The Saban move wasn't about money

Have you ever left one job for another? I mean willingly, as we all know you've likely been asked by several employers not to return.

Insults? How did this become about me? 99% of the people in this thread are rightfully savaging Saban, yet I'm the problem? Drop dead.

Honestly, the dude just got himself set for 8 years -- rather than only 3 more years with the Dolphins. He gets to go back to an environment that fits better for him and his family.

He was "set" at LSU. He was "set" at Miami. He already has millions in the bank. Ever heard of honor? Ever heard of "keeping your word"? Why are you shilling for a backstabbing liar?

Judging from the political views you've expressed over and over on this board, I would have thunk that you'd have a bit more respect for the family angle.

What the hell are you talking about? I don't think I've uttered anything political in over a year, mainly because it's forbidden. And the fact that you've committed past statements to memory is positively frightening. Do you not have a life?

But I guess it is convenient for you to toss off that aside just like you want to define who gets to be a "family."

I'm sorry you're so gullible. This jerk doesn't give a rat's arse about his family. The Bama job ain't a 9-5 job. He won't be tucking the little ones into bed; he'll be at the office reviewing film and game-planning. This is a money junket, pure and simple. And what about his "football family"? Do they not count? What about broken promises?

Next time, think twice before picking unprovoked fights with other posters.

The dude is a documented liar. He got angry at the press asking questions about Alabama like he was personally insulted. All of which shows no spine or character. If the guy has no soul, do you think he honestly gives a crap about his family? He cares about one thing- money. He's a slave to the almighty buck nothing more.

Indeed. The day before he left for Miami, he personally assured his LSU squad that he would be staying. What a guy.

So you know Saban? You know his feelings about his family?

Bama plays far fewer games than the Fins -- ya think that has something to do with the workload?

Any time you leave a job you have to break some "promises" - do you put your work "family" above your home family? Of course, you won't agree with me because you've got some sort of Saban bug up your booty.

Simply put -- people who can get better jobs do so. Those who can't hate those who do.

Again, coming on the heels of the Jim Mora situation, he knew the press was putting him in a no win situation. Damned if he says he's interested (like Mora) and damned if he says he isn't. I can understand the insult.

Sure, he's "lied" in the past -- if you want to call it that -- but keep in mind that situations change -- I was in a similar situations where I turned down a position and told my employer I'd be back the next year but a few days later I got a far far sweeter offer. The situation changed and my decisions did as well.

I know him as well as you do. I also know his track record and history of lying to fans' and players' faces. I suppose you think JJ "voluntarily resigned" in 1994. Have fun being oblivious.

Workaholics don't give two craps about the wife and kids. Stop peddling his cover story. When people say it's not about the money, it's about the money. And when they say they wanna spend more time with the brats, they most assuredly don't. He's rich; he can afford to retire and spend 100% of his time with the family. Instead, he went on another money dash. Surprise surprise.

Funny how his broken promises always lead to a lot more money. Coincidence? Um, no.

Simply put -- people who can get better jobs do so. Those who can't hate those who do.

I see. Saban's pure as the driven snow, but I'm just jealous. Do you keep his photo under your pillow? Are you a Bama grad? The mystery widens.

Again, as I pointed out -- situations change, offers change. Saban just got a job that will pay him up for the next 8 years -- right up until he's going to retire. Hmm, 3 years left with the Dolphins, 8 years with the Tide. Again, see the Mora incident -- if he said he had an interest in the Tide, he'd have been crucified. Either way he was going to get a ton of bad press.

Lots of folks consider making enough money to provide for their kids needs long after they are gone to be very important as well. There are many way to do things for your family. Plus a better environment for the family is pretty high on people's list as well. If he's a workaholic then retirement ain't going to be on his radar - even if he did retire, he'd still find a ton of ways to keep busy. Sounds to me like he's doing exactly what workaholics do to make a better life for the wife and kids.

Funny how the best time to get a job is when you have the leverage of currently having one.

Not at all - I'm just sick of hearing all this one sided crap. Don't be a simpleton, consider something other than the junk you hear echoed on sports radio.

it was about Saban being a soft coach who at the first sign of trouble decided to bolt because he couldnt win with the big boys. If he would have had a winning record and made the playoffs he would have said he loved Miami but he couldnt win so instead of continuing to try he instead quit... Ah POOR BABY!!!!!

So if your job was going poorly and you had a chance to have a better one, what would you do? Take 8 years -- a deal that gets you to the end of your career -- a deal that possibly won't be there again (with anyone) if you continue you path at your present job OR stick it out at your present job where MAYBE you can turn it around.

It doesn't seem like such a weird choice to me.

i didnt say it was a weird choice but if you make a commitment then you stick to it till you furfill it or until your contract is up. or try another year to do your job and if you completely feel you after more than just 2 years then i guess quit but what do i know. jeez at the very least dont lie about it and say to your players and fans that you are gonna stay with them and then a couple of weeks later just completely do a 360. how do you think the players and fans felt about what he did??? probably betrayed and rightfully so

All he had to say was no comment. That's it. Leave it at that. Not I'm not going to be coaching Alabama. I get offered jobs with more money every single day and I don't think twice about them. He's a slave to money. I can't understand why you are defending him. As far as him being a family man. Was it about his family when he moved from Michigan to Louisiana to Florida and now to Alabama? No it was about cash. Would you send your kid to play for him? Do you think your kid is going to believe him if he tells you he is going to be there until he graduates? I don't see how you can give him any crediblity. If I was the kid I'd rather play for Auburn or anyone else that is more likely to be a man of his word.

Obviously his contract had an out clause. So he doesn't have to stick it out.

I think there were only two real issues:

1. He can't win in Miami anytime soon, and he knows it...that's one tough division, and he's playing serious catchup, not to mention Buffalo's improvement...it's a tough situation that a coach could drown in.

2. Like most married men, I think his wife played a large part in this. She's raising two young kids...raise them in what many see as an ideal situation in a college town or raise them in South Beach?

It is still no-win -- the "no comment" would still make a huge splash -- in fact, everyone would simply assume that he was going to Alabama in that case. "Wow, no comment! What is he hiding? Why didn't he just say he wasn't going?"

Same deal. No win.

See folks -- it isn't that crazy. Any of you who have lived in a college town know it is pretty ideal.

Thanks for adding a voice of reason Wayne.

So it is better to lie about it?
If you are the Father to a 5 star recruit what exactly can you expect him to teach your kid.
1) If you are faced with a difficult situation- just leave
2) Never tell the truth when directly asked a question just go back on your word.
3) Family? Ah they will be ok wherever. Its always about you so do what you have to to make yourself happy.
Coaches in the SEC are going to have a field day with what they can say against him.
