Whether the Cowboys extend Dak or they let him walk-the end is much closer than the beginning. I watched a few big games (just the actual offensive plays) from earlier in his career-and came away with the same feeling that I got at the time. Dak was extremely reliant on his running ability and the star of the offense for the first several years was Zeke/offensive line. Everything was based off of the rushing game and they would sneak some occasional passes in to their best receiver playmakers (typically stop or in breaking routes). He looked awful at throwing routes running away from him most plays.

The offense has changed obviously without a dominant rushing attack. Dak is better in the pocket now, but it still looks like he’s playing someone else’s game too often and especially against top defenses. I think he is around a maximum of 5 more seasons in the league, and any other significant lower body injury could dramatically shorten that.

We’ll see what happens, but I would think all Cowboys’ fans would be fine at thinking of future teams not featuring the greatness of Dak Prescott. Considering it will be happening fairly soon either way.

I just don't think we need to pay this QB to get these results. I think we can make the playoffs with any decent QB. We don't need to pay a QB that's decent to good 60M a year. Dak is not that much better than Mayfield or Carr. Why would you pay him 60M a year? We can not win a SB with any of those QBs.

I think most of us are fine with moving on. We are just disappointed the front office doesn't have a plan in place to replace Dak. We should have been drafting and acquiring QBs prior to now to be prepared for this possibility. The front office continues to ignore the most important position on the field.

In addition, it’s not like anyone should expect his performance to improve with age. Most QB’s-even pocket passers (which Dak is not), start declining around his age and the next few years. Aaron Rodgers, Ben Roethlisberger, Brett Favre, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and Peyton Manning make fans believe that most QB’s can play well in their late 30’s and early 40’s. The problem is those QB’s were extremely proficient pocket passers and rollout passers their entire careers along with having hall of fame arm and/or position talent.

They are not ignoring the position. They will extend Dak. That ought to make some folks on here go crazy.

A good chance that he has at least 4 more years in Dallas.

They have been busy putting all the eggs into the Dak basket. That’s the problem for some football minds. They cannot objectively differentiate the offensive success with QB play. The big problem is there are QB’s that succeed really quickly at times in the right circumstances, and everyone believes they would succeed in any circumstance. Same goes for the QB’s that fail in certain circumstances, and others believe they would fail in all other circumstances.

I know many organizations just try for fielding a competitive team, but do not care about postseason success. Sometimes, I think the Cowboys draft to attempt to make sure they are at least competitive. They take big swings in the second round on injury concern/character concern guys (though they seem like they’ve taken a couple years off). I’m not sure why they never took a bigger swing at the position for depth and competition.

Yeah, just not a good chance that the 4 years approach his previous best performances. Injuries and declining play happen for the enormous bulk of QB’s around this age. Just the way it is and always will be-for good not great QB’s (and he will never be in the great echelon-that’s fantasy land).

It seems if one side or the other says "trade me" or "we want to trade you" it would happen, but neither are budging.

There’s nothing we can do about it. It’s not like anyone should be surprised that Jerry and Stephen would do something stupid-just more of the same. Not extending him would actually shock me.

9 seasons too late...all they had to do was watch his college tape vs elite teams....same Dak then exists now.

This is a great, detailed post, but I have one question.

If Dak was extremely reliant on his running ability and a star running back/running game.... how was he able to become 2nd team All Pro without a star running back and probably the weakest running game offensively of his career?

Our running game didn't benefit him at all during his best season as a NFL quarterback.

Did you read my entire post? I remarked about his early career and him getting better from the pocket in his more recent years.
