The lack of pressure is disturbing

Rob Ryan attempted to do that... And where did that get the Cowboys other than a lot of confused looks, finger-pointing and busted coverages on defense.

Buffalo went through the same thing last season with his brother-- yeah you create "confusion" for the other team's QB, but in the process your own players get confused.

For the last several years several high picks have been spent on the OL, RB and WR... Namely the offense... And the defensive line has been a
"patch job".

Finally the DT position looks to be in better shape than it has in several seasons.

It will take at least another offseason to fix the DE spot.

It doesn't have to be a Ryan brother..

Disguising coverages and bringing heat works.

This is like Garrett trying to stick to basic game plans when he is outmanned.

Give me smoke and mirrors over just lining up and getting chipped apart.

i don't think this FO puts much emphasis on defense (particularly the d-line) as seen through their drafting and free agency activity (or lack thereof). Either that or the talent evaluation is abysmal, and I would argue it's a bit of both.

I also think the overall strategy for this season was to DOMINATE TOP (time of possession) and keep the defense off the field, but in light of recent events I'm not sure that strategy is altered much.. at least not until we see how Dak does in game 1

tl;dr we don't care much about our defense (or we suck miserably at evaluating talent) and put all of our stock into the offense to keep the defense off the field
The strategy of over-investing on offense seems like a good one now that they have a rookie QB. Dak has the highest probablility of succeeding with a super talented OL, RB, WR and TE.

It's just like 2014. The Offense is going to have to score a lot and I think it will. The defense is what it is. I don't know who they can get from other teams roster cuts that will make a difference at this point

They need to look at defensive cuts from teams like the Rams, Steelers, Seahawks, and NE. Although with our coaching I don't know if it would help.....

The Eagles had one of the best ever D-Coordinators that used a blitzing type scheme.

The result was some great plays by those defenses, But the Eagles didn't win the Super Bowl and didn't really dominate the division for any sustained period of time.

They ran a lot of corner blitzes in the game, as well as just rushing 4. Even with Demarcus Lawrence and Mayowa out there, the pass rush was non-existent. I think it's finally time to hit the panic button here. Shaniel Jenkins came off the street and was an instant upgrade, and he is gone. I don't have any faith in Mawoya, Russell, Irving, or any of these other scrubs to generate any pressure.

this will be our downfall, if we fall, not Dak.

Guess who actually looked decent?

Kyle Wilber as a RDE....just saying he is probably our nickle designated 3rd down RDE:rolleyes:

As for our base D....

LDE is probably Irvin
RDE is probably Mawoya

They were ok....I worry about Mawoya being a little too light to w/stand being a run stuffing/able to keep containment guy.

But he is active.

Wouldn't shock me to see Mawoya fill in for D-law the first 4 games on the left side as a situational rusher...and Jack Crawford is your starting RDE on the 1st 2 downs.

Over a period of 6 years, from 2001 to 2006, they won the division 5 times. 4 NFC Title games over that period.

Not perfect, but sure as hell better than what we've experienced recently.

Maybe it's just me but I suspect there is a happy medium between a Ryan defense confusing yourself and Marinelli just sitting back conservatively and letting teams pick them apart.

I suspect it's as much a lack of talent at DE than anything else.

Come on.. The Eagles were really good.

If we had their defense we would be hands down the favorite to win the Super Bowl with Romo.

Of course.

And it's up to Marinelli to figure out a way to generate pressure since he doesn't have the DEs. That's what he's getting paid for and I suspect that's what people are suggesting in this thread.

Regardless of your feelings, they (the Cowboys) aren't going to change.

The defense is going to try to avoid giving up the big play and will force offenses to march down the field.

I think it's far easier to post about than it is to accomplish.

If it were that easy the sad-sack pass rushes around the NFL would have sorted it out a long time ago.

It's not easy. No one said it was. But when the team has had pass rush problems for 3 seasons and still doesn't have the DEs to do what Marinelli wants, it's maybe time for Marinelli to try something else, mix it up a bit.

I understand the point...

But the guy has been in the league a zillion years and he's had some success doing it his way.

Like it or not he suddenly isn't going to throw caution to the wind and become blitz happy.

Heck, I'd be pleased if the corners would simply play up on their man more often so not to give up the easy 5 yard-out.

Who is going to trade a defensive end that can rush the passer though? Why would a team not want a guy who can do that? Mingo was probably the best bet but we all know there is no way marinelli is going to say yes to a guy like that.

Maybe a team Like Denver, that is stacked defensively but shallow on the OL.
Probably the only team capable of making a Leary trade consider worthy.

At this juncture, it does appear we'll be left hoping some of our youngsters manage to bloom during the season.

However, it's not beyond any remote possibility for a capable DE to be had off waivers, once the cuts are made.
