he Eagles just signed the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year and leading rusher away from their division rivals. Surely they're the winners in this transaction?
Dallas will not be lauded for its offseason. Philadelphia, after being painted a dumpster fire early in the offseason, is being lauded after the DeMarco Murray signing. So what's the deal? Have the Cowboys slipped behind the Eagles in the race for the NFC East? Was this Chip Kelly's master plan all along? Here are three reasons that the Dallas Cowboys, supposed lords of glitz and glamour, won this offseason through stable and responsible thinking. At the same time the Eagles are transforming into the team that chases everything shiny, like Jerry Jones used to do.
1. The Eagles paid for past performance.
Dallas had a price that it was not willing to go above, and Philadelphia surpassed it. Dallas, rather than giving in and paying more, stuck to their guns and said goodbye to the reigning Offensive Player of the Year. Six or seven years ago, Dallas would have paid whatever it took to keep a player like Murray, and would inevitably been saddled with a giant contract for a declining player. Philadelphia wins free agency in 2015. And Tampa Bay won free agency in 2014. DeMarco is extremely unlikely to ever put up numbers like he did in 2014, which leads to point number two.
