Yeah, but one will have a salary of about $5 million per year, while the other's would be about $9 million. Big difference there too.

Do they announce it by essentially 'giving up' before the season even begins?

I ask because that's the signal I'd get if my team was trading away one of our best players for 'future considerations'.

it does seem you maximize matt jones to dallas and minimize any other potential move.

if i were a detroit fan i'd be happy to get a 1st round pick for a player we're not likely to sign in a year. rebuilding? nah - just smart business.

I don't think I do. I might feel that trading for Jones has a better possibility of happening based solely on circumstances. Would you disagree with that?

I don't see how it's good for 'business' from a fan perspective.

I wouldn't be rushing to give my money or to follow a team too 'cheap' to re-sign a top receiver.

Trading a player who can help you now for a draft pick in 2009 clearly says "we're giving up on this year" to the fans.

It's one thing if it's a problem child like Chad Johnson in Cincinnati, that you can explain to your fans, but I don't see how the Lions trading away Roy Williams says anything but "see ya next year".

yes. i would. i don't see jones "settling" just because something is there. if he were going to do that he'd have drafted someone.

roy is a #2 they won't have next year anyway.

Fair enough.

And for the record, I hope you're right about this.

No I didn't. I was including that in the option of them paying him ridiculous money to keep him.

Yea missed it. Work drains my soul.

Well I think thats what they will do. No reason to cut or release him this year at least

I don't think they will. If that were their plan they would have at least made contract overtures to him to try and keep him long term.

They haven't.
