Not your typical thread. Not bashing or praising. This curiosity is from a different angle.

If you are a current player, what is your mindset?

A. I need to do my job better. We can do this.
B. I need to do my job better. But I am unsure if I can win most of my individual battles due to coaching decisions/gameplay?

If you are a potential acquisition player, what is your mindset?

A. I am not going to dallas. Things at unstable and direction is lacking.
B. I think I can help make this work. Coach just needs players to really step in, step up and win their individual battles.

I would have to think that this factors somewhat into the decision:

What does this head coach actually bring to the party that is actually, measurably, making the team better?

First I'd like to say- that I love posts like this. It's an interesting psychology quiz for a prospective Dallas Cowboy.

I believe the issue in Dallas isn't the Coach's "program" or the Player's "buy in" it's somewhere in between, and affected by all kinds of variables you can't put your finger on.

For instance- Dez Bryant is a player with 100% on the field accountability. And would answer A) to question 1 and B) to question 2. But he's a young player who sees the game from both a fan, AND player's perspective and IMO - and I have no proof- takes results personally- as well as the yapping of opposing corners, fans, rappers in night clubs- he's a Cowboy and his job is to defend his brethren and mentors.

But don't you think other players see Dez's reactions- ranting, walking off the field as time expires... see this from an outside perspective and say "man- that situation- with that QB, that Coach, that Owner..., as much as it might have been a lifelong dream to be a Dallas Cowboy I think maybe I should look elsewhere to play football."

As hard as it is to be a fan of the Cowboys- it must be worse to be a player involved in some of the most magnificent failures in the history of team sports.

I've always agreed with Jason's RKG approach to talent acquistion. I just don't think he's the guy to get the correct players to play like champions if he had them. I just don't think the man carries weight enough for locker-room talent to take him seriously. I've never heard any of Garrett's players say anything good about him after leaving Dallas- yet on the other hand, perhaps it was time for those players to go anyway and that's the kind of comfort those players had leaving their less-than-best on the football field.

My point is, it's going to take a guy that wanted to be a Dallas Cowboy for whatever reason- to be a Dallas Cowboy today. I think the rest will look elsewhere for a Coach or situation that helped mold them into a viable free-agent to begin with.

This pretty well sums up my take on Garrett - at least so far. This is what he has shown in 3 1/2 yrs. Will it change? If I were betting I would say NO. And its why I thot he should have been canned after the season and replaced.

The RKG thing needs to seriously go away forever. They are putting their hopes in another defensive tackle with alcohol problems and signed a defensive end that lost his job because he cared more about his record label.

53 guys and few will think alike. But most athletes are taught to look at themselfs and what they could do to improve as a player. Players play, they get their assignment and their job is to carry it out.

Clearly this is because Jerry is losing faith in the RKG approach. And rightfully so. Look at the SB Champs. Noone cares they are a bunch of PED devouring thugs. Same as the Kaperdouche led Niners with Aldon Smith in the fold. Noone cares.

I cared. I did.

Not so much these days. Whether it's because the Cowboys lack physicality or have passed up superior athletes for better people... I honestly don't care anymore. Why should we have to wait for the Webelos to become Eagle Scouts?

I want a team to be proud of ON the football field first and foremost, as Michael Irvin would say, "Period."

If the coach does his job better, this team wins probably 3-4 more games over the past 3.5 years.

And those games are the difference between being 8-8 and getting in the tournament.

Arizona, Green Bay, Detroit, etc. It's hard enough to win in this league, it's even harder when your coach is learning on the job.

The best approach to take to anything is to give it your best and control only what you can do.

and it's hard to argue that Jason hasn't contributed to derailment of momentum at least as many times as you've listed above.

He should never have gotten the job post-Wade, but I can understand why Jerry thought it would work. Why he's still here is a mystery known only to those two individuals. maybe jerry thinks the right addition can be that catalyst for the locker room, maybe he believes if Jason has access to his own personnel selections they will be more loyal... in any event I think that ship has sailed so what now? or am i still too shortsighted?

Ross Tucker on Sirius the other day actually answered this question - it is your position coach that matters most to you. Not the HC. And then the Coordinator. Head coach comes last on that list.

perhaps that is the politically correct answer being spilled by an employee of the NFL?

I probably agree in the sense that the position coach's opinion carries the most weight in determing your future with a franchise. but we're talking about a team that has had change up and down the coaching staff with one man left standing after three 8-8 football seasons.

Does Garrett possess the attributes to put players in a position to win the individual battles by clever play design?

Does he have the coaching skill set to inspire belief in his system - on both sides of the ball - to get the most out of his players?

Does he have the evaluation talent to recognize players who will succeed, and the foresight to see them succeeding in his system?

Does Garrett have the leadership qualities to inspire coaches to believe in his system and to take that passion and fire and filter it down to the players for their buy-in?

These are four different possibilities that have nothing to do with the rest of the organization per se.

I am not a Garrett fan. I have asked myself these questions and from my vantage point he flunks the smell test with these attributes in mind. But I could be wrong.

Put it this way: Garrett is very very smart. He know football.
The problem with Garrett as I see it with mein eyes, is he lack fire in the belly and his players might love him and respect him but they does not fear him.
Fears is a great motivator. It focuses people on the task.
Garrett should half a temper tantrum ever day at practice and in the film room and in the lockerroom.
Then the players all look at him with more respect and they say "Ohhh, here come the coach with fire in his belly."
