They stumbled upon a formula in 2014 that I think surprised even them. They turned to the run to relax Romo's back after a bad outing in the opener and lo and behold, they got on a roll and rode the wave. I also think that they realized a side effect of running the ball allowed Romo to take a step back and guide the games better.

This offseason after Murray was allowed to leave, something changed. Suddenly they thought a journeyman back like Lance Dunbar would be a weapon. They force fed him the ball in all of his games like he was some Reggie Bush-lite in Linehan's offense, much like how his last offense with the Lions was.

That was the design for the season, I am firmly convinced of that. We were going to go RBBC with Dunbar as a wildcard. We saw in the first game, it was like any other year, like 2014 never happened. Romo was left to save the day.

I think they decided to go back to the old ways of doing things when they let Murray walk and didn't upgrade the RB.

Change is needed in this team in a big bad way. Garrett would be a good coach if he has the ability to make the proper changes to win games. Thats the problem here. If we want immediate change without having to dump Garrett then its all up to him. He should dump the playbook. Get rid of it and go with what got us in the playoffs lastyear.

Don't they have a copy of Callahan's playbook lying around? I frankly, think that we messed up by not resigning Callahan. I also think this started when they let Murray leave so easily. Last years team was a close knit group and felt like it was family. We are no longer that team and it started for letting Murray leave so easily and everything went downhill from then on.

Thus this is the fault of the FO. It could have been avoided if they just took the necessary steps to keep this team intact. But they didn't. Thus the team is unraveling before our eyes.

I didn't have a problem at the time letting Murray go for that money and I still don't. The problem is they were happy with their inner fallback guys and they Could not be trusted (besides D-Mac who is now wearing down) that's where I have the problem. With this team and its blueprint for success last year a RB should have been drafted in the 3rd round, not Chaz Green. Tevin Coleman would look pretty good in a Dallas uniform right now.

I just clicked on this thread and there it was. First true reply and what a great one it was.
I let out a loud laugh and then snorted a snort that would have made Jennifer Aniston proud.

Kudos.

Totally agree...I would have traded up to get Coleman. He was one back wished they traded for. Instead they messed up by going with the scrubs we had.

It is not the playbook per se. It is the offensive design, down to the concept level. Some passing games have designed throws, scripted upon combinations that flip coverages to get the desired result. It just seems that too often we look for our receivers to beat their assigned man via option routes to present opportunities, which is why you keep hearing about execution. I would really like to hear Garrett explain how his design differs from the Coryell offense because it seems basically the same.

Linehan and Garrett are basically from the same school of thought. The offense, even if Linehan could re-write the playbook would probably be the same. That's probably why he was brought in and Callahan demoted. Different viewpoints on how to design an offense.

Norv use to run a hell of a lay of play-action within the Coryell system here. He would actually leverage the running game for the passing game.

They keep talking about balance, but then they show themselves going pass when they are going pass. I've seen play action, the rarity it is used, with this offense on like third and long.. I just chuckle, because it's beyond frustration at this point.

What's the point about balance if the defense knows your tendencies? That's what Jerry talks about these days, besides TOs. What's the point of trying to use the run to open up your passing game if the defense knows your going to run or pass?

People keep talking about Norv, but the way he called games, by the time the opposing defense was in the late third quarter, they were simply exhausted and couldn't stop Emmitt. Aikman kept drives alive the first half, especially through guys like Novacek. They didn't just run Emmitt like a blind bull.

This team can't sustain any drives and keep a defense off balance into the 4th. They keep handing the ball back to the other team based on predictability.

It befuddles my mind how we very rarely run play action in this offense.
