A few weeks ago Alabama was after Rich Rodriguez from WVU, and now they land Nick Saban.

How cool that is for us in WV since they grew up probably 10-12 miles from each other in a little podunk area of WV near here.

I watched them both play HS football years ago.

Saban was QB of an awesome single 'A' team back in the mid-late 60's. Our HS was triple 'A' and conference champs in 1968 football season.

Sabans team came into our town and beat us 40-0.

Wow, WV, that is a great story. That is really cool. I haven't heard from any news source that these two guys were both from WV like that. That is some neat stuff.

You are right abersonc. It IS a positive thing for his family. But if you don't like Saban, or if you are upset that he has been saying he wouldn't consider it, only to take it, then you aren't willing to consider that "angle" in this situation.

The whole "saying he wouldn't consider it" thing strikes me as silly. That's on the heals of Jim Mora creating a huge controversy for indicating interest in another position. So he's damned if he does indicate interest and damned if he says he's interested and probably damned if he says "no comment" as well.

Not that this has anything to do with Saban, but figured you might find it interesting.

Rich Rod ,WVU coach, earned his start as a HC at the young age of 24 for Salem College...a very small school that a japanese firm bought later and shutdown the football program. Still amazing to think of a HC at age 24 even if it is at a small school.

After that he went to be the HC at Glenville state, another small WV school.
While coaching there they played, and lost against, Youngstown state (out of ohio)...the coach of that Youngstown state school was Tressel who went one to be the current Ohio State coach.

Of course Rich Rod went on to be the OC for both Tulane and Clemson with his now famous spread offense before finally getting the HC job at WVU. He played football at WVU as a walk on, so it was kind of a dream job. I think the other dream job he has is rumored to be FSU if Bowden would retire. Which is another odd thing as Bobby Bowden, for a short period of time was actually the coach of WVU.

I guess this all ties in as Bama seemed to think they had Rich as their next HC just a few weeks ago.

Just trivial things but I find it interesting.

I may have misled a little there, Saban is probably 20 yrs older than Rodriguez.

Not like they grew up together or anything.

As a matter of fact, Saban's HS was one of 3 or 4 that was consolidated to form Rodriguez's HS.

BP, he ran that spread offense while HC at Glenville too. They scored in the 40's most of the time and went really far in the NAIA playoffs. They may have played and lost the championship, I forget.

Yes he started it there, had to do something to try and level the playing field.

Did you hear that comment during the Gator Bowl about how that one option play was actually installed because a QB messed up the play but the play worked so they started using it.

Good stuff.

A guy here where I work played at WV State and remembers playing against Glenville when Rod was the coach, said they were well coached and a very good team.

His spread offense was actually a passing offense at Glenville. But he found that by spreading out the defense he could run effectively as well.

I love the fact that we run the ball predominately.

BP, I just thought of something else, ... our governor hails from inside that same 10 mile radius as Saban & Rich Rod.

Must be something in those coal mines over there.:laugh2:

My father was born and raised in West Virginia, (Wellsburgh) was a huge Jerry West fan, and if he were still living would have loved that Bowl game :)

What exact area was it? Was it around cabin creek...if so that is also where my wifes parents and grandparents where from...also where Jerry West was from.

No, not Cabin Creek, but Jason Williams and Randy Moss are both from near there. I saw them play together in a HS basketball game at the WV state tournament.

I am talking about Monongah HS (Saban) and North Marion HS (Rodriguez) in Marion Co. outside of Fairmont.

Monongah, Mannington, Fairview, Rivesville, Barrackville & Farmington were the HS's that were consolidated to make North Marion HS, which is located between Mannington and Monongah.

Moss was/is an incredible athlete.

He won the state 100 & 200 meter dashes as a soph. in HS and never ran track again.

There was a story about him walking over to track practice after a spring football practice at Marshall, and while in his tennis shoes, unofficially broke 3 Marshall school sprint records.

Mr. Basketball, sprint champion, but turned out to be an elite NFL WR.

Spare me the family angle. He's a carpetbagging money *****.

I agree. Family? Family give me a break. He stood there and lied multiple times. So why would a guy obviously with no character and a documented liar give a crap about his family. The minute Saban or the Dolphins owner states that "It's not about the money", guess what it's about the money. "It's not about the money" is one of the most transparent and overused lines in sports. It is always about the money.

Like Lebatard said on PTI... if he was 13-3 this year with Dolphins would he have left?

He failed and ran.

Have you ever left one job for another? I mean willingly, as we all know you've likely been asked by several employers not to return. Honestly, the dude just got himself set for 8 years -- rather than only 3 more years with the Dolphins. He gets to go back to an environment that fits better for him and his family.

Judging from the political views you've expressed over and over on this board, I would have thunk that you'd have a bit more respect for the family angle. But I guess it is convenient for you to toss off that aside just like you want to define who gets to be a "family."
