I bought the team media guide in 1996. From that I gleaned information that made the Jimmy era understandable from as success stand point.

Jimmy had 105 draft picks during his time at the helm. He traded away a goodly amount, leaving him 66 picks. I graded those picks out with a simple system. Didn't make the team, back-up, starter, star. Of the 66 picks Jimmy selected he hit on starter or above on 37 picks.

Make no mistake, Jimmy and his coaches were the ones selecting the players. It only made sense because they had, as a coaching unit, either recruited, or schemed against the college players for four years prior and four when when Jimmy ran the Cowboys.

Landry didn't build a team, he coached it. Schram and Murch and then Bright weathered the highs and lows of NFL franchise infancy.
Jimmy didn't build a team, but he did implode a gawd-awful team with an aging Danny White,

Some from the middle last century might say Landry, Ernie Stoutner,
Dick Nolan, Raymond Berry, Dan Reeves, Gene Stallings, Mike Ditka, and John Mackovic was the greatest assemblage of coaching talent, and I might agree. (But this gathering was done over 30 years; Jimmy did his thing in 5 years.)

But then came Jimmy, ridiculed that he wouldn't be playing the Eastern Carolinas of the world anymore, he didn't know NFL workings, etc. ad nauseum. Even made fun of his helmet-like hair. Blimey!
But Jimmy made them eat their words and assembled, as it seems in me crowded, echo-y mind, the greatest tight-knit coaching staff in our history in 1993.
Look at this list from 1993, lads and solar panel grifters, the coaching greatness we shant see again in our lifetimes.
Or am I just romanticizing this era?

Whenever I see the name Dave Campo I get bad flashbacks to the 2000 - 2002 seasons when he was Head Coach; {3 years in a row losing 11 games}.** Jerruh Jones loved him because he was the ultimate "good soldier" and "yes man" who followed his orders to the bitter end without any push back.. Across 5 years, Jimmy brought together in 1993 a great coaching staff. I'd say the greatest staff in Cowboys history.

It wasn't Campo"s fault. He just took one for the team.

We were in salary cap hell and Jerry couldn't have hired a decent coach. Every coach knew that if he took the job he was going to be a failure before he started.

Mike ditka. Dan Reeves and Ernie Stautner these men not only one championships as players as coaches with the cowboys but went on to get to super bowls and European championships.

These men built their own great careers after they coached with the cowboys. What did Jimmy's coaches do after they left the cowboys.

I dont think Norv Turner was very good. Our offense was very limited and basic. Its just that people could rarely stop if because of our talent.

Maybe. Longevity has to enter into this, though. Unfortunately for Jimmy, Tom Landry did it year after year for a long time.

Are you looking for just names for any one year of coaching? I suppose we would have to look at who Parcells assembled in 2005 then.

Actually Tom Landry built the dynasty from nothing that Jimmy Johnson added onto. Both achieved greatness this sport demands in their own respective ways,

and jimmy didn't implode it...he already had michael irvin...nate newton...mark tuinei...kevin gogan...ken norton...bill bates...jim jeffcoat...kelvin martin...all landry cowboys who played major roles in the turn around.

I would think that the rude and crude Tuna knew a network of good coaches, I just canna think of any Parcells-era guys who come to mind.

But the Jimmy era conjures le images of GREAT assistant coaches who went on to flop in the NFL and the East Carolinas of the uncivilized world.
