Dez not developing as a route runner over his 8 year tenure has had a significant impact on this season's team.

With the limited time that coaches have with players I think the Cowboys coaches automatically assumed that a player of Dez's stature would work on his craft of running routes on his own like Julio, Antonio and O'Dell and other top WRs. Obviously they assumed wrong. Enter Sanjay Lal.

Sanjay has these young guys and even the vets fully engaged on their craft. They've been taking time after practice to go over the technical aspects of running routes ect.

I really think that ownership and the coaches don't want to find themselves 8 years from now with a WR that still runs routes like a rookie. Dez still having an impact on the team.

It amazes me that people don't understand what a difference a rookie qb vs a franchise qb makes.....lol

The jump ball was literally his one parlor trick. Once he couldn't do that anymore, Dez was exposed for what he is

Dez had a ton of athleticism and as a result could go up and get passes thrown up for grabs. The problem is that injuries and father time take away that advantage. Yes there was also a rookie QB but I suspect that his numbers would have declined anyway. If you remember he has been hurt each year over the past few years. That wasn't a result of the QB but father time who catches up to us all.

Yes as Dez aged and lost a step, he never tried to overcome this by improving his Route running.

That was uninjured Dez years. He wasn't the same after 2014.

I see where you coming from but couple issues .....

** Beasley was quoted saying he's learned more about route running this offseason than any of years with the team

** If Dez route running had such a negative impact. why FO gave him $70M contract before forcing him to clean up that area of his game. Pay me $70M is saying you're pretty damn happy with my game.

** While I agree route running on this team has been an issue, just not sure if it more Romo effect than Dez. Like I said in a thread earlier this year, Romo retiring left a huge offensive hold on this team. He was like an unofficial on-field offensive coor that knew EVERY OFFENSIVE player's assignment on any and/or every play called from the sideline. His ability to improvise and knowledge of the game allowed him to camouflage certain player weaknesses on any given play. Think it's a coincidence we're hearing anything about route running from FO 7+ years with Romo as a starter, I'm not sure. Think it's a coincidence we hearing route running with a new starting QB? Think it's a coincidence Stephen compared Dak's skill set closer to Troy ( system QB ) than Romo?

IMO Dez is who Dez has always been, a player who game is built around physicality and that fine in the right system, with the right QB. Whereas Romo could so-called throw him open, Dak or the next QB can not. Almost as if Dez was drafted into a perfect storm ( right QB, coach, offensive, GM, owner, and scheme ) that overlooked his technical weaknesses until it came to a head ( Romo retiring ).

Sounds like Romo made Dez. Even Romo complained about Dez and recently admitted he had to learn how to high point Dez even when he was covered. Documented. But that's the past. Glad that JG and ownership learned from their mistakes and are now teaching or receivers how to run routes even if it takes time after practice

So these professional coaches haven’t figured out Dez couldn’t run routes all these years. They sat around and paid him $70 million and didn’t care.

Suddenly something woke up in the coaching staff and they finally figured out WRs should learn routes?
Cole is 30 years old and he just admitted he didn’t know how to run routes until This offseason?
That’s not a problem?

So JG makes $5 million per year and he didn’t realize WR coaches are supposed to teach route running until this offseason?

Wow this is scary.

He didn't stay in top athletic shape and had a bad attitude. Yes he looked better when Romo was here. Over time both those things definately had an affect on the field. He was younger a better athlete then. Even if Romo were the opening day starter this year we wouldn't see the same Dez. He simply isn't the same player.

Putting the blame on Dak is just ignoring who Dez really is right now.

As long as Romo knew how to throw to him and they were productive there obviously was no problem. But again they learned and are making moves now to not paint them into a corner when or if they lose this particular franchise QB.

How do you know that? I’m not sure how a premiere WR is still sitting at home. How does the other GM’s in this league allow that to happen?

You don’t think that age, injuries and lack of working his craft has knocked him out of the “Premier WR” category.

That is all true and just a complete failure from the top to the bottom of the organization.

BUT DEZ IS STILL TO THIS DAY UNEMPLOYED! That right there speaks volumes more then anything and anyone’s opinion on this or any other forum!
