The New Stadium-What Worked, What Can Be Done Better?

The story by the economist on how successful the new stadium has been in drawing revenue, made me think about this topic. Obviously the new stadium is impressive. I can see both sides of the argument concerning Jerry's
"ego" etc but no one can deny from architectual standpoint it is amazing.

Let's talk about the stadium and the experience at large. What do you think worked well with the new stadium? What didn't work as well as you would have liked? In other words, discuss your overall experience and your personal satifaction.

1) The seating was much more comfortable than Texas Stadium
2) The concessions are high but the food is very good
3) The sound system is amazing
4) The scoreboard is absoutley breath taking.

On the Downside

1) The roof was closed far too many times. Personally I wish retractable roof stadiums would keep the roof opened for all football games. I am a purist and prefer outdoor football. I can understand closing it for other events. I personally prefer over 100,000 fans with the roof open than 10-20,000 less for the roof to be closed.

2) I would like to see a true mascot at the stadium. We need someone to fire up the crowd like Rowdy Ray used to do.

3) Some type of tradition at the new stadium, whether it is a theme song, team chants, etc. I would like to see some type of tradition not seen at other NFL stadiums. I seriously wish teams would spend more time working on their piped in music, it sounds pretty much the same at all stadiums. I love the fact the Baltimore Ravens have a team band.

4) There still is too much of a laid back atmosphere at the new stadium. I have read and/or heard several excuses about how sound carries, etc. but let's stop making that excuse. There wasn't a lack of noise when they have held a college game at the stadium. There are some very loud stadiums in the NFL as well, but we don't seem to have one.

I think by the last game of the season, they had a lot of kinks worked out. The game experience was certainly much better as the season went on.

I personally have no preference regarding the roof. Not sure why people care about it. I do like the endzone doors open, though.

The stadium can be loud. It was extremely loud for the first Giants game, the Eagles game, and the playoff game. Several of the other games during the middle of the season were szoone-fests.

I think you meant Crazy Ray. If I ever see anything resembling Rowdy as the mascot for the Cowboys again, I'll have to get violent.:D

The video-board needs to be lowered so that more punters can hit it so that the media can write about how right they are about hte game.

Get errr done, Jerrah! :D

I was at the Playoff game, and while it was loud, it could have been much, much louder. I was truly amazed by the crowd. They are unique in their own regard. They spend so much time getting their refreshments and walking around socializing with people they probably see every day, that they don't even watch the game. I honestly felt like I was at a high school dance with these rich kiddos that were walking through the sections talking to their friends. It may as well be called social hour instead of a football game. Honestly.

Look at the bright side, Jeff Fisher and the Titans return to play in Dallas next season. I think it could get ugly if Jones and Fisher get into it over the videoboard.

My experience is very different than this.

Perhaps it may have been my part of the stadium. I was in the cheap seats. However, I've sat in the cheap seats at Texas Stadium, and it was so loud that I had a ringing in my ear for 2 days after the game.

It's probably true that the experience varies from section to section. I'm in the club area, so you'd think there'd be more lame corporate types there, but my section is pretty rowdy.

I'd agree with you. I'm not quite sure what Don is talking about.

I haven't seen a whole lot of socializing.

my only complaints are financial. I wish parking was 5-10 dollars cheaper per lot and I wish beers were a "more reasonable for a sporting event" 6-7 bucks. as for the roof, i would like to see it open just once, but really, I don't mind it closed b/c it is a WAYYYYY better homefield advantage that way. other than that, I love the place and I'm psyched that I'll get to watch the Cowboys there for a very good portion of my life. I've been there 4 times already and it's not nearly enough. beautiful stadium. and it's all OURS!

My only experience in Texas stadium by all accounts was one of the loudest games there in recent memory. It was truly an unforgettable experience, but that being said....I've always liked the way a good chant can get a crowd pumped up. They make the patron, season ticket holder or first timer, feel more involved.

The best stadium experience I've ever been apart of is at the Verizon Center in DC. Washington Capitals games are amazing. They use the video boards with amazing effectiveness in getting the crowd involved. It seems like everyone is giving 100%. They even have their own particular fans (i.e. Crazy Ray or the Jets' Fireman) that are used to get chants going. It's unreal.

I'd love to hear this in Cowboys Stadium. I doubt it will happen, but if it did, it would be amazing with that facility.

I would like to see a better setup with a score board that gave you the down and distance. I love the big screen they have but the down and distance and score only being shown on the screens below the upper seat levels and hard to pick up at times.

Something needs to be done to block the sun from the West side that comes in during late afternoon games. Tint the windows, use a curtain. Something.

I haven't seen a whole lot of socializing.

It could have been those that were sitting around me. They didn't really seem "into" the game. I, for one, can't eat, drink, or detract my attention from the game.

I did peek over at your section, and they seemed more into the game.

Of course, I did have a few Eagles fans sitting around me, and they didn't have much to cheer about.

The glass actually does have some tint on it, and "green laws" these days require there to be some natural sunlight in buildings. I absolutely loved the sunlight coming into the stadium.

Here are some pics that I took before the kickoff of the playoff game.

That was my experience at the last game I attended vs the Raiders, people around me seemed more interested in having a Sunday (Thursday) social than to cheer the team on. Also wish the vendor would get out of the way, I don't recall seeing many vendor walking about Texas Stadium, after a while it became annoying

Yeah, I noticed that the vendors were everywhere also. I'm not really against anyone trying to earn a buck and give the fans a better experience.

I think the price points in the stadium have a lot to do with the types of fans sitting in any given section. Fans in the club seats pay a pretty penny, so perhaps they feel more compelled to make lots of noise.

I got the impression that many in my section got their tickets from friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc, and just wanted to experience a game. They were the cheapest seats in the house, so that isn't surprising.

Maybe so. I was sitting in sec 451 and there were a handful of us being loud (when on defense only) and others who seem to be interested in everything but the ball game or for 1 guy who was more interested in getting into a fight which many spent time watching myself I only noticed it because the offense was in the huddle. I do not know what cause the fight and could careless of what caused it I was there for 1 reason only to cheer on the Cowboys.

The stadium was designed for the sound to flow down to the field. So if you are high up, it will not sound as loud. I'm in the 300 level, and the sound is pretty loud overall. I was at every game, and yes some games weren't as loud. But every stadium will have that. Depending the opponent.

I do have to say, there are some section, including mine that many people sit around and do not cheer or just clap. So yes it can be louder. But it isn't as lame as what some people say.

But it's also has a lot to do with each persons opinions or perceptions and ideas of what it should be like.
