Actually, the majority population is not Cajun and is concentrated in southern and southwestern Louisiana. New Orleans itself is less than 5% Cajun and is more likely considered Creole, though still not a majority.

South Louisiana, and Cajuns in particular, is predominantly Catholic, which is where the parish term comes from. Louisiana north of Alexandria is predominantly not Catholic. The swamps/marshes are pretty much confined to the Gulf coast and Atchafalya/Missississippi river basins.

Cajun culture, while strongest in the Acadiana parishes, is embraced by pretty much every native of the state.

The state's population is over 4.3 million.

Combining French and French Canadian descendants, you are misidentifying 83% of the state's population makeup as Cajun.

Everyone else has counties. You can deny it all you want but the Cajun influence in Louisiana is still very strong. I don’t say that as an insult
I never denied that Cajun citizenry (sp?) doesn't influence the rest of the state. Please point out where I did.

You made an analogy about your family members who are Cajun and associated your personal experience with the entire state. That is an incorrect application. It is an association which is stated way too often by way too many non-Louisianians.

Southern part is a lot of swamp land, I don't know why you are being defensive about it.
Again, did I say that?

You, yourself, is saying "it". The southern part is composed of swamp land. Is this how you view the state of Louisiana?

http://i356.***BLOCKED***/albums/oo4/DallasEast1701/LouisianaSwampLine.png

The vast majority of swamp and/or marsh lands exists in the coastal areas of Louisiana (i.e. below the red line). These areas, along with New Orleans itself, is most often depicted in television, movies, etc. Of course, in reality, most of the state is not composed of wetlands. Even though the southern part of the state is home to most of the wetlands, a good portion of even the southern half of the state isn't one big swamp. However, it's a widely held misconception which will not die.

Good.

I am 44 years old.

I have spent all of my life in this state.

I have either visited or driven through all 64 parishes, in some cases many times.

In your opinion, which of the two of us do you believes knows the state of Louisiana best?

I'm not misidentifying anything where did I say all people who live in Louisianan is Cajun? I didn't it has a big influence in that state and by the census you gave they are the largest individual group making up 17%.

Sorry you feel the need to be defensive about it. As for the drinking comment Louisiana drinking age was 18 longer than any other state out there and many are still fighting it today and in may areas not very strick in enforcing the drinking age.

They do have many drive thrus where you can by alcoholic drinks something that the vast majority of states do not allow hell most states have open container laws Louisiana only 1 of 7 that do allow it. There was nothing in my statement of Louisiana that was meant as a slam on the state.

Leave my city alone  .

I'm listening to WWL 870 in New Orleans and they are bragging about a new survey that claims Louisiana, along with a few other states have the most "happy" residents.

they forget to note that the poll was made before Katrina

what's funny is that they said that for every, other state in the top 10 or whatever, "happy" was an accurate description EXCEPT for Louisiana lol

I had a long-winded reply, so I erased it. Instead, I'm going to re-visit the prequel of this conversation, which began as follows:

You applied "they" to "Louisiana".

Does the state of Louisiana exclusively have "drive through bars"? Of course not.

Does the drinking which has been observed within Cajun culture alone constitutes some form of barometer to illustrate why Louisiana residents (which are 83% non-Cajun) must drink to be happy? Of course not.

There are plenty of things to bag on Louisiana for, from good old boy politics to childhood education to mineral and gas nonuse and exploitation to etc., etc., but bagging on the state for having drive thru bars, which somehow automatically makes Louisiana residents "happy" by using them, isn't one of them.

There used to be a great place in New Llano ( I think that was where it was) called Frozen Spirits that had a bunch of drinks you could order that were basically slurpees/slushies with alcohol in them.

Living in Leesville and yes Frozen Spirits is still serving their drinks!

Just like I don't care when people say we ride horses to work. Or we are all hicks. Or get made fund of for saying ya'll. It isn't that big of a deal, and I find it funny.
