The common response to the Romo longevity question is 2-3 years. It's somewhat consensus that the Cowboys will have to replace him by 2018 at the latest.

But why? That makes no sense really.

I think the actual answer to this question is both scary and encouraging at the same time.

If Romo can play 3 more years, then why can't he play 4 or 5 if he wants to? If he can play a couple of seasons, then the collar bone is fine and the back is holding up pretty well, right? If it is, then 38 isn't that old to carry on. Peyton Manning would still be playing if he could feel a football. Tom Brady looks nowhere near being done. Drew Brees is trudging along quite well.

Or.....yikes.

Tony might be done already. Perhaps his ability to take a hit is no more. If that's the case, it's about to get dark around here real soon, as in, by September. We'll know this sooner rather than later. I look forward to seeing him take a good hit and landing on that shoulder (but not often). Let's find out right away. Bring it.

Tim Duncan was supposedly done about 7 years ago. Many didn't think Brees' body would hold up more than a season or two in New Orleans. Same goes for countless baseball players. We always seem too quick to count guys out, and it's not like Romo is a world-class sprinter or a middle linebacker.

Here's hoping for the sunny side of that egg. Romo until 2020.

I would say the truth lies somewhere in between, but I am afraid you are right on at least one of your predictions.

I think this year is Romo's last chance.

I think he gets hurt next year and we win 1 or 2 games.

I think Garrett Moves to the front office in 2018 and a college coach like Urban Meyer takes over.

We pick the number one Qb in the 2018 draft with the number one or two pick.

See your point.
If he is brittle, then no more Romo.
There may be a dramatic dropoff in performance from injury which may take a couple years to reach an unacceptable level.

That makes no sense. If Romo can make it through this season, why does that equate to getting hurt next season?

He's either already done, or he can go a while. Of course, any QB can get hurt. Brees, Rodgers, Brady, Roethlisberger.....they've all dealt with serious injuries.

Please enlighten me why Garrett moves to the front office in 2018 or later. The Boys and fans do not need or want a "front office executive in training'. If he cannot make it as a Head Coach how the heck will he improve or add value to our front office.

Good because there isn't any QBs coming out of the draft for the next 5 years!

I guess the idea is that part of his charm is he is a better administrator than technician on game days. I have no idea.

I can't recall of many head coaches getting fired/elevated after failing as a head coach. Usually a promotion means you earned it somehow.

The hits that knocked him out last year were not viscous from an NFL perspective, I think he's growing more and more frail.

How many more injuries and/or potential injuries does he and family want him to endure that could impact his quality of life after the NFL?

And to boot, those of us north of 35 can attest to, you get to a point where you're athletic abilities just diminish. Yes he's a pro athlete but he's nearing the age where you hit a wall.

The first one was pretty serious. The dude landed on him purposefully with all his weight to break that shoulder.

The second time, the bone simply wasn't healed yet.

It all depends on if/when he gets hurt.
He may get up from the next hit or at his age it may end his career.
Or he and his family may feel it's no longer worth it.

I am far more worried about level of play dropping off (not that I've noticed any yet) than injury... this seems to happen to people at different stages, but it always happens.

I'm not really worried about injury... the pattern with Romo's career has been that he either breaks his collarbone or he plays 15-16 games for the year. Unless he becomes the first NFL player I've ever heard of to have 3 breaks, I'm guessing he'll be fine.

I tend to agree.
The 1st hit was worst, but I seem to remember Romo taking bigger hits...

Well if he is brittle, then we will know soon enough in 2017 to get a free agent or 1st round pick or both.

Captain Optimism strikes again!

As opposed to the starry-eyed visions of Romo playing 5 more years?
No, bloke, Romo's superfans seem to think that of all the great QBs, Romo alone will escape Father Time. That is not realistic. Better for our front office to develop a worst-case scenario than to be so naive as to court disaster by delaying the signing of a blue-chip QB in the draft. DiasteR with a capital R, as the old gimme would write. (Bless his heart he is stuck in a greyhound station in Memphis, vowing to return to the forum soon, and he has taken names, he says.)

Injuries are fairly random for the most part but he does have a back issue and that limits the shelf life.

This will be Tony Romo's new theme song the first time he gets hit hard in 2016.

The OP is looking at the question wrong.

The question isn't how much longer can he play so much as when is the soonest we could replace him if he cannot play.

The answer is that we can't cut him this year or next. So the first time you can conceivably think about having him off the roster is this time in 2018.

Can Romo play 5 more years? I dunno.

But he has to play two more.
