CFZ The mystery of Jalen Tolbert

I’m curious if there’s been any report on why he’s in the dog house. Does he not work hard to improve? Not coachable? Usually the Cowboys play their rookie premium picks from rounds 1-3 no matter what.

There has to be a story behind this situation. Just haven’t heard anything.

Special Teams...4th/5th WRs will not always be active if they are not significant ST contributors.

He averaged about 30% on ST in the games he has been active.

For comparison, Kelvin Joseph averaged over 80% before becoming a starter. That includes last season. Joseph played 63% in his first ever game.

Not a bad pick, just more of a project than an Amari Cooper replacement.

Probably a round too early but it sure seemed like they had things scripted with players they knew would be there.

Normally not a good plan at all, but can’t argue with Smith and Williams thus far.

- This particular rookie year will be a bust for Tolbert - but that does not mean automatically he will be a bust for his career.
Like i said, he could dramatically improve and raise his game starting offseason to next summer's end.
But i'm not one for chancing bypassing a WR in the draft, for the sake of hoping Tolbert turns the corner.

- I'm just again pointing out that per his draft value, a lot more was expected of him as a contributor. ..not starter, but contributor, a portion.

- And " practice " does not near account for actual game day experience. You start out with practice - but live game day action is what you're gonna be counted on.
That is gonna be the bulk and most key to your development.

When winning or losing stakes are on.. ..., when the lights are on you,, the stomach butterflies are reeling, .t.what you do, or don't do accounts for your team's success ..or failure.
There's much more responsibility and pressure to perform on the field.

And we've experienced plenty of guys that have came thru here that just lit it up in Practice,..
but once the lights of actual game day - even preseason games came on,..they just dried up and blew away elsewhere.
Coaches want to see if you're a gamer against competition. ..

I agree with most of this, but practice is a huge developmental place. Think about Romo, the bulk of his development came on the scout team in practice. Other than preseason, he really didn’t touch the field until it was his job.

I expect something similar from Tolbert. Yes we wanted him to contribute earlier, but he could easily develop in practice and preseason and hit the ground running next season.

When Jalen Tolbert was drafted in the third round last spring, I didn’t expect 60 catches for 800 yds…but I also expected better than 2 receptions for 12 yards, and only being active for 8 of 13 games. Then at a critical moment in the packers loss, his senseless lining up offsides is still unbelievable…even for a rookie.

So what’s up with Tolbert? I know he’s green, but Michael Gallup was a 3rd round pick in 2018 and despite a learning curve, he still caught 33 passes for 507 yds and 2 TDs. Tolbert is barely getting on the field, much less catching passes.

This isn’t a 7th round long shot. Tolbert was drafted to play. That’s what the FO said the day he was drafted. In a year where the Cowboys haven’t been loaded at WR, Tolbert certainly had an opportunity.

So what gives? Any insight on the mystery of Jalen Tolbert?

Tolbert has made a few key blocks on big run plays.

He has done more than Jabril Cox but CZ loves Cox and hates Tolbert...

I never saw any stand out traits but just thought the WR scout team musta saw something I didn't.
Noah Brown was an extremely lengthy developmental WR project to wait out as well. I'm seeing another possible Noah Brown ceiling here unfortunately.

He could surprise next year, but then again, ya can't hit on every pick either I guess.

Yeah I don’t think it’s time to just give up on him. It’s too early to declare him a bust for sure. I was just wanting to know what anyone has heard about why he can’t even make the active roster some weeks.

No you usually don’t give up on a third round pick in year one. Maybe after two years.

He could still develop, but if not, well, draft misses happen. It's not like Tolbert was an out-of-nowhere pick; the consensus had him at least that high.

Draft expectations here are way out of whack with what actually happens. Every year, we get to the 6th round of the draft and people are saying, "we have to draft a [position] to replace [starter at that position]." After the first couple rounds, most draft picks bust.

If we looking at history most 3rd rounders at the wide receiver position tend to be lack luster picks. The tops are TO, Steve Smith, Antonio Freeman, and Nat Moore (WHO?)!!! There are only a handful to eclipse the 10K mark in WR unfortunately. This guy was clearly put in the wrong position he needed to be brought alone the very same way they brought Cedric Wilson along here in Dallas. If you not going first two rounds you can expect some shenanigans drafting a 3rd rounder because most don't come in with the I have been disrespected dawg disposition. Most 3rd round WR's are just thankful they were drafted and have that we made it mentality. He may be ok down the road but this not a team you have that luxury on because this team was in win now mode especially after the embarrasing exit last year. I honestly think Tolbert needs to learn the position and realize it takes more than athleticism to win at this level.
