the Bucs. How do you think their receivers and Mayfield feel in the training room today?

The big picture is that they are better than you thought they were just a month ago.
Rambo, I appreciate your enthusiasm for the team and I support your right to express whatever opinions you have about the Cowboys. I want them to win too. And I always enjoy a Cowboys win. In the here and now, this team has certainly played better.

But what I’m addressing here is the big picture over multiple years. This organization appears completely comfortable with some regular season success followed by a wild card win every five years. There seems to be no hunger to achieve more than that.

If that makes you happy, enjoy.

This isn’t a serious franchise. It’s run by a nepotistic, narcissistic oil man with no history of building championship rosters. Dallas has a built in handicap that puts them in the group of teams least likely to ever win another title. Gonna have to get really lucky to even get to another SB.

Looking forward to your thoughts after the Eagles game. It looks like it's going to be a good one. Merry Christmas!

JJ likes to portray himself as a risk taking wildcatter, but he's now afraid to take risks with the roster. It's a shame because teams can be rebuilt rather quickly. Decades of mediocrity. No real chance next year either- although Dallas will win a few more games and JJ will blow smoke in your ear.

I think they will run it all back. Same coaches, although not sure Zimm doesn’t want to retire again. I think they will pay Rico as well. They will blame the injuries and say we played well late with backups yadda yadda. Nothing will change in FA either. We hope every year and they are in a rhythm of doing the same thing over and over each offseason.

Kinda like people starting the same threads over and over again. I'm tired of it..you are definitely right on this one, when you say, we need a new approach.

Jerry has made a number of coaching and personnel changes over the years and nothing ever changes when we reach the playoffs. We continue to see the same issues. Nothing will change until he changes or is no longer in charge.

They say ignorance is bliss and a few really prove that here.

Just like part of society , some never look past the end of the day and the big picture isn't for them.

Thankfully the greater part of us measures sucess by championships rather than three 12 win seasons that end in failure.

It take all kinds.....and that's OK by me because it's entertaining to see the thought process in real time.
