The bad habit of running it back with the same people and same strategy

One of the many bad things about having your owner also serve as your GM is the really, really bad habit of keeping the same people around that have never done much in the playoffs when they had the chance.

Our owner falls in love with all the decisions and draft picks his GM makes, even when those people have accomplished very little when It mattered most. Then follows that up with the same people and same roster strategy that got you nowhere in the playoffs…again.

In short, why keep the same cast of key players and coaches when they collectively have done very little to make the Cowboys even close to a championship? Why is it so important to keep the same players and coaches who have accomplished almost nothing in the playoffs?

”Running it back” with the same key people and expecting different results is the habit of unaccountable leaders. They take few risks and would rather stick with what they feel safe with than be aggressive to get better. We’ve seen this with Tony Romo, Dak Prescott, Zeke Elliott, Jason Garrett, and now Mike McCarthy.

Let me make a couple of clarifications. Tony Romo and Dak Prescott have been good QBs. Not great but good enough IF and I mean a HUGE IF…you surround them with the right roster support. Our FO is apparently incapable of understanding this. Neither of those QBs have ever been capable of strapping a team on its back and winning playoff games by themselves. NEWS FLASH: Unless you are Patrick Mahomes or Joe Burrow, that’s mostly true about every NFL QB. And Mahomes wouldn’t have won the SB last year without that great KC defense.

So when this past off-season came along after the worst playoff loss in Cowboys history, I hoped our front office would wake up and say, “I’m tired of being good enough to make the playoffs and then accomplish nothing. We need a new approach.“

I had hoped they would fire McCarthy, let Dak’s contract expire, see if they could draft or trade for a different QB when it seemed clear the window for Dak to lead this team was closing. By the way, I’m not “anti-Dak” - I think the people saying he’s garbage are blinded by how much money he makes or are just so frustrated by the team’s failure, he becomes the focus. He’s good but just not a great QB and needs a strong running game to be most effective.

Unless I’m not seeing clearly, this front office is headed toward another “run it back“ with mostly the same key people that have given us 1 wild card playoff win in 5 years. Why should we expect any different results next year?
Not a bad habit.
What you want a new coach every year?

And another part of that is Jerry is quite simply confused. He's not a football guy, so when his plan doesn't work, he has no idea what to do, how to correct it. And yet insists on being the GM. He's just such a terrible GM.

You will get different results, McCarthy will be fired mid season.

The last two head coaches of the Dallas Cowboys:
  • Jason Garrett - 2011-2019. Made the playoffs 3 times in 9 seasons, won 2 wild card games.
  • Mike McCarthy - 2020-2024 (so far) Made the playoffs 3 times in 5 seasons, won 1 wild card game.
I‘m not suggesting changing coaches every year. But in Garrett’s case we only made the playoffs 3 times in 9 years! And when Big Mac was hired he was supposed to get us to the next level, which seemed obvious it was to get us to at least a conference championship. Mac has one wild card win in 5 years.

Are we supposed to be good with all this?

I say definitely not we are not good with it but the root of the problem may not be entirely the coach.
Find it very hard to believe that McCarthy doesn't know who the best players are on his team and who should play.

Jerry on the other hand wants to see who he wants to see play when all of us know that Zeke is done and Martin has become a liability.
Along with the fact that there seems to be some dynamic between Dak and CD that causes him to pout and hang his head.

It just seems more than coincidence to me that now that our expensive players are out of the mix that we are suddenly playing so much better and it is against teams that are in the playoffs and need to win to gain a better position not teams that have cashed in their season.

So my question is is our owner and general manager handcuffing our coach by setting the roster to his own liking rather than who should really be playing

Is Booger REALLY going to ignore the Green Bay game along with the first 6 HORRIFIC home games…most of them WITH Dim??? At this point I almost pray he is stupid enough to bring Corky back, and watch this whole S house really go up in flames over the next 4 years…the pain it’s going to cause both him and Chuckles will be worth the pain he’s cost Cowboy fans for THIRTY years…if he thinks there is apathy now, just wait. And from the “you heard it here first” department….look for them to move from Oxnard and closer to home as the training camp numbers continue to get even more embarrassing.

MM is prolly our best option. Who else would Jerry get who's even decent?

I hate that lame question.....such a give-up. It's not up to us to answer....that is for the GM to figure out!!!
It's the equivalent of punting on 3rd and long. Just giving up because things may be difficult or slightly uncomfortable. Big part of the reason this entire franchise folds at the slightest sign of adversity. The Jones Apologists will swallow anything from their leader.

Just like their proven failure of a philosophy on free agency.

Trying beats not trying every single time.

What you want a new coach every year?
Wanting a new coach after 5 years of not good enough is somehow wanting a new head coach every year?

29 years of not competing for a Super Bowl and so many of Jones apologists are content.

It is an absolute mystery why so many alleged Cowboys fans are perfectly fine with mediocrity.

It's the same idiotic argument on why we had to sign a "choker" QB to the biggest contract because we might not be able to find someone better.

I know on the heels football board before Bill, most were OK with keeping Mack Brown because he win 8 games tops and they thought that was the ceiling for the football team. I am like really? WTH is wrong with you guys being OK with 8 wins only. Told them sounds like losers to me.

No, not at all.

The HC position is almost impossible to fill at a high level due to most HC's not wanting to touch this org. Because Jerry won't let them do what they do. So, MM is about as good as we're going to get.
