devin harris wouldn't have helped. he didnt help against CP3 in the regular season either.

devin harris is only really good against tony parker for some reason.

the defensive ROTATIONS are terrible. thats a matter of coaching. Avery just doesn't have the X's and O's.

we really miss del harris.

Said all along they should have kept Devin Harris.

Stupid to trade a young, promising PG for a PG that has maybe 2 years of high performance left.

At least they traded him to the East.

While I don't disagree with your assessment of the trade, Devin Harris was even worse against Paul and the Hornets than Kidd is - so I'm not sure how much of a difference it would make.

I had typed out Harris' stats in his two games vs the Hornets earlier this year, then my browser booted me out. So instead of retyping it all, here are the box scores:

12/1 - http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/boxscore;_ylt=AoqA0iq4wMq5BMEYLdbetKSLvLYF?gid=2007121406

i dont think avery is coming back next year, and frankly, i think that would probably be the best move at this point. they still have a lot of good players, they just arent responding

True, but at least Dallas won one of them. And only lost by 4 the second game. :(

Put Byron Scott as the coach of the Mavs and they would be title contenders, Avery Johnson simply can't coach...

I thought you advocated Avery staying?

I don't understand what happened. Avery made excellent adjustments in the '05 and '06 playoffs. They lost the first two games at home against the Rockets in '05 but became only the third team in NBA history to come back and win the series after dropping the first two at home. Then the next year they stormed through Memphis, squeaked by SA after bumping Harris into the starting lineup, then zoomed past Phoenix after another adjustment keeping Diop in the starting lineup.

Then it all fell apart.

Is it Avery, or the players... or both?

It would have been worse had they missed the playoffs this year. By making the playoffs, we keep next year's draft pick in case they blow up the team in the offseason and they make the lottery.

Worst case scenario we can send Kidd away to a team trying to clear cap space.

Uh... a LOT of cap space.

its not that i think avery is a bad coach, i just dont think they really listen to him anymore. It would be the fastest way to fix the mavs without blowing up the entire team. I still think avery is a good coach he just doesnt really fit in with the mavs anymore.

Who would we replace him with? The only big names are Jeff Van Gundy, who seems very comfortable as a TV analyst, and Larry Brown.

If you consider Avery a control-freak, Brown would be like jumping out of the frying pan... and into the lava pit.

well, to be honest with you i dont think this team can do anything the way it is built right now. There isnt much they can get in the draft where they are picking and blowing up the team would take years of rebuilding to make them contenders again. Its just the quickest fix to the problem, getting a different face in there that maybe the team will respond to. i dont necessarily think it should be a big name. I just dont think the players there are responding to avery very well.

the thing that happened is that Del Harris isn't there as an assistant this year.

i also feel theres a problem with the players - eddie jones, juwan howard, devean george, josh howard (he's only good in the 1st quarter), stackhouse (only shows up 1/5 games).

really, the only players i actually LIKE anymore are Dirk and Bass. i'm meh on jet and damp.

i just want to blow the entire thing up and start over. thats probably not possible this season. we just have to wait until we get our draft picks and a couple of big contracts come off the books.

it's going to have to get worse before it gets better.

Dirk is soft, the Mavs will never get anywhere if he's the cornerstone of the team.

Only 7 footer I know that can be guarded by a guy a foot and a half shorter than he is and still take a fade away jumper.

Avery is a good coach, but he can't be the field general and he doesn't have anyone that's willing to take that role. It should be Kidd, but it's hard to be a leader when you're still new to the team and getting torched every game.

As far as being consistent, those are currently the only two players on the team who can 1) create their own shot or 2) score points in the paint. When Dirk, Kidd, Damp, Josh, and Stack are on the court, you only have three guys who can score and two of them stand around when the other has the ball.

In Kidd's defense, Chris Paul lights up every PG he goes against (with the possible exception of Deron Williams).

I'm not dissing any of the other great West PGs. Point is, Chris Paul dominates almost everybody these days, and is only getting better.

I wish the Mavs could acquire a 1 or 2-guard who would consistently drive to the basket, create his own shot, and cause havoc on the other end of the floor. But that's not an easy task because teams don't give those players away.

Take a look at the top teams in the West - every one of them has a player (or two) that fits that description.

Harris was the closest thing we had to that.
