The Cowboys can afford to re-sign their own but should they?

Also I'm not a cap guy but I'm pretty sure you can stagger the contracts so they don't all hit the same year. The good teams make it so two of those guys have huge hits one year than two the next.

Now I'm not a numbers guy but this doesn't seem sustainable. This can not happen.

How do you handle this? Or do you think a competitive team can be put on the field with 4 players taking up over 40% of your cap space?

It's important to keep the band together. Winning a playoff game every few years doesn't come cheap.

Rookie contracts are scaled, in favor of the owners.

2nd contracts/UFA are where players make their money.

Don’t feel sorry for the owners.

Look at what they are paying CD, Parsons, and Diggs right now.

Pennies.
No one feels sorry for the owners. No one. I think people here feel bad for the salary cap situation. Whats most unfortunate is our stupid owner and son can't replenish the roster because its too much work for them. They would rather just pay the same guys more money and put all their roster problems to bed. Then they can go on a nice relaxing 4 week cruise on the yacht.

I’d gear up to pay Parsons. I would not pay any of the others top 5 money. Not any of the three of them.
CD is fine that contract will age ok in a few years when others top wrs get paid. We can't just let the only weapon we have walk. I think Diggs isn't worth it for sure.

Let's be honest, there's only one person on this list that is worth that kind of money and he's not really an edge rusher and over time if he's left out there his career is going to be shortened considerably.

I get it. And I can’t criticize your thinking. I just don’t want them to make anyone else too paid till they prioritize D tackle and O line. I want to see more prioritization for those two units. Also, I don’t want them to pay anyone unnecessarily early as well.

Yeah, its not realistic. The guys I would be looking to move would be Dak and Diggs. Just trade Diggs for picks and you don't touch Dak's contract as Stash said earlier. If he can't perform this year, cut him.

Gallup should be cut after this year if he can't get up to speed. DLaw is also probably gone after this year.

This isn't going to be popular but the guys who are value contracts in the prime of their careers tend to be offensive lineman. Since they don't depend on speed, they can be effective well into their 30's and frequently have long careers. If I was trying to figure out where to allocate cap money, a good chunk of it would go there.

The fatal flaw this front office has shown over and over is to think that the biggest talent pieces they have (which has combined for 2 WC wins in the last 7 seasons) cannot be broken up at any cost.

Micah Parsons is a special talent. But beyond him, there’s not a player on this team that should be untouchable or thought to be absolute cornerstones.

For starters, I don’t touch Dak Prescott’s contract. Leave bad enough alone and reserve the option to get out of it in 2025. That gives me some wiggle room for huge deals like Micah’s.

Secondly, it’s not a foregone conclusion for me that I’m absolutely paying to keep Diggs. His end of the season and offseason news are giving me doubts that he’s the safest of investments.

Thirdly, while I tend to think we will re-sign Lamb, it’s also not a lock for me, given trends and a steady influx of talent at that position.
I do not resign diggs. he choked way too big in that sf game

Move on from Dak and Cee Dee. Resign Micah and Diggs. Cut Zeke

  • Replace Coop’s contract with CeeDee. I think that was the plan all along. Probably the contract I feel best about. Improves every year and doesn’t seem to wear down with that smaller frame.
  • Replace Tank’s contract with Micah. Although I think there’s a shelf life somewhere in Micah’s future if they keep playing him as a 4-3 DE.
  • Replace Zeke’s contract with Diggs. Probably the contract I would most worry about.
  • Dak already gets paid too much, nothing new for our cap.

Don't start off by saying you're not a numbers guy, then give an opinion on numbers. Because what you end up typing will end up being wrong.

Dak is already being paid, so lets not pretend it's new. The other contracts are all staggard. They don't all hit at the same time. Not even Diggs and Lamb. Even if they both get an extension this year. Then by the time their cap hits are big, the salary cap is much higher. Making it NOT 40%.

Estimated large cap hit.

Diggs---2025
Lamb---2026
Parsons -2027

So why are we talking about this now?

pay micah, move on from diggs, draft a WR just in case, extend dak for some immediate cap relief and ability to move on in year or two.
You don't move on from a 23 year old corner who is arguably the best in the league.

You just don't.

That's how you get to Super Bowls. Corner play is important.

2022 NFL Cap: 208M

2024 projected NFL Cap: 235M+

2026 projected NFL Cap: 300M possible

Timing is key. Contracts signed after any major increases in the cap will scale with that increase. Sign players just before agents know about a big cap increase.
That seemed to be the plan before Covid hit and killed cap increases.

Plenty going on in the world not to count your cap before it has hatched.
