I think the only problem to hiring Thurman is Wade has no previous relationship with him nor does Jerry Jones. Assume Wade hires someone he knows unless someone he respects suggests he look at Thurman cause our secondary could sure use lots of help.

Whenever Dennis Thurman played the Cowboys DBs swiped the football. Everywhere that he has coached since 1988 the DBs have swiped the football. Take a look at the Ravens INT numbers for the last 6 years. You think some of that is not about Dennis Thurman? If you do then please explain this quote from Ronnie Lott's Hall of Fame induction speech.

While thats all well and good. I am taking your posts and info as having a very goo understading of the player and what he can do for us.

But it begs the question.... How much can he help us in todays NFL? Things have changed alot of defenses and DB(rules-wise). First thought is we can only get better... but how does he get them to play like back then when back then is... well... back then

I would LOVE to bring Thurman in to coach our DBs! He has proven success everywhere he has played and coached.

I love how Bates is the "token" white guy in the pic. :laugh2:

That backfield of Walls, Fellows, Thurman, & Downs was outstanding.
You want some amazing facts about those guys? Here you go.

Everson "Cubby" Walls, undrafted out of Grambling State in 1981 despite a 12 round Draft. 57 career INTs. 55 DBs drafted that year.

Michael Downs, undrafted out of Rice in 1981. 35 career INTs.

Ron Fellows, 7th round pick in 1981. 19 career INTs.

Dennis Thurman, 11th round draft pick 1978. 36 career INTs.

That's 147 INTs and the highest any of them was drafted was the 7th round. Meanwhile we all want a CB in the 1st round this year. In 1981 Dallas also drafted two other DBs. Vince Skillings out of Ohio State in the 6th round and Ken Miller out of Eastern Michigan in the 7th round.

Bill Bates from that picture was also undrafted out of Tennessee.

Just FYI, I read in FWST, that as of today, Thurman has not been contacted by the team.
You're going to make me

I thought I did read in Eatman's column that we intend to.

Troy Polamalu was a freshman in 1999, so he was at USC for two years while Thurman was there.
I thought about adding guy's he also coached, but decided not to.

Lifers like Wade probably know almost every coach in the league through one connection or another. For instance, Wade was Buddy Ryan's DC in Philly, and of course Rex was the DC for the Ravens... So even if Wade doesn't know Thurman personally, he can get the scoop on how good a coach he is.

Of course, there are plenty of good coaches out there with all the firings going on. As miamicowboy21 said, the guy from Miami is highly-regarded, too.

Everson Walls is the only guy to lead the NFL in interceptions for 3 different seasons.

One candidate to replace Bowles could be Dennis Thurman, an assistant with the Baltimore Ravens the past six seasons, including secondary coach the past four. The Cowboys haven't contacted Thurman, a Dallas defensive back from 1978-85.

DMN
Coach Wade Phillips and defensive coordinator Brian Stewart had discussions with former Ole Miss coach Ed Orgeron on Tuesday afternoon to possibly replace Rodgers. But Orgeron also is looking at other teams.

A possible replacement for Bowles could be former Cowboys defensive back Dennis Thurman, who spent the last six years as secondary coach in Baltimore. Thurman was recently let go from the Ravens staff when the club fired head coach Brian Billick. Thurman played nine years in the NFL, including eight with the Cowboys from 1978-85.

You've made this idea sound very appealing.

Plus, Thurman is clearly a gangsta.

So...I'm on board.

I hate to say it, but this defense needs a few gangsta. That's the one thing our defense could use.

I'd like to think that Thurman's crew would have emerged from the Giants game with at least one pick. Can our old dogs learn new tricks? Sometimes you can't go home again.

Its about bloody time we hire older Cowboys as coaches but Jerry doesn't like the older players so I highly doubt it will happen, Man DT was awesome, Does anyone out remember when he broke Harold Carmichaels catch streak, "he was a serious ball player I loved his intensity. Hire him Jerruah or I'm coming to your house to .........

Yesterday it was reported that the Cowboys showed interest in hiring Dennis Thurman to replace Todd Bowles. For the last 6 years Thurman has been the DB Coach of the Baltimore Ravens. I have to admit, I love the idea.

But does he have any fire in his belly? THAT is the question.

Those were frustrating years, the 1980s, but that overachieving secondary was a bright spot for several seasons.

A lot of credit should go to Gene Stallings. Gene was as old school and hard core as you could get, so it was interesting to see how this veteran coach who learned from Bear Bryant was able to mesh so well with Dennis and his boys. Stallings once said that Thurman was the smartest player he ever coached.

On a side note, former Cowboy Tony Hill used to organize the "Hoopsters," a basketball team made up of former Cowboys. They would travel around and do charity games. I've seen them a few times and once, Everson Walls was with them.

It was fun to see how their football skills translated to the basketball court, but I remember that Everson -- as knock-kneed as he was -- had the best hand-eye coordination I had ever seen. He had extremely quick reactions, quick hands and an amazing ability to judge the flight of the ball.

Everson was certainly not stop-watch fast, but his feel for the game, his reaction time and his hand-eye coordination were off the charts. I'm glad he got a Super Bowl ring with Parcells.

Congrats on post #3000. What took you so long?

:D

I did not know Stallings said that about Dennis. Thanks for adding that.

Everson's 40 time was 4.72. That's why he did not get drafted. I believe he had more career INTs than every DB taken before him.
