The Pass Rush

The concern for me is will the club continue its habit of trading two picks for one pick just so they can get someone marginally better. This team habitually drafts like they've only heard of 10% of the players available and they have to trade up to get THE guy.

2009 3rd and 4th rd picks for Jason Williams (RD3)
2010 2nd and 4th rd picks for Sean Lee (RD2)
2012 1st and 2nd rd picks for Mo Claiborne (RD1)
2014 2nd and 3rd rd picks for Demarcus Lawrence (RD2)

Once in a while, fine. Do your homework and take that shot. Doing it this frequently is just delusional. It's robbing the team of starters and depth. The DL probably isn't in such rough shape if we hadn't repeatedly given away multiple day 1 or 2 picks just to get that one guy the team just had to have.

He can play LBer too, when he wants to. You can just see his lack of effort from watching him play. He is slow off the ball, even slower to chase plays and does not seem like he cares.

It is too bad, because when he acts like he wants to make a play, he is fully capable. Probably drives the coaches insane.

I agree. He doesn't have or trust his instincts and/or is overthinking the play. You just gotta go when the ball is snapped. I don't believe he doesn't care but the exact cause of his inconsistency is an.......enigma. I love that word. :D

On the nosey. :)

Pretty simple.
Six consecutive years of drafting -- 2009 through 2014, and not one consistent defensive playmaker drafted by Dallas.
Hence the team is forced to compile the roster and compensate for the poor drafting with sketchy undrafted college free-agents, over-paid NFL free agents, and castaways from other NFL teams.

You can see for yourself who contributed on both sides of the ball. I don't think it too bad but you will see where we are giving up picks. I haven't looked at the league average for starters and contributors. You really need to look at both sides of the ball though and not just defense although I understand your point.

I was mostly joking but after seeing what the Dline + Miller were doign in Denver last night, and what the PHI Dline did to Dallas' Oline, I realize just how badly this team needs to improve on pass rush.

At this point, given the slim pickings out there with Shaun Phillips off the market, why not Michael Sam. At least he already knows the system a bit. Worst case he does not help and Dallas is in the same spot they're in now anyway

I concur.

Lets face it we arent generating any pass rush from the outside. Why dont we blitz Carter and McClain ALOT more through the middle, I just dont see them getting any better at the edge rush this season. They gotta do something to get the QBs looking at the pass rush and not down field

I've wandered about this pass rush you talk about, actually been non existent for a while now,...and we need it, about NOW.

We came into this season knowing there was a massive lack of pass rush ability. We didn't really seem to try too hard to address it either

Sure they said they'd have taken Barr or Donald, but if Jerry really wants something, he'll get it (Claiborne). Did they really think they could bargain shop for a pass rush?

Apparently they did. :D

Realistically, I did not expect them (defense) to be any good this year. I expected the offense to carry the load. I believe the plan is to rebuild the defense next year.

I don't think they expected this to be a winning season and they were just decided to try to stabilize the roster and save money to gear up in 2015. Jerry for the first time that I know of conceded that they probably wouldn't be a good team. Obviously, he never says anything that directly, but that's basically what he was saying when you decode the Jerry speak.

They considered keeping Ware, so all the money that would have gone to him was saved and they can now spend in free agency for 2015 if they find some good options.

I would take the money they saved and probably the money saved from not picking up Melton's 9M option and I would sign a top free agent pass rusher.

They can probably find a CB to replace Carr for less than Carr's 8M salary, so they can upgrade that spot without really spending any additional money and might actually save some money.

If they have to use the money from cutting Carr to get a top free agent pass rusher I would be good with that also. They can manage with the other CBs and a draft pick to replace Carr is they can get a legit pass rush.
