Just like any other workout, if you do it incorrectly you can hurt yourself.
When doing these, keep your body bent inwards like when doing a crunch. If you aren't, you are making your back do the work rather than your abs which is the whole point of doing it in the first place.

This is why I shake my head at guys at the gym. Many of them come in and grab the heaviest dumbbells they can to do curls with and then struggle so much with poor form that they are doing more damage then good.
I can curl a 50lbs dumbbell, but I mainly do "21s" type curls with only 20lbs and do hammers with 25lbs.
This is 21s, but I use dumbbells

Basically it works the lower forearm, then the bicep, then both. If you do it this way, it builds the strength evenly on the arm. The hammers curls also work the bicep, but then work the upper side of the forearm.
