While watching that great SB game last night played by two excellent teams, there were some clear messages sent about how to build a Super Bowl roster. If only the Cowboys front office could ever de-code them we would have a better chance to play in a SB again.

Here are some of those roster building messages:
  • Just having a great QB without some dominating players in the defensive trenches is not enough. This is a fundamental truth the Jones boys never seem to understand. Yes having a Pat Mahomes is HUGE. But without that great DL the chiefs don’t win that SB. Below are some great, even dominating QBs that underperformed in the playoffs because they did not have a great D.
    • Aaron Rodgers- won only one SB because he didn’t have enough help on defense. That simple.
    • Peyton Manning- an all time great that won 2 SBs, but lost a bunch of AFC championships and a SB because until he was with the broncos, he didn't have a great D.
    • Dan Marino- arguably the greatest passer in NFL history but never won a SB because he never had a great D.
    • Joe Burrow- he’s great. But if the bengals don’t get a better D around him, he’s another Marino.
    • Putting this point another way, if the Cowboys had Mahomes vs the pack in January, we only lose 48-45, lol.

  • Toughness matters a ton. Both the niners and chiefs are physically tough as nails. The niners are the most physical team in the NFL. Their defense punishes opponents. The chiefs are also physically tough. Their defense was vastly underrated this year. The mental toughness of the chiefs to stay in the game despite their offense being sluggish is testament to their mental toughness.

  • Having a defense capable of keeping you in the game until the offense comes alive. The chiefs D kept them in the game when their offense was terrible the first half. How many times did we see Dallas‘ defense crumble while the offense was struggling.
So what are the implications for the Cowboys?
  1. Get better in the front 7 on defense. We need some major help at DL, LB. Secondary is ok. (Everyone screams for a new QB but unfortunately that ain‘t happening now and even if it was, we don’t have enough defensive support for any QB)
  2. Get better at OL and RB. We desperately need a running game.
  3. Stop wasting second round picks on medical or mental rehabs because the GM wants to look smart. Draft guys that can play NOW.
As I watched that SB last night, it was crystal clear that the Cowboys aren’t nearly as close as we fans want to believe. The most important upgrade these team needs right now is some dominating beasts at DT and LB and an improved running game. There will be no cavalry rescue of this team at QB next year. So better get a better D and running game or even if we had Mahomes he couldn’t save this team.
I think some of us here was clamouring for linebacker and Oline early in the season. We did diddly squat to fill int he gaps when we needed to.

ok had to start a new post as I cant get past the smiles!

Bob if you added up all the points you have posted so far (recently) about what cowboys need, it would be overwhelming amount of things that
need fixing lol.
Too much for anyone sensible to say they are close.

For me just watching the SB tells me dallas cannot compete with either of those teams !
But jerry is going all in !! He is such a clown.

I think he believes his own lies.
Yep and we dont have Mahomes (who's QBR remains consistent throughout the play-offs). Harsh decision (especially fr the CAP Deniers), if you're going to pay your QB (and skilled position players), they better perform, because the rest of your roster is near JAG level.

IMHO, the 2 best teams actually made it to the Super Bowl and both teams are better than us at every single step. Top to bottom. Owner, GM, COACHES, players, water boy……We are so far away it’s not even funny.

….and we always will be…..

Great post. Its was a DL showcase superbowl for me. Interior defense must be a focus this offseason. Put some good weight back on Mazi and draft another DT. Draft and and sign LBers and let's play some physical defense.

Mahomes eats a ton of cap space. They are somehow getting it done. Obviously Mahomes is way better but the chiefs have figured a way to have a great supporting cast with the most expensive player in the league.

The chiefs also have one of the best GMs in the league - Brett Veach. When you look at their roster construction vs ours, it’s embarrassing.
But CBS never showed the chiefs GM in his suite during the Super Bowl. How many radio and tv interviews does he do per week? What’s his wife’s artwork look like? Does he ever watch game film?

I have never played any form of fantasy football but what I will say, and feel very confident in projecting this is...
You give me a different and more highly qualified HC and QB on this same Dallas team and we at least are in the NFCCG if not the SB.

That's my mindset.

Insert a few better HCs and better QBs onto our existing roster and you don't feel the same?

If not, no worries bro, I understand how opinions vary.
not with that run defense and CBs playing LBs. we still lose.

Chiefs GM Brett Veach:
  • Age 45; Been chiefs GM since he was 39.
  • Was chiefs Director of Player Personnel 2013-15
  • Began scouting Mahomes in his freshman year at Texas Tech, pushed for chiefs to move up and draft Mahomes in 2017.
  • Very aggressive in FA and trades, signing several key players after Mahomes signed his huge deal.
  • Does not do post game pressers or regular radio shows and only occasionally does interviews. Does an off-season podcast after the draft.
  • Has three Lombardis since 2019.

I blame the Jones family.they never invested everything they can in FA during Prescott years.a Dominant Defense is the best way to beat good teams in the playoffs.

we have likely seen the last Cowboy's Super Bowls in our lifetime.
Don't include me in YOUR snapshot...I'll just walk my own path then, using integrity and faith.

See ya'...I'm not carrying your topic of talk another complete year. No Thanks!

I'll enjoy the road taken.

I grew up in South Texas, and one day the Devil's Henchman came up to awaken my eyes, and took me to Hell. Once there, I just started to laugh my head off.

The Henchman came to me and asked me if I didn't reckognize where I was at? I replied, sure...I was in Hell.

He then asked me why I was laughing all the time?

I replied that I had been raised in South Texas and was told all the time that the only thing I had to look forward was Hell. So, I'm going to enjoy it...

Well the Devil had all he could take and came to me and said here, watch this. He then froze Hell over.

well Sir, I started to laugh my head off...to which which the Devil informed me that he had just frozen Hell over....to which I replied, that I already understood that, but I just made it 'till HELL FROZE OVER!!!!

I'll second this. And did you hear the pads popping from the Ravens defense as well? We are like marshmallows compared to these teams in the front 7. Totally different scheme and player type.

I’ve seen moments and some games where the defense played hard-nosed and physical, like the December 10, 2023 win against Philadelphia.

The trouble is that they weren’t consistent.

I noticed some smart plays as the result of good fundamental coaching as well.

Offensive linemen - like Feliciano - who even when they were beaten, ‘held’ just enough to impede the defender, but not enough grabbing to draw a penalty.

Blitzing corners - like McDuffie - who tried to block a pass while being mindful to immediately drop their hands to NOT hit the quarterback in the helmet drawing a flag.

Our team could stand to play ‘smarter’ as well.

If only the 28 years of players and coaches would stop holding our GM down!!!!

What a great resume! And we’re stuck with the Arkansas hillbilly and son “secret sauce” Giggles.
