Parcells was just a tease. It wasn’t as close as some want to think.
And hoping to return to the Jimmy type era is more like a pipe dream than any real possibility my friend.
I'd say way more than a pipe dream when he turned down a cream puff of a guy like Phillips just trying to raise the fines.
What does that even say about the GM's support of his HC? Coaches are evil necessities to Booger.
Even as whacked out as Crazy Al could get, he pretty much stayed out of his HC's way and let them do their job and he actually had a lot more experience to get involved but he understood the chain of command in any organization. Booger has a HC to be the boss when he's not around.
I can tell you first hand of that chain of command effect and it doesn't have to be involvement, presence will do it. When I was promoted to my first GM job from Sales Manager I promoted my top sales guy, which is usually the path. I let him run the meetings but I was there, thinking I was showing how important this was only I was sending the wrong signals, that of a question of confidence. I stopped going and the sales staff became his. And he could be accountable.
Booger not only doesn't support his coaches, he undermines them. Remember when Owens was calling the OC, Garrett, you remember him, out publicly? What was Booger's response? "I have no problem with that".
Booger runs the team just like he did his wildcatter company and he forgot all the lessons Frank Broyles, his admitted mentor, tried to teach him. He has no clue about the effect or importance of the chain of command remaining in place. One of the reasons he and Johnson connected so well with Switzer was because Broyles was loose reins with his coaches and Jimmy saw such a young coach with that kind of responsibility.
The first time I heard that DB we had for almost a season remark about team meetings being held up because the Joneses were running late, I didn't need to look for the root of the problem. Which is why I have very little optimism that this franchise accomplishes much on the field. It is flawed from the top down.
