I wonder how this will affect the QB slide. Since they were considered a ball carrier, they were no longer protected by the QB rule and the only thing preventing them from going head first for an additional yard or two was the headhunter in the secondary. Now, they could get a couple of extra yards and a defender ejected.

Great idea...give the inept refs yet more reason to wield and abuse their power...:omg: Brilliant
Why do you watch the sport? The refs are inept and all a part of the conspiracy to keep the best chance for ratings down. If I felt that way, I'd find another sport. I mean you are rooting for a team that not only has to beat the other 11 on the field, but all the refs and the league's front office. Oh why oh why do they hate us so much?

The refs are not inept, in fact, they're amazingly good at full speed but they are human and I happen to like that aspect of the game and I wish they'd dump all the instant replay, challenges and reviews and get the game back that used to be. One that could be played in under 3 hours.

My only gripe about this is another opportunity to stop the action and spend another 5 minutes listening to analysts restate their opinion and bring in the official official expert.

Doubt it becauwee that is around the los and they do not enforce the horse collar there. And you've got the lineman making helmet to helmet which is unavoidable, they won't flag that.

But, a play out in the open where it is apparent that the tackler or ball carrier intentionally tried to use the helmet as a weapon? Yep that's what they want to stop. These people are not out to pull then teeth of the aggressiveness of the sport but I have seen players use their helmet when that wasn't necessary and that should be stopped.

I'm JUST saying..human beings by nature are imperfect..so why then saddle them with more responsibility? Yes..99% of the refs are amazing...but its that 1 % that I worry about, even under the best of circumstances. But to add another rule like this one just adds too much murkiness to the game. Its not fair to the refs really...and the player. I say...give the new rule a test run in preseason, then ONLY adopt the new rule if it can be realistically enforced. I would be ok with that. I'm just skeptical.

If after preseason the league decides to put the rule on hold until the can revise it, I would go for that. Lets do it right. This rule seems like an overreach.

I have two grandsons, ages 9 and 6, and I know their parents stance on organized football and at a recent birthday party I asked all of the parents of the 9 year olds about football. Not one of the 10 I spoke with is going to let their sons play. That is not an anomaly, that is happening all across this country and it does not bode well for the future of the sport. And almost all of those parents are Longhorn diehards so they'll gladly watch other parents' sons risk head injuries.

The game has to do something at every level if it is to remain America's favorite sport. All the NFL is doing is following the NCAA's attempt but in reality, that does not remove the risk, it just adds a penalty.

And what do you think the media and the players' lawyers would do with that? It is done and there is no going back. The only test they've ever used in pretend games was instant replay.

I live in Texas and love the Horns...My teenage son has been concussed twice in back to back years playing football. The first concussion lasted about 1 week...that 2nd one lasted almost 2 months ! My wife and I let him decide if he wants to play again. He decided not to. We agree, but it doesn't change my stance on the sport. Got to teach better technique early to avoid those concussions. Its a gladiator sport,period...its dangerous. Proud of our son for making the decision he did not to play again. He played it since pee wee league..and never an issue..so you just never know. Sometimes its a fluke play. Those parents ,I commend them.

Mind you..my son is 6ft 3....and about 250...and STILL got concussed. The rate of speed of even highschool players..and the size of todays player does make a difference.I admit that.

That's a shame my son is 12. And he plays football. There were enough kids this past year to create 2 teams. It builds character to play on the best team sport in the country and the discipline that comes along with it. I will say my son is big and pretty athletic so makes sense for him and us as parents that he most likely wont get hurt too bad. I think another also stated more affluent areas might have less representation. If their high school offers lacrosse as a sport it's an affluent area.

What the majority don't realize is that the exact same things were being said back in 1979 when the rules were passed to increase the safety of the game.
