The Tight End Bermuda Triangle

Let’s face it Ferguson is in a make or break year and I’m not sure he’s a downfield yardage threat both Schoon & Spann Ford are . Sure he’s probably the best blocking TE of the three but man does live on bread alone . I see Goedert and a previous Kelce type and want downfield options for Dak when Lamb is blanketed .

I look at TE this year like the OL. More pressing needs exist at other areas like the entire defense and RB and I expect little to no draft action at this position .

I read where Tevin the Bear might be a costly FA pickup for Dallas at G . Why ? Aren’t Hoffman & Bass good enough to start the other as depth . Save that $$ and potential draft capital for defense .
I like Hoffman and bass. Don’t see guard as a need. Ferg is a good TE but he’s not the athlete some are. But he plays tough and his team mates love him. That said I don’t know about a second contract. To me you only extend elite guys and as much as I like like and especially the way he plays, he’s not elite

Ferguson can certainly move the chains and that is someone I want on this team.

A knee injury followed by a concussion really ruined Ferguson's year. Even when he was out there he didn't look like the same player.

A bounceback 2025 seems likely.

Isnt this thread really about preventing yet another bad contract? If so dont pay Ferguson and I like the player, but not that much.

Depends on the identity of this offense. So far, its run first and therefore a Witten or Novaceck TE isn't needed.

Ferguson has shown flashes of being decent. Schoonmaker has been disappointing.

Dallas may have to cobble together some kind of TE-By-Committee or hope to hit on a gem in the draft because the TE FA pool is weak

Question?
I keep hearing Dallas needs a TE that can get down the seam and catch to be a weapon.

Why doesn't Dallas just use a 6'3" WR with 4.4 speed and line him up at the TE position if they just want someone who can catch the ball.
I mean, if they can't block like a TE, then they are just a big WR anyway, so why not put the better WR in there?

Being multifaceted where they can block, and catch was the point of the TE in the day, has it changed? (of course some better blockers and some better receivers) Being big and strong enough to be able to block in line, quick enough to block in space, and fast enough with excellent hands to receive is how we used to judge TE's.

I asked last week should there be a TE discussion and there were only crickets, but the one response was Fergy is the guy.

Fergy ran a 4.81, so he's not getting downfield or running away from anybody. Schoon ran a 4.63, so your gonna be able to take some shots with him. I feel they should have a camp battle for sure.

Agree . Stop handing out jobs on a 7-10 team based on seniority . Merit give jobs that are earned .

1. Spann Ford is no downfield threat. Receiving is his biggest shortcoming, which is why he was undrafted.

2. Ferguson is the worst blocker of the three. Schoonmaker is a better blocker, and Spann Ford is the best of the three.

3. I wouldn’t be shocked if we drafted a TE on day 3, but I’m not expecting it. They will give Ferg a chance to prove his Pro Bowl year wasn’t a fluke, and make the decision to resign him or move on.

Schoons lack of playing time is the result of his lack of blocking . And Spann Ford can go downfield for a TE he needs a QB to get him the ball .

We need a TE early like a hole in the head. Our first 3 need to be WR, RB then most likely CB but I can see DT being the 3rd rounder

I wouldn’t even consider TE until 6th round or later in fact I’d prioritize back up QB over TE maybe even LB

The ones we got will suffice

Holy smoke people, TE isn't even remotely an issue. Ferguson did very well in 2023 and looked poised to keep getting better. And it's nuts to suggest he can't get downfield. He's not a superstar, but he is in the mix among the best after guys like Kelce, Kittle & a few others.

Then when Ferguson went down last year Schoonmaker stepped up and proved he could play, which we really hadn't seen before.

The result is the Cowboys look like they might have one of the better 1-2 punches at the TE in the NFL.

As for Spann-Ford, some here need to tap the breaks. The guy has 9 NFL receptions and some posters are acting as if he has proven something.

4 and 5 yards at a shot .
I know you don't like him but at least be honest about the dude.

Your claims about Schoon and Spann are fantasy. Neither one of them has shown what Ferguson did in 2023
Now maybe Ferg is done or 2023 was a fluke
we find out this season
Warren is NOT going to drop to us; another fantasy

4 and 5 yards at a shot .
Yet he averaged 10.7 yards a carry in a fully healthy season in 2023. Higher average that year than Kelce, LaPorte, Hockinson ...

That's a prettty odd feat for a guy who can only get 4-5 yards a shot. Your math doesn't seem to work.

Did you watch 2024 ? I’m sorry your TE didn’t have a good year . If you’re going for a second contract you have to pile good years together otherwise you dip back into the draft for a replacement . Might be the thinking behind using a 2nd on Schoon . Schultz was allowed to let ride into the Houston landscape Ferguson may be next .
