I certainly don’t recall the head to head contacts back then. Brown was so big for that era he probably didn’t need to use his head.
Go check it out. Go google some footage..youtube. It was very common.

YES IT IS NECESSARY. Its what makes the NFL special.
That’s your perception.

The NFL is more about the precision of a spiraled pass and reception or the moves and jukes of a runner running down the field than the brut physical contact.

Take away the gifted talent of the key positions and the sport is reduced to the WWE. Lol

I have no problem with the rule on principle, and I really do care about player safety more than I do the game these days, I just don't want to see refs using this rule to decide games. I can already see a 'did he or didn't he lower the helmet' controversy in our near future.

Your kidding right Diehard? Brown was the KING at leading with his head...,my gosh. Its what made him a beast...He was a man-child. He would seek out defenders and put his head down and crush them...OR SIMPLY RUN AROUND THEM. I'm shocked you don't know this.

I lived it. I don’t need to look at some footage . It wasn’t an issue back then because defenses weren’t leading with their head to make tackles.

I’m not disputing runners used their head when plowing thru the line.

And that's why its a dying down sport. This only hurts the product. The NFL is ran by Goodell...a lawyer...hence...THE BIGGER ISSUE is GODELL. The NFL will be circling the drain in 5 years if this keeps up.

I lived it too..I aint no spring chicken...I'm all for safety...but its like trying to eliminate punches to the head in Boxing...lol..for "safety" etc...its no longer boxing if you do that. Understand?

Goodell is attempting to save the league from lawsuits. It’s a business decision.

Op is a dinosaur

Running backs and blockers and tackler can no longer lower their head to initiate contact.

Rule has been changed to include offensive players .... with language that make the previous catch rule look clear as day. That is the OP's point.

The lawsuits make me laugh like players weren't aware that slamming heads at 30 miles an hour might cause problems down the road? You chose to play a very violent sport but you didn't have to. Can players sue at the high school and college levels?

And that’s a huge problem as coaches have taught to lead with their helmet which hasn’t always been the case.
They will have to learn to teach differently but it's not clear if that means around the los or on the goal line, I really don't think this is going to affect the game as much as some suspect. These refs will know whether a player was intentionally using his helmet and specifically to make contact with another's helmet. Hell, I can see that watching the games on the tube.

Quite a few times tacklers will lower the helmet on a player already in the process of being tackled and that is apparent. What is karma is that most of the injuries I see are when they hit their own player who is in the process of trying top spear the ball carrier too.

I do not need blow up hits to enjoy the game because I appreciate a perfectly executed tackle a thing of beauty in the game. And one of the best we ever had was Newman his first few years because K State DB's are taught tackling skills. He was great at wrapping up but then something happened that changed the game, Roy OU Williams and the Jacked Up segment on ESPN and the NFL promoting those hits to entice viewers that want violence. Then he starter banging off ball carriers for the big hits and on several plays I saw the ball carrier bounce off and keep going.

It is probably for the best. I spoke with Lance Briggs last year and I asked him about CTE. Dude told me sometimes he gets out of bed and starts walking and will forget where he is going and why he got up. Said it will take him a few seconds to remember what he was doing. It really changed my opinion on the whole head-collision issue. I will miss the old physicality but these rule changes are necessary.
I do this all the time and never played past high school football...it is called old age haha

Right !!

I don’t know how many times I’ve yelled . Just grab their feet or legs instead of trying to knock them off their feet.

Its already difficult for some schools to field enough guys to play football with parents growing concerns over head injuries. Especially in the more affluent neighborhoods.

Solution: DO NOT SIGN UP TO PLAY FOOTBALL. Choose another sport. PROBLEM SOLVED.
