Those were frustrating years, the 1980s, but that overachieving secondary was a bright spot for several seasons.
A lot of credit should go to Gene Stallings. Gene was as old school and hard core as you could get, so it was interesting to see how this veteran coach who learned from Bear Bryant was able to mesh so well with Dennis and his boys. Stallings once said that Thurman was the smartest player he ever coached.
On a side note, former Cowboy Tony Hill used to organize the "Hoopsters," a basketball team made up of former Cowboys. They would travel around and do charity games. I've seen them a few times and once, Everson Walls was with them.
It was fun to see how their football skills translated to the basketball court, but I remember that Everson -- as knock-kneed as he was -- had the best hand-eye coordination I had ever seen. He had extremely quick reactions, quick hands and an amazing ability to judge the flight of the ball.
Everson was certainly not stop-watch fast, but his feel for the game, his reaction time and his hand-eye coordination were off the charts. I'm glad he got a Super Bowl ring with Parcells.
