The Dallas Cowboys ‘DID’ Strike Gold With Alex Tanney!

by CowgirlCas on August 21, 2013 in Dallas Cowboys

Immediately upon hearing the news that the Dallas Cowboys signed quarterback Alex Tanney from Monmouth, I dug up all of the tape I could find on him. At that point, I posted the article entitled: “Did The Dallas Cowboys Strike Gold With Alex Tanney? After reviewing the footage from Oxnard and then seeing his performance in the game against the Arizona cardinals, I am here to tell you that “The Dallas Cowboys ‘DID’ Strike Gold With Alex Tanney!”

Tanney is interesting and seems to be the anti Mcgee. Lol. However with just done long term deal with Romo I would hope we roll the dice and waive him and get him to the PS. If he stays on 53 someone else goes bye bye we may need and who may play this year.

If he played very well these next two games, I'd be willing to roll with Tanney as #2 and see if I could trade Orton, assuming the cap hit wouldn't be too bad.

I just got a feeling Tanney will be better than Orton next year and Tanney won't last on the practice squad. And if Orton is in the game this year, then we don't have much of a chance winning anyway.

Tanney is not going to last on the PS. So, it's a good showing in the next two games and they make a leap of faith or we will get to see him with a new address.

now the question is, do you cut Orton and take Tanney as your number 2 and just go with the future?

No way.

Roster spots are important, but it's really a small price to pay for a season if you think you have a QB to develop. Next year, he should get a legitimate shot to move up to the backup job if he's got anything. If not, it's a high pick on a player to develop (preferably as QB3 for a season himself). If Tanney might be that guy, you can use that high pick on DL or another position of need.

this is my thought as well, but for sake of conversation.

We know Dallas isnt going to make the SB, so do you plan to shoot for a high draft choice, or do you shoot for number 2 which no one likes? Im just saying this based on the fact we are going to need that QB sooner than later, BECAUSE i dont care to repeat a post Troy Aikman again. If Tanney is as good as can be adverstised, whats it hurt to take him now and prep him? If we feel the age is going to make a difference, example he wont be taking over EVER, than yes you keep Orton, but this year or next, you are going to need another solid back up. Its either explain to Tanney hes a career back up and it it here and now and go wiht a young back up.

I like the guy, but he's Fool's Gold at this point. Practice squad material unless he continues to make strides in preseason games forcing himself on to the roster.

I'm not ready to trust Tanney based on one preseason performance but he did play well against the Cards. During the regular season, however, I'd much rather see Orton take over in the event of a Romo injury than Tanney.

i have seen nothing to think tanney won't make it to the PS. he was on the street for anyone to have and no one signed him until we did. he played well against the cards but in no way is he ready to be a nfl backup qb. he has a couple more games to prove he is ready but it's a tough sell to say cut your vet qb and ride with the guy who has never played an nfl game for a few games with your season on the line.
i would love for him to be able to replace orton now but the realist in me says he is atleast a year away and that roster spot is way to valuable to use on a guy who in all likelyhood would'nt see the field at all for several more years

OK, here is the deal. If Romo goes down for any extended period of time, this team is sunk. Kyle Orton cannot start and win in this league on any consistent basis. Therefore, why are we paying him so much money? Is it in the hopes that if Romo goes down it would only be for a game or two and we could end up with a 1-1 record? Second stringers are not that important unless they are here to be groomed to start in the future. That ain't Orton. That could be Tanney. Now, I won't annoint him based on a few good plays in one preseason game (although I gotta tell you he has the pocket presence and swagger that a good QB has) but I also do NOT want to put him on the PS and have someone else steal him away and find out later that he is a stud QB. So, if I were the GM, I would find some other place to cut and keep him on the 53 man roster. If after further evaluation he doesn't pan out we can place him on PS or cut him. I would hate to see this potenital talent go to some other team, period!!!
