I'm happy as can be that the Titans beat the Giants...

But I feel bad for Mathias Kiwanuka for that 4th down play when he let Young go.

Why?

It's absolutely clear that he believed that Young had thrown the ball, and the last thing he wanted was to get flagged for "roughing the passer" on 4th down if he drove Young to the ground.

This is the second time this season that I've seen a defender let up on a QB, mistakenly thinking the ball had been thrown.

And it's all a product of the "wussification" (is that better WG?) of the roughing rules that allow a QB to draw a penalty if they're sneezed on.

In this case, it absolutely cost the Giants the game.

You can say it's Kiwi's fault for letting him go, but if Young had thrown the ball and he tackled him, it's 100% certain that would have drawn a flag.

if you're in the process of taking down the QB, and then he gets rid of the ball, then the play is legal

just not after he releases, can you tackle him

that was all on Mathias

We're on the same page here. Getting too soft with these lame rules.

He should have just upended his *** onto the turf, it's not like he was head to head with him.

actually, I agree. the roughing the passer penalties have been terrible this year--there's typically one in each game, every week.

Kiwi should've just hit him and lived with the result--but I do believe that the league's pussification (great name by the way) rules are negatively altering the way people play.

Mathias is the only player I've seen allow the rules to affect his play

I agree though that the league is too soft, but I don't think it had that much bearing on the play

That's why I shake my head when people claim some of today's QBs are the best "ever" because of their numbers they are putting up. It was a different game back in the day when QBs and WRs had to fear for their lives with every passing play.

He should have bear hugged him until he HEARD A WHISTLE.

The 1st thing we learn in pop-warner football is to play until the whistle is blown.

He let up before hearing it... protection of the QB rules or not you play till the whistle.

No excuse.

It was 4th down. If he doesn't let up, the game is over.

No effect?

The exact same play happened in the Steelers/Browns game and probably cost the Browns the win.

It's all fun and games when it's happening to other teams, but mark my words, it won't be so funny when Dallas comes out on the losing end of one of these plays and they will if the current "pussification" continues, it's only a matter of time.

The officials seem to protect the QBs at all cost, even if it hurts the integrity of the game. Carolina had an INT called back today on a roughing the passer that I didn't understand unless hitting the QB really hard is now a foul. Come to think of it, hitting a QB really hard does seem to be a foul.

If they want QBs to play flag football, fine, bring back the abomination that was "in the grasp". At least that's "fair" to the defensive player also.

no single player can be totally blamed for a loss, you could also say manning lost it with his INT

I'm telling ya, the pass rushers of today can't win for losing. Even two HOF QBs Troy Aikman & Steve Young have been taking up their cause all year. They say they just can't win. Hit 'em high, you get flagged. Hit 'em low, you get flagged. Hit 'em too hard, you get flagged. Like Jack Lambert use to say, "Might as well put a dress on 'em."....referring to how pampered QBs are out on the field.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong here. Go watch the play again. He turned around looking for whatever receiver may have had the ball. It had complete and total bearing on the play.

it was just a dumb play on Mathias' part, you can tell if the QB still has the ball or not
