The lost optimism of keeping or firing Garrett

What I have always found funny about "Fire <insert-current-head-coach-here>!" threads over the years for every single coach we have had since Jimmy Johnson is that in one breath, fans will loudly rail against Jerry Jones' ability to make good decisions pointing to <insert-current-head-coach-here> as the prime example, and then in the next breath expect that same Jerry Jones would be capable of hiring the perfect coach to replace him.

What if Jerry fired Garrett and then hired Linehan or Marinelli? They both have previous head coaching experience. What if Jerry hired some unproven coordinator from another team that may only have had success because he had several superstar players to work with on his last team?

Like many fans, I have seen nothing from Garrett to prove he's capable of reaching or winning Super Bowls so this is not a "keep Garrett" agenda post. I believe coaches are paid a lot of money to win and if they don't, they should get fired and replaced.

I just don't share the same optimism that I guess many of you do that if Garrett is fired, everything will suddenly be better. Instead, I fear that if he's fired, we'll get some replacement that "can work and get a long with Jerry" and at minimum we'll have to endure at least 3-4 more years of mediocrity, or even worse, wishing we still had Garrett "because at least he had one good season".

It's easy to say, "it can't get much worse", but to that I simply say one word .. "Campo."

there's no optimism in what jerry would do, just that garrett sucks and rather try with someone else if there's even a modicum of hope the results would be different.

I think there is a reason that every single coach since Switzer (who had a team I could win a Super Bowl with) has failed. We simply don't field a talented enough team. Until we find a coach who can make chicken salad out of chicken **** we're going to get the same results until we start getting better players.

Our defensive front 7 appears to have 1 very (if injury prone) guy and a bunch of jags. When we have a DL we'll suddenly find that we have better coaching IMO.

On offense we've got everything except we've been forced to start a rookie QB. That's a huge problem.

Coaching only goes so far, when the other team has better players than you they'll generally win. Switzer should be the ultimate proof of that.

Campo's problem was no QB, no draft picks and a cap mess. I have absolutely no doubt in my mind that Campo would at least have the same record with this team over the last 7 years as Garrett, and perhaps better. Campo was not a real bad coach, he had no talent, no cap space and no QB.

If it wasn't for Romo we wouldn't even be mediocre so I think he's the main reason we have been competitive. We had no franchise QB when Campo was here. If we don't get a franchise QB going forward it will be the Campo Years again no matter if Garrett is here or not.

You're right Reality. But like the old saying goes, you don't know know if you don't try. We've had JG for years. 5.5 years as coach, and what 3 as the OC? The offense is stale and has been like that for years. Romo has always covered up for its shortcomings. It's blatantly obvious JG doesn't care a thing about defense as well. It's time. I think the whole "have the same HC for 20 years" days are done in the NFL. This thing needs a shake up, and if it's a retread OC, or whomever it can't get any worse then 8-8. And if it does, at least we can get some good players out of it hopefully!

This is perhaps the most cynical and negative post I may have read on this site.

The suggestion that we should retain a coach that in six seasons has done nothing "to prove he's capable of reaching or winning Super Bowls" simply because the the GM might hire a worse candidate is beyond hopeless.

But it might just be that bad. I say we fire Garrett and find out.

That's been my argument for a long time. We say, "Garrett has to go," but then think that the guy who hired him will hire someone not only better, but significantly better, and then get out of the way and let him do his job. The whole "it couldn't be any worse" is flawed in two ways. One, it could always be worse. Two, we don't want "couldn't be worse." We want better - much better. The only name out there that would excite me would be Sean Payton, although he's been involved in a couple of major scandals, and I doubt he'd ever come here as long as Jerry is in charge. I'm not trying to defend Garrett. I think he's limited as a coach by his own apprehensions and stubbornness, but I also think he's limited by his boss - the same boss that we expect to go out and hire another Jimmy Johnson.

I never said we should keep Garrett. Obviously you did not read my post. I am completely ambivalent as to whether Garrett is fired or kept. That's my point. Optimism seems lost whether we keep or fire him.

As for my post being "the most cynical and negative post I may have read on this site" .. are you new here? :D

You can't keep a coach who does well in school but usually fails the midterm and final exams. I(Garrett) am a good student but just can't pass the course.....

I wanted Sean Payton as our head coach back when he was an assistant here. In fact, I was the only one pushing for it back then and that was long before he went to the Saints and had success. Sean just got a new contract extension though so I doubt he's going anywhere.

The same threads occur in 28 other NFL cities all day long.

Fans are inherently expert play callers, talent evaluators, and general managers.

Seahawks fans hate their offensive coordinator and they make the playoffs every year. It's definitely not exclusive to us or losing teams.

I'll go with the ole every blind squirrel theory. And just hope and pray JJ get's lucky. The only way JG would get another head coaches gig is if the hiring owner really thought Jones held him back.
