The defense was mostly responsible for the Atlanta and saints game. Yesterday it was mostly offense.

The defense was great yesterday. I'm not even bothered by the pick plays, because I don't think it's their fault that the league just lets those happen. It was really great to see against a very good offensive team.

That defense actually looked like a championship defense at the beginning of the game. I was shocked. Of course you can't have them out on the field the whole game. When you know your offense can't even score a TD, it's demoralizing.

Offense scored zero points against Atlanta in the second half and managed only 20 against an atrocious Saints defense.

How do they not hold equally the same blame?

Maybe because they scored 28 the first half against Atlanta. I never thought that was even possible. Weeden exceeded my expectations. Atlanta just carved up the Cowboys defense that second half. As for the Saints game, the offense did tie the game up and the defense gave it away. I'm not saying the offense was great but it was good enough to win. I agree it's time to bench Weeden though. The offense needs a spark.

That's great they scored 28 points, but you can't be scoreless in the second half against an average at best Atlanta Falcons defense. What's most troubling if the Cowboys haven't faced really any good defenses this season and still haven't been able to top 28 points. That's too much pressure on a defense we know was depleted particularly up front and you can't expect them to be able to not get gassed.

What do you expect when the defense is on the field all game? Do you honestly expect them to be able to hold up? The Cowboys can't run the ball at all and the only thing we've been able to do consistently in the pass game is dump off passes to the backs. The formula success last year was controlling the clock and line of scrimmage and protecting the defense so they don't get exposed. Dallas has been unable to do the same this season. The defense isn't talented enough to overcome such an inept offense. I'm not sure any defense can overcome such ineptitude.

Also lol @ the Eagles having a top five defense last season. They gave up more big plays than about anyone in the league last year. That's not a good defensive unit.

perception. against NE we had the ball for over 33 minutes, which means the defense was on the field for 26. against NO, it was almost 30 minutes. against Atlanta we had the advantage in the first half, but Atlanta had the advantage in the second half.

last year our avg TOP was uner 33 minutes. the year before it was 29 and the year before that was 31.

so there is a perception that this defense is on the field an inordinate amount of time. which is far from the truth.

so you call the offense inept, yet the defense not talented? is the offense talented with the likes of Williams, street and lucky white head and branden weeden? we have Claiborne, carr, jones, church, Crawford, Lawrence, lee, hitchens, mcclain on the defense.

why are you defending the defense so much? why all the excuses? why being blind to the crap on the defense? this defense right now is allowing up over 42% 3rd down completion. that sucks. that means they are not able to get off the field. that was the problem two years ago. it was the problem last year, but the offense was able to mask it for them.

where is the defensive accountability?

You are the one who said 32 when it mattered. Fact is their starting position was 34. I said 40. So I was off by 6 yards. Big deal.

You being butthurt and blaming the defense for the loss is ridiculous. Our offense scored 6 points. For you to to blame the defense for not holding the best offense in the NFL to less than 6 points tells everyone that you have no clue how football game is played.

just 6 yards. yeah, yards don't matter. I didn't say 32 when it mattered. I said average was 32 until the last two possessions and it got pushed up to 34. by then the game was over. when it mattered. when the game was still within reach. NE started on their 20 twice and marched down the field and scored two TDs.

our offense scored 28 points against Atlanta. had a 14 point lead. in the second half Atlanta scored 22 points on 3 drives out of 4. they just marched down the field from their 11, 13 and 38 yard line and scored a TD every time. same in the NO game. long drives with inability to get off the field. missed assignments. missed tackles. wrong angles. wrong coverage. total confusion on defense.

I am not blaming the defense for this loss. I am blaming the defense in general. they have been pretty bad. last year they weren't that good and the offense masked their short coming. where is the defensive accountability? what's their job just to get off the field once in a while and hope the offense can save their arse. there is a boat load of talent on the defense. lots of investment. yet they have underwhelmed and under produced. is Marinelli the right man for the job?

I doubt if you have a clue about football since your point is that its all about offense and the defense has zero responsibility in winning a game. if you expect a bunch of no talent players like wiliams, street, lucky whitehead and randle along with Weeden who has been proven to be a very crappy QB to win games in this league...then you either have an agenda to drive or you don't have basic understanding of NFL football

the defense allowed long TD scores from Atlanta 11, 13, and 32. same with NO game with TD drives of 80 yards and same against NE in the 2nd half two TD drives of 80 yards to open the 2nd half. you talk about defense being depleted, yet criticize the offense...is the offense not depleted? is offensive scheme suppose to over come lack of talent? isn't the same true for defense?

Our schedule is easy too, we've got 3 NFC East teams and 3 AFC South teams left to play. I'll be shocked if we don't win 14 games at least.

Our offense didn't even play well today and still put up 30 our o-line played about as bad as it has in a year.

Yeah, don't give the only unit on our team that played any good any credit. They got exposed by a good D Line.

some have alluded that the defense is not talented, but blame the offense for lack of scheme and innovation. ignoring the fact that the offense right now lacks talent. they mention that Romo and Dez have been responsible for offensive success (well Duh!!!) and the scheme lacks...

as I have mentioned this offense is fairly easy to defend right now, mostly because of lack of talent and play makers.
  • The Patriots had a nice game plan in dealing with the two main weapons on this Dallas offense – Jason Witten and Cole Beasley. Even in the second half when the game was in hand, Witten and Beasley were still drawing double coverage. Witten was dealing with two safeties in dime packages and a drop defensive end and safety in base defenses. The Patriots made Beasley an upfield player by cutting off his underneath routes. There was one particular snap on third down where they buzzed Rob Ninkovich to the flat in order to cut him off from running the slant, which Weeden wanted to throw.
  • I had a scout from another team that studies the Cowboys weekly tell me that Brandon Weeden will never be more than a really good 7-on-7 quarterback. When there is no rush and the pocket is comfortable, he is going to make throws all day. As much as I wanted to disagree with that thought, I couldn’t. Weeden had his opportunities to make throws in this game, but he chose not to. When he needed to throw with anticipation – he didn’t. When he needed to show some patience and allow the routes to develop – he didn’t. Weeden didn’t take advantage of the times where he had a clean pocket to take a shot on a quick out or comeback route. The film didn’t show these receivers winning on many of their routes, but the ones where they did, he either didn’t take a chance or was late with the throw or his accuracy was off. Even though the game had been decided – his throw to Terrance Williams on fourth down was inexcusable. Williams probably ran his best route of the year and for him not to be rewarded for it tells you all you need to know about the current quarterback situation.

  • If Lucky Whitehead is going to get more opportunities for offensive snaps – he is going to need to find ways to finish those chances he gets. His drop in the first quarter was on him, plain and simple. When the play is designed to create space, as it was with he and Beasley crossing in the middle -- as a receiver you’ve got to catch that ball. If he makes that catch he is going to most likely grab a first down and keep that drive going – instead the next play Beasley makes a catch and was short. I will say that later there were some snaps where Whitehead was open, but Weeden decided to go another direction and this might have been due to his inability to make that catch for him.
the plays put the players in position to succeed, but when they don't execute what is there to do? yeah...bench the player....in case of Weeden that may happen, but what about the rest? we are down to the last WR on the team, so do you bench Whitehead? right now escobar and street are AWOL or MIA....

It takes talent and the right kind of talent to win in the NFL. anyone think otherwise is just looking for something and has an agenda to drive. right now this offense is missing a lot, specially in key positions. no scheme can over come that.

They are not running the ball with any level of consistency.
The raw numbers are there, for sure. But, they are reliant on a few big runs against Atlanta and New Orleans to push those numbers up. The down-by-down battering ram is not what it was. So, instead of 2nd and 6, there is a lot more of 2nd and 9 facing this offense. It seems like it is all tied to the passing attack being so pedestrian, that defenses are scheming away the strength of the zone running game by pushing numbers forward, but either way, it is making the running game look average.

QB play went from very good to something you have to scheme around. I spent plenty of time on this yesterday and if you would like to read it you may by clicking here, but basically, they aren't getting what they need out of their QB play. It absolutely isn't the whole problem, but it is also absolutely something that must be addressed.

Weeden-1st 3 plays vs Pats left 62 y on the field by being late with ball, inaccurate & holding ball.Too many dump offs too

3) - The Offense has lost all of its juice. This is a rather simple reality that may not have much of a solution except for healing. The Cowboys just don't have their explosive players available. Every offense has a few players who strike fear into the defense because they are game-breakers. Make one mistake - slip one time - and that could be the time he takes the ball to the house. Well, the Cowboys have lost Dez Bryant and Lance Dunbar. The two that instilled fear. Those who remain have not shown to be game-breakers. They are solid NFL players (Witten will go to the Hall of Fame), but when they beat you, it is generally for 12 yards, not 42. Nobody is dealing with fear when they prepare to play the current version of the Cowboys

The average starting position got pushed down due to their last posession when they got the ball on their 6 yard line when we couldn't score on 4 downs. Do you even know how average works?

wow, son now you are trying to teach me about averages. ...you said the announcers said the average field position is 40. I provided the actual values. in fact since you have decided to remove field positions that don't fit your argument, then I will do the same and remove the ones they started in our end of the field and that brings the average to mid 20's...... facts are facts. two possessions in the second half started on NE 20.... do you want to exclude those since it doesn't fit your argument? do you have any idea how averages work? doesn't sound like it.

Not the defenses fault we lost to the Pats. No team can play defense for 60 minutes and win.

really? really? you want to go there? so defenses are pretty much useless in the NFL? not accountable for anything? Denver beat Oakland because their defense scored a TD.... I can give you 100s of examples of teams winning with defense. Ravens team won a superbowl with the offense averaging 9 points a game for quite a few games. defense stepped up. dominated. won games....

Do your math homework kid. Smaller number means smaller average. Ask your teacher about how average works before posting on the forums.

btw, if you actually practiced reading the posts instead of just typing something after the first few words, you would see that I said, average starting position was 34 not counting the last two NE drives.....that includes the 6 yard line start....
