The league has to do something about roughing the passer

Understood. it's definitely all about money. but they're really putting the defensive players in an impossible position if this continues. It's like they made this new rule without even consulting a former defensive player. Or maybe they did and chose not to pay him any mind.
The defensive players benefit from the additional money as well. What can they say "I don't care about the money I want to be able to smash the QB as hard as humanly possible!"

Jones did have his weight on Carr last night and that is listed as a no-no.

Every rule should have context though and the refs should exercise discretion. There was no other way for Jones & Carr to go down. Just as important, the ball was out and you could even argue that Jones had possession while both players were still on their feet. He also did try to break his fall with his left hand.

It was a fantastic, game altering play that was made into a penalty by the pharisees of the NFL.

After Grady Jarrett's bad call on Brady, the Chris Jones penalty was a real stretch too.

I bring this up here given that as one of the better pass rushes in the NFL, we are going to hit the QB a lot. There likely isn't a solution this year but maybe in the offseason they need to look at replay for roughing the passer calls.

This isn’t a new problem.

Ridiculous, game altering personal foul calls have been a staple of NFL games for years now. I guess it’s just recently happened to rub the right people the wrong way to get more attention now.

How many of y'all were 100% convinced that you would see the YELLOW flag symbol on the TV screen Sunday after every big Cowboy play....I've grown so used to it....and guarded....that its impossible to immediately get excited.
I wish ESPN would stop using the yellow bar at the bottom to indicate they have some sort of update. Always makes it seem like there was a flag on the play.

This is the only rule in the book that states when in doubt, call the roughing penalty and it is not reviewable and isn’t likely to change.

if I am an owner, I am not changing it either. They do not care about the game; they care about their franchise.

And they care about their star QB who they have hundreds of millions invested . We’d want our investment protected too.

Replay the way to go.Better to over call to keep QB safe but also correct mistakes with replay.

Some fans want the NFL to be an X-box gladiator sport. The violence our youth is already exposed to is most likely a greater contributor to some of our societal issues than most want to admit.

You can protect the QB (actually all players) without creating an unfair advantage though. Destroying the integrity of competition serves no one's best interest.

Does anyone else find it funny how there are protracted and passionate debates from players, fans and press for days about concussion protection and immediately after there are protracted and passionate debates from players, fans and press about not allowing the defense to play defense

Its like a split personality

It’s not an unfair advantage if it applies to all QB’s and teams .

We have a nearby park in our neighborhood which I occasionally walk by on my morning walks . On Saturdays the kids are out playing ball. This time of year it’s football .

And you no longer see these young kids who are probably 6-10 years old in pads and helmets. It’s all flag football. That’s the future of the game IMO.

It serves the owners’ best interest and will not change.

They have modified the game to serve their own interests.

I am not saying it is right or wrong but Jones has to learn that you can not just run and smash directly into the QB. You gotta learn to hit them and not land directly on top of them. The responsibility lies with the defender. In all honesty it is pretty simple and straight forward. Again I am not saying it is right or wrong I am just pointing out the reality.

I doubt anyone disputes it is all about money. Most things are. What I am saying is for the league to make money the game has to be viable as a competitive sport too. And if defenders are not allowed to defend freely, what is the point of giving big contracts to defensive players? If you are an owner, are you giving out $100 million to defenders who you know will have 2 hands tied behind his back? They will become impotent as far as stopping the offence. Then the sport is no longer watchable. Now that is a long way off still. But the league needs to be careful about how far it goes.

And if I'm playing QB, I make sure my head hits the ground after every hit. 1st down every time. EVERY time. They have to make it reviewable.
