The Cowboys can afford to re-sign their own but should they?

well, dak and his agent will got a lot of upfront money and then are thinking either a big redo or getting out and getting a last large contract.

at 12-5 we have some big decisions, do we even think about getting rid of Dak now, because the dead cap will handicap the team to compete at all and probably end up with a top 5 pick. its a strategy, but a big decision for a team that was 12-5 and in the second round of playoffs.

reality, Jerry will probably redo contract, trying to find a way to get out of it in 2 years. then rebuild
So are you saying to dump Dak and tank to get a top pick. Take a QB and some time to rebuild, then the QB you take a chance you end up with a bust. Or are you just bringing up the question?
When you know what you have in Dak, which is a very above average QB, when you can surround him with better talent?

Better talent better play calling with a better offensive scheme is what was needed. I want to see what Dak can do.
Extend the contract, but do it so you can still get out in a few years with less cap impact, and a higher salary cap.

They will 5th year option Parsons and then use at least one tag after that.

I think he's going to be a tough one to sign long term unless they start winning something more than wild card games.

no, I am just saying those are our options. we could. we could dump dak, nothing prohibits us, but we have ato account 89M of deadcap for him alone, plus others, which essentially cuts our cap by 50% this year, or 25% this year and 25% next year. take into account dumping zeke, several others and rolling deadcap from last year. essentially would be you are going to have Jr. NFL team and essentially end up in top 5 at worst.

but reality, its a tough decision for a team who was 12-5 and in second round of playoffs. probably won't happen, thus expect a restructure of Dak's contract to reduce cap hit and try and be more competitive

Thanks for the clarification.

If you’re going to extend Diggs, NOW is the time to do it at a discount.

Yeah it’s gonna cost more in 23 and 24, but we are on a long term plan, right Jerry?

They talk out of both sides of their mouth in an attempt to cover their inability to get this right.

Instead they will wait until he is a UFA, tell the media he is their guy, then ask the agent for a discount. In the end, since he is a popular player and sells jerseys, he will become the highest paid CB in league history, but wont at all be the best.

Anyone seen that movie?

They don't have to do that. They can extend him after next year. Any big cap hit from him won't happen until 2027. So it's better to extend him as soon as possible at the current rate. The cap should be much higher by 2027.

Judging by how Micah’s personality has evolved since being here, by that time, if that happens, it’s another Cabo situation.

No way he plays six years without getting paid, and nor should he. They need to reach a compromise as soon as he is eligible, but I’m not at all sure Jerry and kid are capable of not getting beat to death by an agent….and their own mouths usually do it.

You are 100% right. But the only thing more it will cost in 2023 will be 1/4 or 1/5 his signing bonus. Basically still cheap. Then 2024 is the first year of that extension, and that's usually not a huge cap hit. It's 2025 when Diggs hits the cap hard. But by that time. hopefully the cap jumped quite a bit. Right now is the time to sign or trade.

Either they can totaly re-do Tyron's contract to a DLaw 2 year type deal .. or an outright cut release. two biggest factors are:

1) if club still he can play at high level - that places top five best starters on the OL
2) Re-doing a DLaw deal lessens the cap burden on Tyron's current deal.

I’m not at all for giving up on Tyron. I think most of last year off should help him.

If he can find a way to mange the miles that are on him he should be able to play another handful of seasons.

I’d guess it’s more about how badly he wants to chase that ring. He is a very wealthy man. Should be anyway.

I mean, if something doesn’t break soon, the list of HOF players that never saw an NFCCG is going to grow above what it already is.

A decade of dated Garrett ball will do that to an organization, but Jerry wanted to “have fun again.”

- i thinkTyron is more a luxury than necessity. But i expect him to get injured again in either camp or reg season.

- But how helpful was it that he could swing to RT, when both Steele and Peters were injured ? And Ball would have been instant death to this offense.

-What really killed the future was unreliabillity of the two young backup OTs Mat Wally and Josh ball.

- Ball clearly has not developed,.. and Wally was hurt all year.

- And frankly i'm not keen on a 41 year old 30 lb jason peters. he's good for a handful of plays and finishing the game, but i don't expect him to stay healthy.

On Tyron, I thought Trent Williams was cooked when Washington traded him. Turned out to be not at all.

I really don’t want to see Tyron pull a Ware and win a ring elsewhere, but more than that…I think he is a great NFL tackle, even if he is only 85% of his former self.

If they have to redo his deal, that’s fine.

When the kid sees the potential savings, he is going to be tempted, but I hope Jerry’s loyalty kicks in here.

Tyron isn’t ready to be done all that yet.

I mean, the Lamb, Diggs and Parsons AAVs seem alright with me.

Unfortunately, the QB market is stupid, and even someone like Daniel Jones could sniff 40mil AAV.
Giants are trying to lock up Jones now at 35 million/year.

If true, I'm really interested to see if he takes that. He'll be breaking protocol if he does. All QBs coming off their rookie deal want to be paid market value or go to another team. If I were him, I'd take it. Worry about yourself, not those that come after you. Why bother doing the prove it route with another team? That doesn't work for a lot of QBs.

If Jones is offered 30-35 million and doesn't take it, he runs the risk of never seeing another offer like that again. He's got a decision to make.

Now I'm not a numbers guy but this doesn't seem sustainable. This can not happen.

How do you handle this? Or do you think a competitive team can be put on the field with 4 players taking up over 40% of your cap space?

None of the new signings will have that big a cap hit for a few years. By then daks present deal will be finished and if they extend him the cap hit will go down considerably
Average of a contract and cap hits are two different things. By then Tyron will be gone and Dlaw too

For starters, I don’t touch Dak Prescott’s contract. Leave bad enough alone and reserve the option to get out of it in 2025. That gives me some wiggle room for huge deals like Micah’s.
Yup……if a giant turd in gonna pass through the colon it’s best to just let it go and be done with it asap.
