I still don't get why Rob Ryan got the axe after 2 years but Marinelli is in his 4th season. Both of their defenses were garbage. I get the 2 playoff appearances usually means the staff stays together but the defense was always the unit that made us fail at the end. Something has to give. Get someone else in here. This soft zone defense is frustrating to watch. We made Goff and Simien look like HOF QBs.

We made Matt Flynn look like ARod. He came back and beat us while we were leading 26-3 at one point.

Serious question...
if Jerry was willing to make a big (and smart) shakeup and fire Rod...who would take his place to finish the season? Who do we have in house who would likely take over?

(Although I can't imagine it would be difficult to find someone to just tell guys to "find a place and get after it" which seems to be the extent of his "coordination". I'm pretty sure his headset isn't actually plugged in)


Second part...at the end of the season who would you really want?

On Monday, I was hoping to find that Rod and Jerry had agreed that Rod would step down as dc.
It would've been the perfect time to do it.
No such luck though.

The Deacon gimmick D says alot about Rod. He’s lost and it seems like desperate attempt to make the dreaded bend BUT don’t break philosophy work. It’s wont.

As @mahoneybill said players can’t make plays when they’re not in posistion to make plays.

This is year 5 with this turd of a scheme. A year under the walking dead in Kiffin and the rest with old senile.
Marinelli has overseen the acquisition of all defensive personnel except for
Tyrone Crawford (but he chose him as his 3t)
Sean lee(our best D player)
Orlando scandrick and
Kyle Wilbur.

So while he hasn't had top 5 picks thrust upon him he has actually been actively involved in moulding this defensive roster.
HE has failed
His scheme has failed
HE needs forcing into shady pines..

I think this should be his last season. If he was willing to take a demotion to a DL coach then sure but after 4 years of poor coverage in the middle of the field, I feel that it is time to find someone that can coordinate an entire defense and not just the front 4.

I reserve the right to change my mind and feel that he should finish the season but I cannot be the only one who feels this way.

But there is the fact he just signed a contract extension in March. That alone might keep him around another year.

Gimme an aggressive defense that will take some risks. I'd rather lose giving up 30 pts, giving up 500 yards, but maybe getting 1-2 big turnovers to still allow our offense to win the game. Either way, we will get torched playing this conservative Marinelli style but we won't come close to any turnovers.

It is not often a defense is bad enough to give up 500 yards is going to be one that grabs turnovers. If they are giving up 500 yards, then they simply can't play and the offense moving it on them is not going to take chances themselves to expose themselves to the turnover risk.

MArinelli always sucked, he is getting credit for Tony Dungy and Lane Kiffin defense. Marinelli has always been a DL coach, never a DC and the one time he got his HC chance he won 10 games and lost 38.

Xs and Os he is like a lot of long time NFL coaches. Good fundamentals, can make it look presentable if he changes jobs and in essence gets completely new personnel to work with.

As time goes on these kind of coaches wear out their welcome.

Look at Wade Phillips, ten times the coach Marinelli has ever been, yet even he has to hit the road after a couple of years.
