Although I would love to see it happen, two things are telling me it won't:

1) This team just paid Terrell Owens big money and has two more big-money contracts to pay in Hamlin and Ware. They may not be able to afford to pay Roy Williams' asking price at this point.

2) If the Lions traded him at this point, they would be sending a clear signal to their fanbase and the NFL that they were 'giving up' on this year. What team could afford to do that?

i don't think it would send that signal, stash. they've still got their other big ticket WR and like you said, got some other big money players to pay. i put nothing past jones and company for cap management.

also, the fans know roy wants out. if we had a player that wanted to be "set free" would the fans get upset if we traded that player as long as it was fair value?

i don't think so. if it's a good trade for both sides, detroit fans will be glad to get something THIS year vs. next year nothing. i mean, would they franchise him after paying all that cash to their #1 wr?

i'd love to see roy williams here.

There isn't much to tell that you can't figure out by simple logic. Even the DFP writer has it figured out. Look at him questioning the excuses for missing OTAs.

So, ask yourselves this. If you were Roy Williams, why would you be missing the OTAs?

1. You want Detroit to pay you.

...or...

2. You want to force a trade, and that team to pay you.

Why? Because if he gets hurt before he has a new contract, whether that is with the Lions or another team, that contract isn't worth squat compared to what it is worth if he gets a new deal now.

So who is advising him not to attend? His agent. Why? Because he wants to get paid.

Detroit can't give him what he wants. I seriously doubt he will re-sign with them unless the deal is for ridiculous money and who could blame him if he gets it.

It would be great to see him added to this team, but why would Detroit trade him to us. They would probably have more than a few callers on him and I am sure they would look to get him out of the NFC.

Guys I'm just curious, but what do you think his agent would request......monetary wise? How much guaranteed money would have to be dished out?

Probably wants to be one of the top 5 or 6 highest paid recievers. Considering how good hes been with a terrible franchise.

I still dont think Chad Johnson is off the table. I dont think hes going to flat out be a ****** like T.O. was doing in Philly, but hes going to be stomping his feet until he gets his way.

Only question is, do you want to make a trade and shake things up so much late August early September?

My sources tell me we won't have enough money to sign Roy Williams once we work out a deal with Cedric Benson....

Well, any team that trades for him would only do so if he agreed to an extension.

Once again, pretend you're Roy Williams and you want to play in Dallas. You're in the final year of your contract and going to be an UFA at the end of 2008.

How can you make it happen? Simple, by not agreeing to a long term contract with Detroit or any other team.

Detroit only has 3 options.

1. Give him an outrageous amount of money with the Franchise tag or a new deal. They already have outrageous money tied up at WR with Calvin Johnson.

2. Let him leave via Free Agency and get nothing in return.

3. Trade him. If he refuses to re-work a deal with anyone else how will he be traded to anyone else?

Mark my words, by the end of the Summer the trade rumors for him will flare up again.

We now have another reason to root against the Lions. B/c if they are 0-5 before the deadline, and they have reason to believe he wont re-sign, it makes a lot of sense for them.

I could deal with a signing that took place during season.

Really I would be ok with it....

Also remember that the Cowboys have increased their cap room to over 8 million. Looks to me like they are prepared just in case.

What, exactly, would be a "reasonable" trade for RW?

Our Roy Williams, Carpenter, and Coakley

i'm all for giving up any kind of draft picks for him.. i don't want to lose any of the players we have.. i think we have a great team now and would hate to lose any of them (starters or significant players i mean)..

but i'd give up our #1 next year in a heartbeat.. even throw in a 4th rounder or so..

Doesn't Dallas have even more outrageous money tied up in Terrell Owens?

I mean he is now one of the game's highest-paid receivers.

Not to mention the mega-deals given to both Newman and Barber and the deals still to be worked out with Hamlin and Ware.

So how could the Cowboys afford to pay Roy Williams' asking price while the Lions couldn't?
