Just make sure you remember to apologize to me when you realize he isn't a "power player".

Here is a handful of plays that are really just a snapshot of a lot of other plays that I have seen where you see his get off and ability to run by a Tackle, or a T,G and RB like he did in one of these plays.

Have to forward to about halfway on this video:

He's still trying.

You know who Sam Williams reminds me of?

Bruce Smith.....

He's not quite as refined as Smith was, but he has similar capabilities.

Somewhat of a trick question, but should be simple to answer.

What position (in specific terms) did Bruce Smith play?

Hint: It's not the same position that JPP played with the Giants.

Joseph is a shut down corner. I'm really pulling for him. If he's able to play, I think he breaks out this year like Diggs. Maybe won't have the INTs. But he'll be feared in his own way.
Kelvin Joseph had an amazing 1st NFL start but somehow the vast majority of fans didn't notice.

He gave up a total of -2 yards receiving in that game.

Fixate on this instead of the "Williams is more of a power rusher". Literally no one who has watched Williams thinks that.

Typical. If you don't understand football and player comps, don't comment.

  • Actually, calling a player a power pass rusher is not a derogatory description (depending on the context of the comment).
  • There are 2 basic types of pass rushers and then a few that could play either style.
    • Speed Rusher
    • Power Rusher (I like to call it Leverage Rusher or Technique Rusher)
  • Examples
    • Speed Rusher:
      • Von Miller.
    • Power (Leverage) Rusher:
      • Jason Pierre-Paul
      • DLaw
    • Both
      • DWare
      • Lawrence Taylor
  • Players
    • JPP
      • That does not mean that JPP is some plodding, unathletic player.
      • It just means that JPP is power/leverage/technique is the core aspect of his style.
    • Von Miller
      • It also does not mean that Von Miller can't do anything but speed rush.
      • If it only required speed to be a great pass rusher, then Bruce Irvin would have been an all-time great.
    • DWare
      • He was about as close as it gets to the perfect physical prototype for a pass rusher.
      • Uber-elite 1st step quickness, speed, power, bend, loose hips, ankle flexion, etc..
      • Technique: Von Miller said he learned more from DWare than from any coach and Miller was already an All-Pro when DWare arrived in Denver.
    • DLaw is a great example of the power/leverage/technique pass rushing style.
      • With his 4.8 speed, he is not going to win tying to be a speed rusher.
      • He has developed really good technique and great timing between his hands and feet.
      • He has also spent a lot of time in the weight room and bulked up to about 270 pounds.
      • When he wins on an outside pass rush, it is generally almost a straight line path to the QB.
      • In contrast, Von Miller most often takes a deeper, wider arc to the QB.
      • This style offsets DLaw's lack of elite speed because he takes 2 or 3 less steps to get to the QB than Von Miller.
      • He would rarely win taking those extra steps because he just doesn't have that type of speed/quickness.
    • Sam Williams style in college was more power/leverage/technique than speed rusher.
      • Just because he has 4.46 forty speed does not mean that he was dependent on it.
      • What if DLaw had 4.46 speed instead of 4.8 speed?

See, i agree with almost everything you say here. However, he did not couch his comment that he was anything other than "more of a power rusher".

I just think with Sam you have to look at the defense he was in last year and realize he was not asked to turn the corner very often at all. When he was, it looked great. Go back to his previous two years of playing and you see him in an OLB pass rusher role and you see DWare. At least I do.

The Cowboys will use him in this way and he will be excellent at it IMO. He is always so far ahead of the rest of the defenders on his defense that I say he has very good to GREAT take-off. He has great speed, can bend and his power is Dware like. That is another reason I compare him to him. He has BOTH.

I like the pick.

For now I'm going with a 4.46 forty version of DLaw as the comp. DLaw would would be a top 3 pass rusher if he had that type of speed.

Yeah, no. Ware was a super athletic rusher with elite get off and bend. Williams is more of a power rusher.

I think you're both right.

SW has all traits of a smallish pass rusher.

He needs to play as physical as his measurables while improving upon his unique speed/explosion traits.

Bruce played 3-4 DE with Bills.

SW also played 3-4 DE in college.

He was played put of position but still racked up 12 sacks.

He obviously does play with power.

If he can hold position vs double team as 5 tech then he will plenty strong enough to do same as 4-3 DE vs just an OT or TE.

He absolutely has power and that will never be an issue for him but he isn't "a power player" as was inferred earlier in the thread.
