The Commanders have serious interest in Denver quarterback Jay Cutler, an NFL source said Tuesday, and have entered talks about a possible three-way deal to acquire him.

Two NFL sources confirmed the possibility of a three-way trade, with Kansas City being mentioned by one source as a possibility.

“They’re trying to do something,” one NFL source said of the Commanders. “Whether or not it materializes is another matter, but [Commanders owner Dan Snyder] is on this hard. They don’t trust Jason Campbell.”

Cutler is involved in a dispute with Denver after the Broncos had discussions about trading him to New England for quarterback Matt Cassel. First-year Broncos coach Josh McDaniels met with Culter this past weekend. Afterward, Cutler said he could not trust McDaniels and wanted to be traded.

Denver has said they don’t want to trade Cutler for draft picks, meaning the Commanders or the third team would have to surrender at least one top player. The Commanders could also end up with Denver tight end Tony Scheffler, who is represented by the same agent as Culter — Bus Cook.

Fueling the speculation is the close relationship between former Denver coach Mike Shanahan and Commanders executive vice president Vinny Cerrato. Shanahan, who traded several times with Cerrato while with Denver, could provide the endorsement needed for Cutler.

Also, after the season Cerrato gave Campbell a tepid endorsement as Washington’s quarterback of the future. Campbell is entering the last year of his contract and the Commanders have not had discussions about extending his deal.

Cerrato did not immediately return a message Tuesday. Commanders coach Jim Zorn has praised Campbell publicly this offseason.

The strong-armed Cutler, 25, made the Pro Bowl this past season after throwing 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions. In three seasons he’s tossed 54 touchdowns and 37 interceptions. In 16 games this past season, Campbell threw 13 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Cutler signed a six-year, $48-million contract in 2006. Campbell has a base salary of $2.5 million this season with a cap number of $7.5 million.

I think Cutler is a very good young QB, so I'd rather the skins not get him.

If they do trade for him however, they will likely get fleeced as they always do.

Not too worried. They will have to lose 1-2 good players and their top pick and maybe more. Then they'll have to give him $10 million a year. Since Jason Campbell has been proven to be on the wrong side of good, of course they have interest. I doubt they get it done though. Their rep around the league is that they get fleeced in trades so Denver will surely bend them over before trading Cutler to them. If they have to give up say Cooley, Landry, and a #1 to make it work then I say go for it!

Do the Commanders have any good young players to offer?

Chris Cooley's about the closest thing I can think of to a player on their roster worth trading for. Maybe the safety Landry.

It would be agood move for Lil Danny assuming all he gives up is his #1 to the third team involved. Get your quaterback for the next 10 years. Though I think they need some serious O Line help.

It will cost them an arm and a leg...Then again Danny has no problem tossing around draft picks..

They still wouldn't be a contender IMO.

If this does happen (doubt it, because I can't see how the Skins could afford him), it would be interesting to see what they would say about Cutler's turnovers considering how they harp on Romo's turnovers. Cutler has a tendency to turn it over as well, but IF he were to become a Commander, I'm sure they would have plenty of excuses prepared. :)

Commanders GM responds to the article:

That was the word from Commanders front office boss Vinny Cerrato this afternoon when I questioned him about the rumors flying around the Internet about Washington trading Jason Campbell, whose contract is up after this season, to Denver for unhappy fellow quarterback Jay Cutler.

Cerrato added, "We haven't talked to anyone" when asked about Cutler and re-iterated that "Jason is going to be our quarterback this season."

Lil' Danny needs to concentrate on Six Flags instead of his favorite team...

Six Flags is going bankrupt but is enjoyed by millions more people than the skins...

Get your priorities straight little man...

They're so dumb this might be true.

Hey I wonder if this will send Campbell into a hissy fit?

I said it in another post with it being detroit giving their 2nd round pick and a player/another pick for cutler and then denver pushing those picks to KC for Cassel. A similar scenario could happen with the deadskins. One way or another mcdaniels is going to try and get his boy Cassel.

I would not want to see Cutler in the NFC East.

Call me crazy, but I think it would make for some exciting matchups for the Skins to land Cutler...and have him and Romo face off twice a season.

I'm ready. Do it Danny boy.

The Broncos love fleecing the Skins in trades.

They traded Portis to the Skins for Champ Bailey and the pick that turned into Tatum Bell in 2004.

They traded their first rounder in 2005 (Number 25) to the Skins for a 3rd in '05 and a 1st and 4th in '06... that 4th became Brandon Marshall and the 1st was used to move up and get Cutler.

In '06, the Broncos sent Ashley Lelie to the Falcons, the Skins got TJ Duckett and the Broncos got the Skins 3rd and 4th round picks.

It's been a few years, but I'm pretty confident that if the Skins are trading with the Broncos, the Broncos are getting the better end of the deal.

Don't really care if Commanders trade for Cutler he'll just be another sack statistic on DWare's resume. The only quarterbacks who worry me are Tom Brady and Peyton Manning thank goodness they play in the AFC.

The Jason Campbell era is over, seemingly only moments after it began.
