Ron Leary stayed upright for 16 games this year. Ben Bass has been given 2 opportunities and has stayed healthy for 2 games. I hope it works out for him but fail to see the connection.

False. Bass wasn't hurt in 2012, he was on the practice squad until the end of the year. He was moved to the active roster because another NFL team wanted to sign him to their active roster.

In other words, the guy that is "comical" when discussed as a backup for next year had a better first year in the NFL than Leary.

Tyrone Crawford and Ben Bass would have made a difference. Wow. That is all I can say.

Now the "DL is a real strength of this team" comment from the GM doesn't seem so outlandish, does it?

And you start to understand why you saw the worst defense in the history of the team if not the NFL?

Deal with it, realist.

I think if you get what Ratliff was supposed to be, Ware can bounce back.

He will need to be scaled back in terms of the number of snaps he takes though. It is clear he is at the point where being an every down lineman is something he cannot physically handle and be dominant. His body is starting to betray him.

I can't relate, so I'll take your word for it.

Anything I've ever asked of my body, it does. To this day.

I think Ware stays and plays DE.

I don't doubt we'll improve the DL in the offseason but not to the tune of 4 new starters.

we'll see. at this point until we even know who the d-coordinator will be, I wouldn't rule anything out. no matter what, I think we go DE in round 1, unless a really good DT falls.

I thought Bass was moved to active roster when Kenyon Coleman got hurt in the middle of last year? He then played 1 game and 1 series last year, went to IR. this year he didn't play 1 snap unless I missed it. Straight to IR.

I could be wrong, I'm only a fan with an Internet connection.

if you cut carr before june 1 it adds more dead money, if you cut him june 1 then you don't have the money for free agency. i'm all for the ware deal just don't think cutting carr and needing another cb as well as 3 dline guys is really feasable to do. i'm all for any plan that makes us better. just don't know how to make us better by creating a huge hole at cb
I'm not referring to Carr. They need to cut Ware and Austin and not re-sign Hatcher and Spencer. Carr is still young.

I understand what you are saying, but...

Not every team is going to have the same needs in the DL as the Cowboys.

And not every team plays the free agent game.

In addition no matter what the opinion is of Jerry the GM, Jerry the salesman has been relatively affective. He knows how to sell the Cowboys.

Also the no income tax thing in Texas does give the Cowboys a little bit of an advantage.

Finally look at the contracts given out to defensive linemen last offseason... These guys aren't getting a princely sum.

let's hope it works out like this. realistically, the cowboys sit back thru the first wave of free agency just like last offseason and then pick up a few scraps. this team needs 3 of the first 4 picks to be dline. they also need to focus on talent. if there is a player with character issues but immense talent dropping, draft him. we need TALENT desperately.

I think you have to take a chance on Ware with the possibility the elbow surgery will help him get his strength back and even if it doesn't you need a year for his replacement to bulk up and train. Plus a 75% Ware is gonna be as effective as who you get to rotate and replace him. With him you have the security of knowing he will be working his butt off to get back.

Just a few years ago "status quo Jones" gutted the O-line the same way your talking about and it's took 3 years for it to get back to looking decent. I don't mind seeing a guy cut but you need to have something lined up.

That's what happens when your replacements are journeymen... Going with Ware another year is a complete waste of a year. He hasn't been the same guy for the last two years.

Just googled it, that is right on the midseason promotion and he did have an ankle injury last year. But they did bring him from the practice squad because another team (the Raiders IIRC) wanted to sign him. The key factor for Bass is how he played in the preseason this year, which was pretty good. It would have landed him a backup role, which this year would have meant an improvement over the tryout camp we had in the backup DT spots.

Now that I think about it, I would bet on 1 new DL starter next year unless you count Crawford as new.

Just a guess.

Murphy, Ealy, Nix...who do you like in the first rd?...I know the D-line is your specialty.

off topic:

For those who can get to a television, "NFL Replay" on the NFL Channel is showing the 90 minute version of the Boys/Eagles game in 30 minutes at 2 pm central.

I agree. They have to hit on talent.

And there's no doubt that there will be some defensive lineman available through FA (even after the "first wave" is gone) who'll be able to help this defense. And it's not like they're going to sign more than a couple FA linemen.

I'd take Hageman. He's a disruptive force in pushing the line. Signing Joseph on top of that would bolster the interior of our Dline from where it has stood this season.

I'm enjoying the growing possibility that we'll have four new linemen next year.

Well considering we don't have the cap space to be real players in free agency and any new starters are likely coming from the draft, to me, it's more scary than enjoyable to realize we could have 4 rookies starting along the defensive line. Even if we drafted along the DL with our first 4 picks, we're stilling asking a 3rd and 4th rounder to walk and start from day one. Unless of course, you're just talking about 4 new starters (not necessarily new to the team), as others have alluded to.

Personally, I think Ware and Selvie are both back next year. It also wouldn't surprise me to see Spencer brought back on a cheap, one year "show me" contract as a short term stop gap.
