The Saban move wasn't about money

Don't get me wrong. The money didn't hurt. But even the Dolphins owner said that he didn't think it was about money.

What was it about? I think if you listened to Saban's last press conference with the Miami media, before he took the job with Alabama, you get the reason.

He said that he hadn't even talked with his wife yet. Not just about the job, about ANYTHING.

That is, I think what is highly underestimated by many is the time commitment involved in coaching an NFL team versus coaching a College team.

Coaching seems to be a high time commitment job, regardless of what level you coach at. And the NCAA has gotten increasingly high pressure, so I'm not diminishing that.

But I still think if Saban were to explain himself it would come down to his family and what he thought was best for them.

The Alabama offer is guaranteed money. That is an 8 year commitment.

As Lou Holtz said on ESPN, he can get 25 1st round draft picks every year, instead of just 1.

I just think that Alabama will be more family friendly than Miami would have been.

I heard Charlie Weiss talking about this I think you will see more coaches that are NFL caliber go to the college level, money is about the same, pressure is not as great, don't have to deal with rich spoiled athletes, and the coach is the king of the university, don't have to deal with the media as much, travel less and shorter distances when you do travel, college coaching is not as time consuming and can spend more time with family. These were his reasons.

It a 20 hour a day job. Allthough, you can greatly reduce your time if you have quality assistants that you trust.

The family USUALLY has something to do with it... its true... but if Saban can see that he will be let off the hook somewhat... he will run with that story and milk and hope it clears him... somewhat....

Hey... all coaches are not cutout for NFL gigs... Spurrier.. etc... HE WANTED OUT!

Did you see the way he threw out that red challenge flag that time? (I wanna throw, should I throw it, I could throw it)The NFL and its referee's intimidate him :lmao:

For those few guys who can get NFL-level money -- not what young coaches are paid but what the big boys get (4-5 mill a year) -- then it would be nuts to not take the college job. Much nicer atmosphere, shorter season, etc.

It's been widely speculated down here for a while now that Saban and his family had not taken to South Florida very well at all, as he prefers much more of a small town atmosphere. I agree it's not about the money, or even the locale. He has a 7 million dollar home on the water in Ft. Lauderdale and all, but it's still not enough to keep him here.

Saban is a coward who ran out on the dolphins. He made terrible personnel decisions that cost him. Selecting culpepper over brees was the start of his undoing. The dolphin fans have been killing him over that all season. If you could guarantee nick saban that daunte culpepper would be 100 percent for next season he stays. Alabama saved him from being exposed as a horrible nfl coach.

It took Saban this long to figure that out? He has been around the NFL for a long time as an assistant. He knew what it would take before he took the Miami job. The guy just likes hopping around and having his ego stroked. Just like Larry Brown in the NBA.

How isn't making the same $$ but working less and being in a better environment not a positive thing for a family?

You are right abersonc. It IS a positive thing for his family. But if you don't like Saban, or if you are upset that he has been saying he wouldn't consider it, only to take it, then you aren't willing to consider that "angle" in this situation.

And did you hear Wayne Hizinga throw out the "I'm open for any idea's" and let the press know who to contact with any feedbak...LOL

How about, if you are asking the press for ideas on how to move forward...SELL THE TEAM NOW!!!!!!!!

I wish Jerry would do that, i'm convinced the press know more about football than he does.

One can consider the family angle, but it rings a little hollow since he left a good college job to go to the NFL in the first place. He was set at LSU. They probably would have given him a little more money to stay, but he didn't give them that chance. He just left for Miami and at the time knew the rigors of being an NFL coach.

I would agree with you Joseephus, except if you have ever made a career change, thinking you understood what you were doing, thinking you had counted the cost, only to ask yourself a few months in "what in the world was I thinking?", then I think you can understand how this would happen.

All good coaches/players are competitors. They have a drive for new challenges. That is what took Saban to Miami, for the most part.

I'm not saying that the family angle is the ONLY thing that figured into his going to Alabama. I'm sure it isn't. But I wouldn't rule it out as a major contributing factor.

Let me say this, though. I'm actually disappointed that Saban went to Alabama. I think he should have stayed and finished what he agreed to with Miami. That is one thing that I think has absolutely been lost in professional sports, both on the side of ownership and on the side of players/coaches, the idea that a "contract is a contract". There is simply no concept of that anymore.

A few weeks ago Alabama was after Rich Rodriguez from WVU, and now they land Nick Saban.

How cool that is for us in WV since they grew up probably 10-12 miles from each other in a little podunk area of WV near here.

I watched them both play HS football years ago.

Saban was QB of an awesome single 'A' team back in the mid-late 60's. Our HS was triple 'A' and conference champs in 1968 football season.

Sabans team came into our town and beat us 40-0.
