The head coach killer

Every week there’s a new thread about some hot shot college or pro head coach that someone thinks would be a great head coach here. OMG, the lists are almost endless and they usually contain people that Jerry would never hire because they would steal his spotlight, or they are people that would never lower their standards to work for a meddling fool like Jerry.

Have you ever noticed that when a head coach comes to work for Jerry, their NFL career as a HEAD COACH is toast? If you look at the list of 7 former Cowboys head coaches under Jerral Wayne Jones, only two went on to be a HC again in the NFL, and neither were successful.

Jerry is a head coach killer. After working for Jerry, his former HCs are never the same or better. Here’s what I mean- Let’s look at the 7 former HCs we’ve had under Jerry and how their career went after leaving Big D:

1. Jimmy Johnson- left Dallas in ‘94- became HC of Dolphins from 96-98, had two winning seasons and won a playoff game but was never that great again. Retired from coaching.

2. Barry Switzer- HC here from 94-97. Jerry fired him after 97 season and he has never been a HC again.

3. Chan Gailey- HC here 98-99. One winning season, zero playoff wins. Was not hired again as an NFL HC until 2010 in Buffalo. He was fired there in 2012 with no success.

4. Dave Campo- HC here from 2000-2002. Three straight losing seasons. Never hired as an NFL head coach again.

5. Bill Parcells- HC here 2003-06. The HOF coach restocked the talent pool here but despite making playoffs twice in his tenure, never won a playoff game. Parcells has never coached again after leaving here.

6. Wade Phillips- HC here for 2007-half of 2010- had three winning seasons, but won one playoff game with what was the best talent we had had in a long time. Phillips has remained a good DC, but has never been hired as a HC again in NFL.

7. Jason Garrett- HC from mid 2010- present. Two playoff appearances in 8 seasons. You know the story. Raise your hand if you think Garrett has a future again as an NFL HC. I’m not raising mine.

It appears that working for Jerry is not a boost for a guy’s head coaching career in the NFL. He’s a head coach killer. Jerry is a “King Midas” when it comes to making money. He’s the opposite when it comes to his on field product.

So again...why would an up and coming star coach want to come and work for this 76 year old meddler who still thinks he’s a football guy? Or why would a formerly successful old school guy want to come here and put up with the circus Jerry loves?

I believe unless Garrett pulls a miracle this season, which is extremely doubtful, he’s gone at seasons end. My hope is Jerry allows Stephen hire the next HC. I’m not a huge fan of SJ but at least it’s not the “curse of JJ”. Maybe SJ will reverse the coach killing curse of the last two decades.

I’m sorry but I can’t stand it when someone tries to disrespect Jimmy Johnson. Jimmy should have been the next Bill Walsh or Bill Belichick.
If it wasn’t for ego and Jerry’s utter stupidity we win at least two more SB’s
That is one of the biggest what ifs in sports.

Jimmy from day one wanted to get rid of Marino but the ownership would not let him. Jimmy was cold blooded like Bill B, don’t get emotional about players, make the right decision for the organization. He was a man ahead of his time. I really miss those amazing 5 years.

GM Jerry will be a blight upon any head coach who works for him. It's like that's his calling!

Isn’t that another indictment of this owner/GM? He’s never seemingly interested in hiring a HC with NFL bonafides. Other than Jimmy and Parcells, it’s a list of guys without much NFL HC pedigree.

Jimmy didn't have any NFL HC pedigree either at the time Jerry hired him. In any case, I don't think it's always a bad thing to go with someone without an NFL HC pedigree, because realistically there aren't going to many successful NFL head coaches available to hire. But if the team has been struggling for awhile, and a Parcells level guy, or something close, happens to be available, then Jerry has to jump on it.

I think part of Jerry's problem is he is intent on hiring someone that others might not, probably out of that same old need we've seen before to be looked at as a "football guy" who has the vision to find talent others might not.

Looking at the hires after Jimmy ....

Switzer had actually been retired for 5 years before Jerry hired him, and Jerry probably thought he was going to get another Jimmy Johnson situation by hiring someone he knew from college. He was okay as a stop gap, but not a long term solution. Gailey's credentials were limited in that he only had head coaching experience through 3 years at small colleges and a couple of years in the WFL, and only had limited, though somewhat successful, experience as an NFL assistant. Campo was a joke from the outset. I can't imagine what Jerry was thinking with that hire. Parcells was a good move, and I at least understood the Wade Phillips hire in that we were only a couple of years into the transition to a 3-4 defense, although the smarter move would have been hiring another head coach and hire Wade as the DC. Jason was a nice idea - a former Cowboy player thought to have a strong football mind - but he was also a huge stretch. Jason had not earned his way and had very little coaching experience in any role, so there no truly defensible foundation for the hire.

Any young and hungry coach will jump at the chance. Richard will jump at the chance, McVay would have jumped at the chance when he was looking. The real problem is getting an established coach to come here. We don't need tnat, we need a young and hungry coach. The trick is to find the right one.

If a guy wants to coach in the NFL he'll take the job. There's only a few openings a year. Sure you could wait it out, bot the opportunities are few and far between with no gurantees. Jerry doesn't make things easy so money will help. But I believe they can get a quality coach.

Good point. And I agree that getting a coach here with a history of success ain’t coming here. Besides, those are the guys JJ doesn’t feel comfortable with. A young up and comer from either college or as a young NFL asst. is probably our only hope.

cant count Jason yet
if Parcells wanted to coach more he would have
that leaves 3 out of 5 who never coached again or 60%, I would venture to guess that pretty much the rate of all guys hired as a head coach
so Im not buying the 'coach-killer" thing

Sad but I liked the Wade Phillips years better than the Garrett years. Wade found just as much success in a quarter of the time. What does that say about Garrett? LOL

It continues to amaze me so many fans are still struggling coming to grips with Jerry’s agendas with HC’s and why we’re so limited.

Like there is some normal hope for a solution awaiting us with Jerry awakening to some type of absolution.

Jimmy Johnson was a a great college coach and was rumored for several NFL jobs. Jerry had a relationship from them playing together at Arkansas. This wasn't a brilliant hire, it was a familiar one.

Barry Switzer, who they both played for at Arkansas, was never a NFL coach and was out of college football for years when Jerry hired him. He had zero business being an NFL coach.

Chan Gailey was supposed to be the hot offensive coordinator when he was nabbed, Jerry wanted offensive innovation after getting rid of Switzer who ran the wishbone at Oklahoma.

Dave Campo was a guy who had just been around from Jimmy to Barry to Chan Gailey. He had no business being a head coach either.

Bill Parcells was a legend and drunk Jerry admitted he was brought in to convince voters to approve the Death Star. Parcells smartly had control of personnel written into his contract. Parcells made Jerry "uncomfortable" and bounced when Jones saddled TO on him.

Wade Phillips was a reaction to Parcells. A nice guy who would never ever make Jerry uncomfortable. Great defensive coordinator, nothing head coach.

Jason Garrett was a dream, an idea. He was well-spoken, a former quarterback, and Ivy League-educated. The Garrett family had deep ties to the Jones' family. No business being named the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, at least not at that point in his career. People talk about his 1-2 playoff record should also factor in that he lost three straight week 17 elimination games as well. I understand the appeal of Garrett but his supporters need to come to reality on the results.

We're due another highly-respected coach with enough clout to get personnel written into his contract. This franchise does not fear consequences because the head football guy just pats them on the butt and tells them they'll get 'em next time.

Coach Killer? Other than Jimmy and Bill his HC hires were unqualified to be HCs.

Jerry kinda is and isn't, he has a tendency to hire yes men that don't have the right stuff to be a good coach in the NFL. Sean Payton and Mike Zimmer could've been exceptions but Jerrah either drove them off or didn't want them to run the show.
When Payton left..

he was a Parcells guy and we had Parcells already.

When Zimmer left..we had Parcells as a defensive HC who was scraping the 4-3 for the 3-4 which was a complete failure.

Hate to revise your post but it's a tad fuzzy.

I see alot of sense in your post..

but like everything in life..

nothing is black and white..

It's a Whiter Shade of Pale.

Put on your headphones.
