We need a new scheme in here. This Tampa 2 and bend but don't break stuff is outdated. At the least, it doesn't fit the personnel on hand.

I like Marinelli's ability to motivate. But know what I would like more? Better players that don't need to be convinced they're better than they are.

I think this should be his last season. If he was willing to take a demotion to a DL coach then sure but after 4 years of poor coverage in the middle of the field, I feel that it is time to find someone that can coordinate an entire defense and not just the front 4.

I reserve the right to change my mind and feel that he should finish the season but I cannot be the only one who feels this way.

I'm not even sure about the "finish the season' part.

I might give Eberflus his shot now to find out about him.

I still don't get why Rob Ryan got the axe after 2 years but Marinelli is in his 4th season. Both of their defenses were garbage. I get the 2 playoff appearances usually means the staff stays together but the defense was always the unit that made us fail at the end. Something has to give. Get someone else in here. This soft zone defense is frustrating to watch. We made Goff and Simien look like HOF QBs.

He got the axe because he was lazy and barely showed for meetings, leaving Eberflus (who also can go away) to run shiz-nozz.
And his D was constantly confused, leaving 10 men on the field and not getting into formation until too late.

Rod preaches turnovers too. We just never get them. Almost on a record setting pace in fact.
To me that is the most frustrating thing about this defense the last few seasons.

We give but don’t take.

Brent Venables from Clemson is probably the biggest DC in college right now.

There are some other interesting names such as Mike Elko at Notre Dame. He made Wake Forest into a pretty solid defense that could force turnovers and he's completely turned around the Notre Dame defense in one offseason. He preaches the importance of turnovers. ND had 14 turnovers in the entire 2016 season and they now have 14 after 5 games.

OU was glad to see Venables go. I think his success is talent more than scheme.

Serious question...
if Jerry was willing to make a big (and smart) shakeup and fire Rod...who would take his place to finish the season? Who do we have in house who would likely take over?

(Although I can't imagine it would be difficult to find someone to just tell guys to "find a place and get after it" which seems to be the extent of his "coordination". I'm pretty sure his headset isn't actually plugged in)

Second part...at the end of the season who would you really want?

Steal Kris Richard, maybe he can straighten out this mess. BTW I bet Wade would come back under the right circumstance.

Rod can teach technique...it's his scheme that is junk. Last season...he went away from what he liked...and we had some success. This off season Rod insisted in doing it his way...w/ his players....and now look. With that being said...I think you can firmly say where the problem lies.

i am hoping that the youth of the defense is causing marinelli to build a plan slowly
its a long season, we need to make the playoffs and then by then hopefully the defense can mature and become more complicated
fingers crossed

1) Scandrick is a slot corner, not an outside corner
2) the rest are rookies (which take 3 years to get up to speed), a one year guy coming off injury, and a guy who just got cut. no veteran presence in our scheme. 0%
3) heath is a backup, and jones is solid, but not great, and certainly can't make up for the inefficiencies of rookie corners.
4) injuries, and talent level kill us at LB, which also effects the corners, safeties. hard to focus on turnovers, and coverage when you're almost certain to be the guy tackling a runner. (See Green Bay Game)
5) Suspensions, injury to the line, and we need a strong run stopper in the middle.
6) who's smart enough to actually run the defense on the field when Lee goes down? Hitchens? Scandrick?

Summary is, you can cover a turd in glitter, but it will still smell like ****. We still have some holes to fill. It may get a little better as the year goes on, it may not. Depends on how the young guys develop. I don't like Marinelli's scheme at all, but I can't sit back, and blame him for the defense entirely. He's working with Totinos, not Tombstone.
