The overturned fumble

Dude all I’m saying is. That exact thing that the defender did gets called roughing the passer all the time in the NFL

I didn’t even celebrate when DIGGS caught the ball because I saw it happen live and expected the flag to be thrown.

didn’t shock me at all they made that call.

I got that.

Just pointing out other things to help show how the refs affect the game.

Though you could make an argument that the original judgement call on the Dak play should have been TD...but since it wasn't, you can't overturn it based on the video.

Well that's the thing about "should." If they have a "we have to see it standard" then they should not have called Dak's sneak a TD. I get calling it one so the review process can help you, but if they called it a TD and video couldn't help them definitively say it wasn't, they could have awarded a TD that wasn't actually a TD. Hard to say what the better approach is,

Yup. It almost has to be when so many calls are judgment calls. No two people will see things exactly the same. I mean look at the broadcasters today. They were pretty convinced. So for the refs, good luck getting it right exactly the same ways across 16 games a week.
The announcers never ever said they saw indisputable evidence of a recovered bobble. They just assumed it as did the refs. All bogus, all against the rules.

I think most evidence points to him not repossessing the ball.

The ball came loose as soon as he hit the ground.

Are we to believe that he lost control of the ball, then regained possession of the ball and then coincidentally, 1/4 of a second later, the ball popped loose once he hit the ground? That’s a big coincidence.

what makes more sense?

he lose control of the ball, never truly regained possession of the ball and then the ball fully came loose once hitting the ground.

or

he loses control of the ball, regains possession of the ball in a 1/4 second and then just as a matter of coincidence, the ball pops out again?

I know which one sounds way more plausible….
Scenario 3, the ball was fully loose before he hit the ground as no evidence exists that shows the ball in (or near) his hands when down.

I agree, it should've been ruled "inconclusive", at best. I'm just saying that, if I hadn't seen the play at all, and the only thing I had from which to extrapolate an opinion was the vide, I'd say it was probably a fumble.
Knowing that and no evidence otherwise like supposed other angle refs saw, we got screwed. I do not think refs should get any other views than fans so that we know we are not getting hosed. People bet on these games and millions of dollars are at stake with bettors and teams winning or losing. This is a disgrace.

You're right, but just thinking back on the play, IIRC correctly, considering where he was holding the ball when last we saw it, and where his body crossed the plane, it seems about 75% likely that the ball crossed the plane. Certainly not definitive, but even with no skin in the game, I think I would've called that a TD and hoped the video showed clear evidence one way or the other, rather than call the less likely scenario and hope the video cleared it up.

I have been discouraged in recent years with the NFL’s rule changes where as a viewer at home you have no idea anymore what the referees are going to decide when they review a play. I use to feel I knew the rules well enough where I was sure of the call after watching it but not anymore.

But that overturned fumble has to be the worst reversal I have ever seen. The replay with the side view clearly shows the ball coming loose but during the review the officials had to see some view that was indisputable that the runner reestablished control of the ball and then fumbled a second time after his knee had already touched the ground. The only other view they showed was from behind and there is no way you can say that he reestablished control and lost it again.

That call really has me concerned. How in the world can any official stand by the call that they see irrefutable evidence of reestablishing control and losing it again?

Has anyone heard any other explanation? Was there another view we did not see?

My biggest problem is that I didn’t see conclusive evidence that the running back had regained control. However, maybe the refs had a different view.

That's the rule. You can't hit a QB in the neck/head area.

How is it you guys don't get this? It happens in every single game. If you make contact with a QBs neck or head area, it's likely gonna get called. Both replays show his forearm up near his head when he makes contact.
I want to see the replay that shows it definitely. It was a huge play in the game and the broadcast took forever to show anything. The first was from behind and basically showed nothing. Later we got the opposite end zone view and showed basically the same thing. It was a terrible call that never should have been flagged. Neither replay shows anything that should have been called roughing. I will admit there might be a replay from the other 8 to 15 cameras, but no one here has seen them

Agreed. Given the complexity of the sport. It’s almost impossible to write up the rules to not require a lot of subjective decision making by the refs. Subjective decisions that have to be made split second.

I never actually saw the play after he threw the ball, as I got distracted and had to go do something, but I heard it, and knew just from the sound it was gonna be flagged. From what I'm reading, he came down with his arm in the neck area. If that's true, they're gonna baby the QB and throw the flag.

The two they showed are pretty clear that he made contact around the neck area. The one from behind is pretty definitive to me, as you can see the forearm come down right around the neck area. That was more than enough for me to agree with the call. Other Cowboys fans saw it too.

It wasn't a terrible call. You are just whining because that's what you seemingly like to do - whine about officials and think they are out to get the Cowboys.
