The Speed at wide receiver is the best I've ever seen at camp

After the lost to the LAR...I thought DAL offense needed some juice at RB2 and backup WR. McClay has gone out and added plenty.

Only issue is the new speed guys are getting outplayed at WR. I have the WRs like this:

1) 19
2) 13
3) 18
4) 10
5) 85
6) 16

Leaving the offseason speed additions off the 53. I do find it hard to believe Sanjay will not carry (redshirt) one of his guys. Still 3 games left so maybe 15, 83, 11 or 81 can move up to WR5-6. They just need Mike White to be on :flagwave:

Devin Smith will make them think about keeping 7 WR's.

Smith may prove to be a big get. More than injury went wrong at the Jets for him, but maybe it was a fit issue that can be turned around here.

He could be Colombo 2.

The likelihood of Smith being a real player is so much more than the UDFAs who run fast. We shouldn't *expect* any of the bottom roster guys to pan out, but Smith is the best prospect to put our money on.

Has Brown shown *anything* as receiver, instead of a tiny blocking TE?

Dump Brown, keep Smith, put the speedy UDFAs on the PS.

By all indications, Brown *is* a tiny blocking TE posing no threat as a receiver or runner.

Teams should be matching up a LB against him until he proves he can be a threat.

Keeping Brown is betting on other teams continuing to be stupid. Could happen, but this is not complicated. Defenses should be embarrassed for not figuring this out last year.

Coaches go with the default moves until they see proof of better options.

The logistics of plays calls and personnel match-ups during games is complicated.

Defensive Play Call Process when Offense changes personnel:
  • Offensive personnel go on the field.
  • DC makes a play call.
  • Assistants get defensive personnel onto the field to match the play call.
  • DC can change the play call but the personnel is already locked in.
Now to expand that down to not just seeing 3 WRs, 1 TE and 1 RB, the DC and assistants must then recognize that #85 is Noah Brown and must remember or have notes that he blocks like a TE but is limited as a receiver.

Most coaching staffs don't function with that level of efficiency.

Even if some defenses go with 3 LBs it does not really matter because Brown can block as well as many receiving type TEs anyway (better than Jarwin).

Up to this point defenses have played Nickel against Brown.

It really just comes down to a roster spot question with Brown.

The Cowboys had CB / Special Teams player CJ Goodwin on the roster for part of last season. He has been with NFL teams since 2014 and has a total of 188 snaps on defense. He was on the team and active for games because he is a special teams specialist.

Noah Brown plays a high percentage of the ST snaps also...

Recent Years prior to 2019:
Tavon Austin
Brice Butler

Butler was a wasted opportunity. Size, Speed, Strength and good concentration catching deep balls and going to the ground. Collingsworth noticed and predicted a breakout. Per target numbers were good, but we didn't use him, even when he was the clear solution to the no help press man coverage defenses were using against Terrance and Dez in 2017.

Austin is a different kind of player, but similarly productive per target/touch and similarly just not given opportunities. I think he can still do a lot for us, but he may get pushed off the roster by Pollard so that we never see it.

Careers are so much of a crap shoot. Particularly if you flop on your first team and start getting sent around the league.

Tony and injuries landed Laurent Robinson 20mil? He could have always been a bottom roster journeyman. Could have been Brice Butler.

Fun fact: Anthony Brown came from Oakland with Butler when we traded for him.

I don't know...Stephen is singing his (Brown) praises (with a coaches co-sign) as WR5 behind Tavon.

Sure they'll be able to keep 1 or 2 of these PS. I like Smith and it's just good that he's even in the discussion.

There is a connection but Brown was never in Oakland.

Best OL, best corners, best LBs, and now best WRs...the 1972 Dolphins should be very afraid. ;)

I actually think we can go undefeated

I also think we’d still wouldn’t pass the divisional round as well

Amari Cooper was 4.42 out of Bama, Gallup was 4.45 at his pro day, Cobb was 4.46 out of Kentucky, Noah Brown ran 4.55 at his pro day, Devin Smith ran 4.43 out of OSU, Tavon Austin ran 4.34, Cedrick Wilson ran 4.55, Reggie Davis ran 4.31 at Georgia, Jalen Guyton ran 4.35 at Pro Day, and Jonvea Johnson ran 4.45.

What I like is that Cooper is 210 pounds, Gallup 200, Cobb 5-10-200, Noah Brown 6-2-225, D. Smith is 200, Wilson is 195. Only Austin and Davis are light weights. Guyton (212) and Cooper are your E=mc2 guys.

This is a very fast, quick, and agile group.

I think the Cowboys will keep 7-8 WRs.

Defenses could just categorize Brown as a TE and use their normal workflow. Not that complicated. It's at least more accurate than treating him like a WR.

And it does matter. With Brown on the field, we've got a no threat blocker on the field. With Jarwin, we've got threat. If Brown blocks as well as Jarwin, we're worse with Brown on the field than Jarwin against 3LB defenses.

Without stupidity on the part of defenses, Brown on the field is a loser for us.

Yeah, you're right. I noted it because it was a surprise.

I think I know what I got wrong. They say Butler was traded with a sixth round selection instead of a sixth round pick.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brice_Butler
On September 15, 2015, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys along with a sixth round selection (#189-Anthony Brown), in exchange for a fifth round pick (#143-DeAndré Washington).

I updated the page to:
On September 15, 2015, he was traded to the Dallas Cowboys along with a sixth round pick (#189- used for Anthony Brown), in exchange for a fifth round pick (#143- used for DeAndré Washington).

I'd pretty much agree with you ,about the #85 , though, while watching some YouTube game hi-lites recently I saw where he'd caught a pass for a 1st down, I think it was in #89's 3 t.d. game I saw it happen.

Johnson, Guyton, Davis, and Smith aren't makiing the team.

And Austin's spot is tenuous.

The receivers will likely be Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Wilson, Brown, and maybe Austin.

JVJ let the nerves get to him the other day. Hopefully he has a better showing next game.

But it seems enough to condemn him?
Never did that, just haven’t seen enough to separate him from the rest of the group as a receiver. It probably doesn’t matter because chances are he’s the PR.

But he literally had one reception last year that was awesome, the others were pedestrian - hence the sample size statement

We have a ton of speed at camp this year. I recall the teams of the 90s and they never had this much potential speed and they can catch. When we traded for Galloway it was like WOW but he was really all we had that season. The Tony Romo teams had T.O. and Glenn. Dez and Twill weren't fast. Miles Austin had nice speed.

The guys we have at camp have lots of potential. Guys like; JonVea Johnson, Jalen Guyton, Reggie Davis, Devin Smith and our own Tavon Austin. We have a ton of speed. Dak has alot to use. Even the tight ends like Jarwin and McElroy have some speed for their position. When teams put 8 in the box. Look out for Dak and this group of pass catchers. We have potential for huge gains. I like JonVea Johnson he just looks like he belongs here. Smith and Reggie Davis really have caught my eye. I like Austin but Davis in my eyes has more potential in the slot than austin. Davis has a little more size at 5"11 and he even looks faster than Austin. Davis has nice size to go along with his speed. If we end up with Cooper, Gallup, Cobb, Johnson, and Davis I wouldn't be mad at all. I'd also like to place Noah Brown at Tightend. If you watch any game he has played in , he is the best blocker out of all the pass catchers we have . He looks better than Witten too. Why not put him at tightend. He is 6'2" and 235 I'm guestimating. Size wise hed be our Shannon Sharpe who was an undersized tightend who wound up being in the hall of fame. I really feel Noah Brown would be an excellent tightend. He can also jump high people forget that. I don't know what his vertical was but he can jump. He can be our sixth receiver or just try him at tightend. I'm just really impressed with all the speed we have at receiver. The organization has done a good job. What do you guys feel about the collective speed of the reciever group including Cooper, Gallup and co. and all the undrafted free agents we have?https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sou...FjAGegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw3GRnjEGcVD5HTGKDhadmUw

I was excited to see JVJ, but he couldn't hold on to the ball. I hope hes not another camp stud who falls apart when the lights come on.
