I think the thing the Cowboys need to ask themselves is whether or not Tanney is better than a developmental Quarterback in next year's draft. I mean you can keep Tanney and still draft another Qb, but what is next year's crop like? Seems somewhat impressive.

every team had months to sign him and none did. now all of a sudden teams will want him on their 53 man roster? i think there is always a possibility but the odds of someone claiming him are pretty slim. if someone wanted him why did'nt they sign him when he was on the street?

If he had never played in the preseason, then your theory would be pretty sound. However the playing time he has received and what he has shown in the preseason may have changed the possibility of him making it to the practice squad. I would say that the odds of it happening are less than it was before he played in the preseason .... wouldn't you? Personally, I think he is a lot better than the guy that was originally the 3rd string QB. I will also have to admit that Orton has been pretty sporadic in the preseason.

now the question is, do you cut Orton and take Tanney as your number 2 and just go with the future?

Absolutely not! How many regular season NFL starts does Tanney have? Nuff said!

Wanting to keep someone on as 3rd QB for developmental purposes is far away from "anointing oil". Sometimes I really wish BP was never here and the anointing oil phrase is one of my least favorite sayings.

I will echo your disdain for the statement about the anointing oil. It wears me slick. Tapping on the brakes, let's kick the tires, he may have some tread left, and we as fans need to take it one game at a time are equally as annoying to me.

I don't know but wherever he is I'm sure he's enjoying his time with his beautiful wife. She was easily the hottest wife/girlfriend of anyone on the team.

I just looked it up. Evidently Magee is with Houston.

His wife is definitely good looking, but not sure if more than Romos'. I'll have to do more research:)

I hope Tanny is what some feel he is but right now I can't say Dallas hit gold. As for Orton I fully expect him to be the backup and the main reason is experiance. Backups do not get the reps during the reg season so having a guy who has seen everything a defense can throw at you as opposed to a wet behind the ear player. For now I think Tanny goes to PS

Tanney did virtually nothing in the first 2 preseason games. He completed 45.5% of his passes in the first game with a passer rating of 61.9. He was 1-6 in the second game and had a passer rating of 39.6 and now after one good game playing behind the starting OL for a series vs scrubs you have some wanting to dump Orton for him. I'm not saying Tanney doesn't have some potential but some need to slam on the brakes. No way do you dump a solid backup QB who's only 31 years old for a QB who's played against nothing but scrubs and has never started a regular season NFL game. We would be holding our breath with every hit Romo takes.

If the Cowboys left themselves with an inexperienced backup QB who's never played against quality competition in a regular season game and Romo were to go down 5-6 games the season would be over! At least an experienced QB like Orton can possibly keep you afloat for a few games until Romo returns. Tanney vs RG3, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees would be ugly.

IF Romo goes down 5-6 games, the season is over regardless. There is a reason Orton is a back-up and by all accounts has looked horrible in camp and PS games.

he was also playing with scrubs. But you ever here about a diamond in the ruff? Maybe just maybe. Heck Romo played vs scrubs in college and went undrafted. There is proof right in front of your eyes.

The pnly reason Romo is a Cowboy not is because Carter ruined his career. The Cowboys were going to cut him until that happened with Carter

How would RG3, Manning or Brees tackle Tanney from the bench? Wouldn't that result in a penalty on the opposing team and cause them to be ejected? In that respect wouldn't we want them to tackle Tanney?

I don't like slamming on my brakes on this forum, or even tapping on them. I like to mash the accelerator to the floor.

So what's Orton's excuse?

Orton played very well in the first 2 preseason games. He was 2-3 vs Miami with a passer rating of 92.4. He was 6-6 vs Oakland and threw a beautiful TD pass to Beasley. He didn't play well vs AZ but that's one game. Although Romo has played pretty well he's only led the first team offense to 3 points. FANS live in the moment here and all it takes is ONE good game for most to come to a conclusion on something. No way would I go with Tanney as the backup until I see him play solid against starting players. Making plays against backups and bubble players in a preseason game doesn't impress me. He would be exposed big time in a regular season game against a good team. He has potential but has a long way to go.

What? Better go back and read my post again I was talking about if Tanney was the backup and was forced to play for 5-6 games if Romo were injured.

Orton played good in the first 2 preseason games he was 6-6 vs Oakland and tossed a beautiful TD pass to Beasley. Orton is a backup but has a lot of starting experience. He's considered by some as the best backup in the league he gives the Cowboys a chance to stay afloat if Romo only goes down for a few games. If Romo were to go down for 5 games going 3-2 still gives the Cowboys a chance to stay in the hunt. Orton has a wealth of experience and has won a number of games in the league including a win over a 15-1 Packers team in 2011. Orton has had fewer attempts than any of the Cowboys QB's in preseason and Tanney has had the most.

Tanney is going up against the least talented players in the 4th quarter of these games. He's going up against bubble players most of which will be cut and he ended up throwing a pick with the game on the line last week. You throw him in a regular season game and I can promise you he won't look very good. No one is game planning him in these preseason games he's simply not ready to be a backup and have to start a regular season game if needed.

Tanney is interesting and seems to be the anti Mcgee. Lol. However with just done long term deal with Romo I would hope we roll the dice and waive him and get him to the PS. If he stays on 53 someone else goes bye bye we may need and who may play this year.

I don't think it's that big of a deal if Dallas keeps Tanney on the 53 over someone who isn't going to dress during the season. It isn't likely, for instance, that Dallas will take a fourth running back or sixth receiver to games, so if Tanney is kept over Tanner or Armstrong, it doesn't really matter.
