The league has to do something about roughing the passer

Since they can't hit him high or low, fall on him or take him to the ground, they need to return to the quick call "in the grasp" to give the D a chance.

And then watch the QBs and OCs complain. Oh, I could have gotten the ball off! LOL.

jones braced with his left arm to prevent his full weight from falling on carr. and that was all the while fighting for and recovering the ball
He tried to prevent his weight from coming down but did he? Not from what I saw.

However, was Carr still the passer once Jones took the ball away from him?

For them to admit that this is the only rule in the book that if there is a doubt, the ref is to call it anyway pretty much tells me their intentions in this. They are not paying a QB 40-50M a year without some additional protection in place during the games. And that is not changing.

yeah seeing that line from the rule book actually spell it out makes sense. i still think that was a pretty weak call though. and yes, him putting his arm down prevented his "full weight" which has been what is supposed to be protected from. oh well

You're running full speed at 100% aggression to get around or thru another 300 lb OL, then in a matter of .5 second you want them to delicately lay the QB down with a fluffy pillow? Please.
No one said it would be easy. All I am saying is this is to protect the money and the players are getting half that money. I would expect them to want to be a part of protecting the money.

Don't even look like you will land on the QB and the rest well there isn't much you can do vs the bogus calls. With so much guaranteed salary the owners will keep the rules in place that favor protection for the QB's.

After Grady Jarrett's bad call on Brady, the Chris Jones penalty was a real stretch too.

I bring this up here given that as one of the better pass rushes in the NFL, we are going to hit the QB a lot. There likely isn't a solution this year but maybe in the offseason they need to look at replay for roughing the passer calls.

I knew when the Tua thing happened there would be an over reaction by the league
They blew it on Tua and now over react to the point it’s a detriment to the game
I’m all for player protection rules but many of these aren’t even close to being penalties under the rules

The one on Jones was a joke. If you can’t do that then you can’t tackle the QB. It was a horrible call just like the one on Brady.

Here is what the rulebook says:

ARTICLE 11. ROUGHING THE PASSER

(b) A rushing defender is prohibited from committing such intimidating and punishing acts as “stuffing” a passer into the ground or unnecessarily wrestling or driving him down after the passer has thrown the ball, even if the rusher makes his initial contact with the passer within the one-step limitation provided for in (a) above. When tackling a passer who is in a defenseless posture (e.g., during or just after throwing a pass), a defensive player must not unnecessarily or violently throw him down or land on top of him with all or most of the defender’s weight. Instead, the defensive player must strive to fall to the side of the quarterback’s body, or to brace his fall with his arms to avoid landing on the quarterback with all or most of his body weight

This section explain both penalties. The question is, did Jones land on Carr with all or most of his body weight? I think the answer is yes. And, I heard Dean Blandino, who was on the radio earlier today, say that the fact that Carr fumbled does not negate the rougher the passer penalty.

The point is, it is the rule, and it is subjective. Like I said, they called the same penalty on Gregory I think last season and he is a gnat compared to Jones.

I think most fans realize in todays game you have to protect the players
I’m all for rules meant to make the game safer
But some of these roughing calls are just ridiculous
And it all comes from the Tua thing that the league blew. They have tgg by e ability to stop a player from coming back and didn’t

Understood. it's definitely all about money. but they're really putting the defensive players in an impossible position if this continues. It's like they made this new rule without even consulting a former defensive player. Or maybe they did and chose not to pay him any mind.

Just put a pink jersey on the QB and forbid tackling him ( or her) altogether.

They finally got the DPI call right. It was frustrating to watch for a while.

The league has done something, they've chosen to throw flags if you just hit a QB too hard regardless of where you hit them.

You get a flag if a finger grazes a QB's helmet.

It's at the point where you may as well just blast the QB, because you're going to get flagged anyway.

Flowers had one called on him in the Rams game, was a total BS call. No helmet to helmet and no slamming Stafford to the ground, he pulled up from taking the big shot on Stafford yet the flag came out and roughing called

that was with time left for them to score. that legit was a clear attempt to change the outcome of a game

Jones did have his weight on Carr last night and that is listed as a no-no. That's what put Romo out one season.

Jarrett's was ridiculous, that's tackle football.

However, the money is in the QB's and the owners are changing nothing. The officials are acting at their behest in enforcing this protect the franchise rule.

If you've watched how the promoting has changed, this is no longer about teams facing off. Did you catch those graphics last night with Mahomes instead of the team? It was all about the QB, not the team. It's the same with Allen, Herbert, Rodgers and the reason DEN gave up the farm for Wilson and CLE did for Watson.

They have made the game all about the QB and they're not about to let the golden goose get hammered. 20-25% of the cap is going to that one player.
I disagree on the Jones strip sack. He clearly has the ball. The turnover had already happened. 2nd point is he stuck out his left arm to avoid his full weight on the QB even though that rule doesn't apply after a turnover. Horrible call in multiple ways.

NFL teams practice without hitting their QB’s as they wear Red jerseys .

Maybe the NFL could do the same in games . And if you touch the QB he’s down . And don’t allow the Qb to run beyond the LOS.

If he scrambles outside the pocket he must slide down before he reaches LOS. Or the ball will be spotted at the LOS if he scrambles beyond .
