if you are having a serious conversation about players, you cant be sitting there saying . the SB is a lock so we cant do this. No, you have to look at the options and say okay, the field is agasinst us but we have a player who MIGHT make a bigger difference with some time and devoplement and we cant chance on Romos health.

I'm not willing to concede that

you may not but we ll see after reality sinks in. I love the team, but i dont kid myself with the SB chants, unless they can prove otherwise. But for players and trying to avoid a post Aikman I think the team has to consider it.

Tanney is not going to last on the PS. So, it's a good showing in the next two games and they make a leap of faith or we will get to see him with a new address.

Yes he will. Did you know that he was without a team for nearly 3 months after he was cut from KC? He was out there for every single team and they could have signed him to have during camp but no one did until Dallas came along. Nobody is going to put him on their 53 based on a few good throws against scrubs in the preseason. What to know why? Because no team is going to use a roster spot for a 3rd QB that hasn't been in their camp and doesn't know their system. They have young QBs that have been in their offseason program and training camp that they like. Might a team like him for their practice squad? Sure, but he will likely choose Dallas' practice squad over any other. It would be a risk I was willing to take because if he chooses another team's practice squad over Dallas, then I don't want him anyway.

Tanney hasn't shown enough at this point so we don't gain anything by keeping him on the active roster....yea that makes sense. Romo was a nobody at one point too. I would take a chance on Tanney someone else can kick rocks..a future qb is much more important.

Yep. I don't care what he does the next two games unless he totally freaks out. He's worth trying to develop. I just don't see him making it thru waivers. Not a chance IMO.

does anybody realise that Tanney is playing against scrubs?

Yes. Don't care he had more poise than he's entitled to, pocket presence, and throws the ball accurately. In fact his showing was more amazing considering who he was playing with. He threw the ball into some tight spots and that's hard for rookies to do without gobs of INTs. He may not make it in the NFL but he deserves a look. This one's a no brainer unless there is some fatal flaw we don't know about.

every team had months to sign him and none did. now all of a sudden teams will want him on their 53 man roster? i think there is always a possibility but the odds of someone claiming him are pretty slim. if someone wanted him why did'nt they sign him when he was on the street?

Because they did not feel a need?

The local beat writers will swear that the kids gets better every time he hits the field. The question is: Can he get better fast enough to earn a protected roster spot? We'll shall soon find out.

I stopped reading after he said Tanney looked better than Andrew Luck did last year.

He did in fact at least more often than not. That's excluding Luck's 4th qtr theatrics which were very good. It's only one game but the fact he got all that time says a lot. We'll see. 9 days plus 3h 21m left.

August 8-11First Preseason Weekend.
August 15-19Second Preseason Weekend.
August 22-25Third Preseason Weekend.
August 27Prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must reduce their rosters to a maximum of 75 players
August 28All tryouts on this date and for the remainder of the season must be reported to the League
August 29Final Preseason Games.
August 31
August 31 -- Prior to 6:00 p.m., New York time, clubs must reduce rosters to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List.

September 1Claiming period for players placed on waivers at the final roster reduction will expire at 12:00
September 1Beginning at 12:00 p.m., New York time, clubs may establish a Practice Squad of eight players by signing free agents who do not have an Accrued Season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player Active List for less than nine regular season games during each of any Accrued Seasons. A player cannot serve on the Practice Squad for more than three seasons.

he was also playing with scrubs. But you ever here about a diamond in the ruff? Maybe just maybe. Heck Romo played vs scrubs in college and went undrafted. There is proof right in front of your eyes.

I wonder if he gets to start the 5th preseason game. That would be a real testament to the team wanting to take him.

We kept checkdown McGee on the roster for 3 years with his inaccurate throws, slow reads and poor pocket presence. Really all he had going for him was he could scramble well.

Tanney has a very good package of tools. What he doesn't have is Division I experience - he dominated for 4 years of Div III with 157 TDs and 14000 yards. Right now he looks like an NFL starter when he is out there - all he needs is experience to read defenses and the confidence to go through his reads more quickly and not stare down his receivers too much. Those are things that will come with familiarity with the offense, familiarity with the offense, knowledge about NFL defenses, time in the film room, time with Wade/Garrett/Callahan and experience.

You just don't let guys with his tools go without trying to develop them. I don't care what the Chiefs did. There is a reason they are perennial losers. A new GM comes in and often wants to bring in his players and let the old regime's guys go. Their experience with Tanney was with him fresh out of Div III so he may have improved a lot by being in the film room and working with coaches on the side in the offseason. I doubt very much that he had displayed this kind of ability last preseason or we wouldn't be having this conversation. Now the whole league saw what he did against Arizona and will be watching him closely in case we decide not to keep him on our 53 man roster. It wouldn't shock me if KC didn't grab him if we waived him as they get first crack.

I think everyone is down on Orton because of how he looked in a single preseason game. The Odds are stacked against Tanney becoming a good QB. This is a no brainer, Orton is the immediate future at Backup. Also, when we start looking for a QB to replace Romo lets look high on the draft boards and not on the street. This works out the best most of the time. Undrafted QB's being great are far and few between and make good stories BUT, I would rather go the high percentage route next time.
