The Coaching Carousel

Fisher has been one of the best coaches in the league for years now, the guy does more with less, he hasn't had a qb in years. Garrett has done a nice job, but stop treating the guy like he is bill walsh.

He could end up a Bill Walsh type coach, you dont know.

But I do know Fisher isnt a Bill Walsh type coach. He's ok, and thats probably all he will ever be.

If he was one of the best coaches in the league he'd be in the playoffs more than 33% of the time. To me he's average or slightly above average. If he was the only option thn I wouldnt be disappointed, but there are others I'd prefer over him. Starting with the guy we already have in place.

Wait a second, Garrett's better than Fisher now? I love Garrett and i would have no problem with him being next year but he's not in the same league as Fisher.

I hate to break it to you, but garrett is fisher from about 18 years ago.

Fisher is a former player who tagged onto buddy ryan and went to philly where he learned to coach, then he went to sf and coached defensive backs, then he left to run jack pardee's defense in houston and was a rising star. then he took over as an interm.

So lets recap, former player, tags on with coaches he knows well to learn jumps to a different organization he has ties to in SF in 92 and 93 then gets coordinator job for pardee, pardee gets fired fisher hired.

All the teams he has been involved with as a coach have never been able to get over the hump.

and to say he didnt have a qb is insane. he had mcnair in his prime and an outstanding running game and defense to go with him. He just couldnt get over the hump.

So really, I like fisher he is a good coach, but this myth being built around him is annoying.

Garrett actually played the game at a higher level and had more success and he got himself around excellent coaches like turner, cameron, linehan etc on offense to learn.

I will take garrett over fisher right now, thanks.

Biggest thing to me when comparing all these guys who I think are around the same are the two key issues, Dealing with jerrys mouth and dealing with the ridiculous expectations and how the media plays on that here.

Garrett already has shown he can handle that, we simply dont know what a fisher would be like in that scenario.

UMM you mean like fisher?

Did I miss the loaded roster that fisher has had a chance to coach lately, the guy had the best record in the league a few years ago, with kerry collins as his qb.

Nearly a 1/3rd of the league is going to be looking for new coaches ( maybe a 1/3rd IF Norv gets canned in San Diego, and Coughlin in New York ). You add that up to the possibility of a lockout, and if I was advising somebody like Jerry Jones, I would tell him to stick with Jason and consider it a victory.

Why ? Simple logic.

How many coaches that are out there right now have the resume that's better than JG ? Gruden, Cowher, maybe Norv, maybe Coughlin, and maybe Holmgren ( I say maybe because in those cases it's not official that they're going to be available ). Let's assume, for argument's sake, that those 5 are available with 12 openings. That means bidding wars and the last thing the Cowboys should do is get into a bidding war for a headcoach.

There are no " hot shot assistants " that everybody is drooling after. One of the reasons is that some of the top teams this year have assistant coaches who are actually retreads or former headcoaches that are looked at and thought of as: " been there, done that " ( KC Chiefs staff, Chicago Bears staff, Baltimore Ravens staff ). On a side note: Because of that success, I think you're going to see more teams stocking up on former headcoaches as assistants in the future. Another reason is that in other top teams, the headcoach gets an overwhelming amount of credit, overshadowing the assistants ( Eagles, Steelers, Saints, Patriots, Packers ).

However, even if there were a bunch of " hot assistants " and/or " hot college coaches ", I'd still advice Jerrah to stick with JG because they would be even less proven than JG at this point, so it doesn't make sense to make a change in that direction.

I guess you missed the late 90s and early 2000s when he didnt have to contend with payton manning twice by the way.

they had an incredible defense and an incredible running game to go along with mcnair.

They ended up never being able to beat the ravens or steeers except the one year 1999 with the music city miracle.

ironically, his teams have ended up having similar fates as the teams of the guy's he learned from.

and if you dont think he had good teams go hit ten yard torrents and watch some old games from that 98-02 period. he had the talent and couldnt get over the hump.

Jim Fassell went to the superbowl with kerry collins, just throwing that out there.

I wasn't talking the late 90's and early 2000's, we all know he had plenty of talent then, I was talking the past few years. The guy has his team in the hunt every year.

Fisher's a .500 HC and he lost that SB.

He's not a .500 coach and he's taken teams with marginal talent to the playoffs 6 times in the last 11 seasons.

You mean 6 times in 17 seasons. And in 5 of the last 7 seasons, they havent been in the playoofs.

Your right he isnt a 500 coach, he's a .544 coach

6 good years out of 17, along with a bunch of bad years and .500 seasons isnt enough to get me up on a pedestal for the guy.

He does? Since when?

Not really. he has made 6 playoffs and followed up 13-3 with an 0-6 start and now back to back losing seasons oh and he has not been able to keep his meddling owner under control and has been forced to start VY by the owner on several occasions

Many people say that Fisher has great respect from people in the know around the league. Are they all just that misinformed? I guess so.

Anyway... The setup here is amazing. Basically, we can't hire an experienced coach who has won a Superbowl, because no one has every won one in two different places. Then we can't hire an experienced coach who hasn't won a Superbowl, because that proves he can't ever do it.

So we're basically left with a new guy who has never had a chance. Funny how that works out.

By this logic, Dave Campo was a better choice for head coach in 2000 than Bill Cowher was in 2005, or Tom Coughlin was in 2006. I mean, he was new and hadn't had a chance yet. Plus he knew Jerry and how things worked around here.

i think that if it wasn't for that punk vince young, no one here would be talking about fisher as a possible HC for the cowboys.(me personally, i'll take either garrett or gruden)
