The league has to do something about roughing the passer

Note: A player who initiates contact against a passer is responsible for avoiding an illegal act.

A standard of strict liability applies for any contact against a passer, irrespective of any acts by the passer,
such as ducking his head or curling up his body in anticipation of contact.

Notes: (1) When in doubt about a roughness call or potentially dangerous tactic against the passer, the Referee should always call roughing the passer

I am more worried that Parsons and Lawrence voiced their displeasure. You just know the officials will be looking extra closely at them Sunday night.

Hope they do because Parson pointed out how he is being held and he is. Let the refs watch them closely,

The mistake the NFL is making is the belief that the most important part of the game is the QB. The most important thing in the game is the fans. The game has to pass their eye test. And the fans are not happy with how this is being called. I would also be all for unsportsmanlike penalties being called on the whiny little ***** QBs like Brady who complain every game when things do not go their way.

And the officials need to be held accountable for their mistakes and it needs to be done publicly so that the fans know that there is a standard that needs to be met every game. Especially in a sport with so few games in a season and each outcome is crucial.

The large majority of eyes are on the QB and then the skill players because of the fantasy football factor. They are watching players more than teams.

The owners know the interest is in Allen, Brady, Mahomes, Rodgers, Jackson, Herbert and even Murray as opposed to watching the Cards play.

The lessons are not lost on them when Bird and Johnson saved the ratings of the NBA and the interest created by the QB class of Elway, Marino and Kelly.

The owners want the pass rushers to think twice about the hit they're about to put on their star attraction. They are not going to alter the rules at all. Even if they make it reviewable, what do you think they're going to tell the refs to do upon review? They already told them to throw the flag when in doubt.

Rail against the tides of change all we want, it is their game and they control those who officiate it for them.

After Grady Jarrett's bad call on Brady, the Chris Jones penalty was a real stretch too.

I bring this up here given that as one of the better pass rushes in the NFL, we are going to hit the QB a lot. There likely isn't a solution this year but maybe in the offseason they need to look at replay for roughing the passer calls.

I would be fine with roughing the passer as is if they can get rid of the total joke calls that we see to often like the Jarret and Jones penalties this weekend. Those were hideous penalties and it is shocking that the refs called them as even under the current rules they would not qualify as roughing.

I see this more as a quality of enforcement problem which the NFL has always struggled with. The quality of officiating is just relatively low compared to other pro leagues which is unfortunate.

Also, the new roughing the passer rules were meant to prevent QB injury so I would like to see an analysis related to whether or not there has actually been a decline in QB injury rates since the new rules went into place. If there is no proof that it helps keep signal callers on the field, scrap the rule.

How many of y'all were 100% convinced that you would see the YELLOW flag symbol on the TV screen Sunday after every big Cowboy play....I've grown so used to it....and guarded....that its impossible to immediately get excited.
No doubt. On the Pollard 54 yard TD run, I waited a bit to see the yellow "Flag" box on the screen, but it never came.

Hard to get excited for big plays when so many have been called back by the refs the past 2+ years.

They should do an automatic booth review of those.
- It's often a double penalty because it usually overturns a good defensive play and gives the defense a penalty.
- It would be one of the easiest types of plays to review.

My preference would be to have an automatic review of any big play that is overturned by a penalty.
- Over the years, Tony Pollard might lead the league in big plays that were overturned by a penalty.
- Probably half of those were penalties on La'el Collins...

The problem is that 98% of those are infractions and even the guys doing the games call that out.

The truth is if they call all of the infractions, the game is dead and no one is going to try and watch the sport. Just the OPI calls against the picks would make it unwatchable. I see them on almost every pass play and they just started enforcing the illegal man downfield, another offense committed very often.

Every official is reviewed to see who gets to work in Jan-Feb and the non-calls carry as much weight when they're out in the open. Blockers need to keep their hands inside the pads and stop making holding so easy to call.

One thing people need to do is pay close attention to the color analysts calling out the culprit before the ref reveals it and just how many times they're correct. Their spotters can see that so it stands to reason, it's easy for the ref to see it.

It’s one of those rules that allow refs to make “judgement” calls that can alter the out come of games. Not saying they are doing it intentionally. But wait till we have a game on the line and we sack the QB legally and they decide to call roughing and give them a new set of downs and the 15 yards gets them in fg range and we lose because of it. I cringe when the game is close and we get a sack. We benefited on 2 PI calls a game or so ago when Rush threw 2 picks called back. One could have been considered ticky tack.

If the defender does not touch the QB's helmet, then it should not be a penalty unless it is clearly a late hit.

Flowers had one called on him in the Rams game, was a total BS call. No helmet to helmet and no slamming Stafford to the ground, he pulled up from taking the big shot on Stafford yet the flag came out and roughing called

he even pulled up short. nuts

Jones did have his weight on Carr last night and that is listed as a no-no. That's what put Romo out one season.

Jarrett's was ridiculous, that's tackle football.

However, the money is in the QB's and the owners are changing nothing. The officials are acting at their behest in enforcing this protect the franchise rule.

If you've watched how the promoting has changed, this is no longer about teams facing off. Did you catch those graphics last night with Mahomes instead of the team? It was all about the QB, not the team. It's the same with Allen, Herbert, Rodgers and the reason DEN gave up the farm for Wilson and CLE did for Watson.

They have made the game all about the QB and they're not about to let the golden goose get hammered. 20-25% of the cap is going to that one player.

jones braced with his left arm to prevent his full weight from falling on carr. and that was all the while fighting for and recovering the ball

The Chris Jones penalty was close as defined by the rule. The defender can't come down with full body weight on the QB. Ok fine. But, the Brady sack call was absurd. I don't know how the NFL expects defenders to tackle the QB. I honestly think in 5 years, QBs will have flags around their waist.

Yep

Our Star QB’s of the league is already a diminishing list. The NFL and owners are going to protect its greatest asset. Some of which are exceeding a 1/2 billion.

A couple bad calls a week on their QB’s isn’t much of a sacrifice on the game to protect their investments.

There are discrepancies from officiating crew to crew. They all have different ways and tendencies. The biggest issue is the severe lack of consistency. And, too many judgement calls.
