The Romo miscalculation

The common response to the Romo longevity question is 2-3 years. It's somewhat consensus that the Cowboys will have to replace him by 2018 at the latest.

But why? That makes no sense really.

I think the actual answer to this question is both scary and encouraging at the same time.

If Romo can play 3 more years, then why can't he play 4 or 5 if he wants to? If he can play a couple of seasons, then the collar bone is fine and the back is holding up pretty well, right? If it is, then 38 isn't that old to carry on. Peyton Manning would still be playing if he could feel a football. Tom Brady looks nowhere near being done. Drew Brees is trudging along quite well.

Or.....yikes.

Tony might be done already. Perhaps his ability to take a hit is no more. If that's the case, it's about to get dark around here real soon, as in, by September. We'll know this sooner rather than later. I look forward to seeing him take a good hit and landing on that shoulder (but not often). Let's find out right away. Bring it.

Tim Duncan was supposedly done about 7 years ago. Many didn't think Brees' body would hold up more than a season or two in New Orleans. Same goes for countless baseball players. We always seem too quick to count guys out, and it's not like Romo is a world-class sprinter or a middle linebacker.

Here's hoping for the sunny side of that egg. Romo until 2020.

That you Jerry? Please step away from the kool-aid.

I seriously question whether Romo can play at an elite level anymore. He didn't look like the same QB before the injury last year but the sample size was too small to tell you anything.

He looked great in game 1 especially the game winning drive. Stop it.

Tony sticking around all that time is a bit far-fetched. But I wouldn't mind seeing him sticking around in a back-up QB/mentor role for a couple years once the young'uns develop. Just a thought. Juuuuust a thought.

Wouldn't be surprised if Tony was the QB Coach at some point down the trough.

Sure Romo would make a great QB coach but why when he could go to the booth make more money and have more time with family ? Aikman could have become a coach but the allure of the booth the money and ALOT of time with family won out. I would say Romo would be more likely to move to a GM position than a coach but most likely he will go to the booth.

Opposing teams seem to have figured out that cheap shotting Tony is permissible & effective. I really don't know how he can complete another NFL season with teams targeting his back and collar bone.

The OP is looking at the question wrong.

The question isn't how much longer can he play so much as when is the soonest we could replace him if he cannot play.

The answer is that we can't cut him this year or next. So the first time you can conceivably think about having him off the roster is this time in 2018.

Can Romo play 5 more years? I dunno.

But he has to play two more.

:hammer:

The first one was pretty serious. The dude landed on him purposefully with all his weight to break that shoulder.

The second time, the bone simply wasn't healed yet.

So now you can expect every single defender to try and lay that career-ending blow to Romo every time they touch him.

I think this year is Romo's last chance.

I think he gets hurt next year and we win 1 or 2 games.

I think Garrett Moves to the front office in 2018 and a college coach like Urban Meyer takes over.

We pick the number one Qb in the 2018 draft with the number one or two pick.

Urban Meyer? Not likely, at least not if Jerry is still making the calls. Parcells was the last quality HC we hired since Jimmy and that was out of desperation following the Campo debacle and Jerry wanting a new stadium. I doubt Jerry suddenly does an about face and gives the control someone like Meyer would demand. Keep dreaming.

That is what happened with Aikman. Everyone knew his back was shot and he had a concussion history and they were going after him.

If we had referees as bodyguards like you see Brady enjoy every game, I would not worry. But we all know that is not the case.

Honestly, I feel most of us are well aware that Jerry's idea of Romo lasting another 3 to 5 years is more wishful thinking than anything else.

I can't help but think that if this team is able to get another 2 healthy years out of both Tony and Dez, we'll be extremely fortunate, indeed.

I'm also not confident about our chances for success if we rely on Kellen Moore to produce a winning record in any extended time for us.

Same for Aaron Rogers, who broke his collar bone. And Drew Brees. And Sam Bradford. And Matt Stafford. Etc.

Brady is also smart enough to throw the ball in under 2 seconds

On the play Romo got hurt he was supposed to throw it immediately. He had no protection help but pulled it down because Witten, Beasley and Butler were all in the same spot, along with 2 DBs

Brady is doing all this new - age stuff; eating right, stretching. compression chambers, hi tech mumbo jumbo, etc etc.....but, it remains to be seen if that stuff will actually work...

I don't think Romo does much of any of that stuff....and likes cheeseburgers a little too much....:)

There is a wall. a steady decline. As you get older you just cant do all that stuff anymore. Well......you can, but you aint moving for a few days afterward....:)

I notice it in my sleep habits. If I stay up all night.....like I use to, for any reason, My body sort of shuts down for the next few days...

Although, I do think one day, with a marriage between Hi-Tech and the Medical industries.....were going to see people living well past 100- 150 years old, maybe even longer. I don think there is anything that cant stop that from taking place. Its going to happen...................
yeah brady is staying in shape , and working out in offseason, so he is going to be able to play
longer than tony.
Back when tony was playing golf and other stuff, he should have been working on conditioning.
It is too late now, and he has seemed overweight for years now.
I hope his spin move is still doable this year.

The coaches need to find ways to protect him from the gap rushers, that is a key.

Yeah, playing basketball and showing up at valley Ranch more than 90% (fact) of the team for the last several years made him total slacker.
You guys crack me up

The guy has always been a total gym rat. Ask anyone that actually is around him.
If you want him on slim for life, that's your issue, not his.

Have you EVER seen him too winded or immobile during a game (that is when he wasn't hurt)?

But we can agree that Romo is not Brady. Nor is almost anyone that has ever played.

I never said he was a slacker, and that he "seemed " overweight" I guess he might workout
or do more than it seems.
The main thing is he seems very slow running, and cannot seem to do the spin move as good as in the
past.
I hope he is in better shape than I think he is.
And having most of last year off may have helped his back situation.

Tony is tough, and always ready to play,
